Lunarcore is too good a word to give up, and I think it's useful to have words to describe a vibe even if there isn't really a dedicated scene for it. For example, this video just taught me that what I've started chasing during my techwear journey is called lunarcore, and having a term for it is kind of a good confidence boost and helps me find it more readily.

Yo, this hits home! I call it "Frost Core". The name comes from the effect of frosted glass effect, which gives me this kind of feeling, when all the contrast is blurred, and it used a lot of times in semi transparent plastic. The aesthetic i was always into growing up was something between Metal Gear Solid, & Ghost In the Shell and Clean core, y2k. But I have to mention one of the main futurists and with huge influence - legendary illustrator Möebius. He was the mastermind behind the looks of the crew and spaceship of the original Alien and was a big influence on Kubrick. Also the off white and greyscale colours of plastic are associated with futrism and postmodernist designs of 70s and 80s, where plastic was the tool to make designers visions of growing cutting edge technologic era (now we have similar boom with default colours of 3d print) But I would call it this is more of frostcore, it sounds more edgy to me, as I see most of the designs are more aggressive than particularly Lunar aesthetic of the 60s. Everyone with their own tags, that's why it doesn't get much views haha .Thanks for the video! Subbed

Lunarcore looks, and to a lesser extent cyberpunk, were what drew me to techwear in the first place. I do hope people in the techwear sphere continue to experiment with these even more niche aesthetics instead of just wearing the usual uniform. I like the term lunarcore and it can be a useful tool for finding inspiration but I prefer the creativity we see when these sort of looks are put together by people outside of a small group.

Lunar core is def a cool sounding term. The genre is almost bridging the gap between clothing your regularly wear and costumes you only see on high budget productions. It would be interesting to see thinner translucent materials being incorporated for layering in hotter temperatures. Especially if hiking where you don't want heavy materials but require protection from the sun.

It would be nice to have a community of people who talked specifically about it I guess but regardless of what other ppl call it, I'm still gonna dress up like a nerd n wear silly space inspired stuff and things with nasa logos on them. love the video. brings me back to my days on /fa/ (not my best days, but saw some cool stuff). one aesthetic that came and went within a month or two was jewelwave (or jewelcore) and i was absolutely obsessed with it. for the longest time i would only get things in jewelwave colors (dark reds, navy, wheat, emeralds and burnt orange tones) long after it died. there's no new discussions on the subject these days, but i would love to see a video that goes back and revisits some of the trends that died unceremonious deaths, prior to our current conception of fast fashion and microtrends.

@@ThisIsAntwon yeah i did a bit of googling and the best i can find anymore is an inspo thread on reddit from 2015 and a few archived /fa/ threads. if you can find anything more substantial i'd be shocked. i guess one of the main reasons it bit the dust quickly is because it lacked real cohesion in terms of texture, material, silhouette, pattern. the only unifying aesthetic was the color. some people just adopted the color palette into retro/ normcore fits, others went all out with corduroy and other velour/plush materials with some kind of sheen to really play into the "jewel" part of the name. anyway, love the new direction the videos are taking. keep up the quality content!

Great video, Antwon, content as well as all those editing touches. 😘👌 Lunacore as a term is so wonderfully snappy, but at the same time I'm afraid people might be a little over the whole "core" addendum - maybe that's why it never took of completely. I also think it's exactly what you said: there's so much influence from Sci-Fi, retrofuturism and space age in fashion that this aesthetic is kind of everywhere, just as fashion is full of references to military clothing. Lunarcore is pretty close to what I consider my personal style in the widest sense, though, even though I lean more towards grey and black tones, and for myself I simply referred to it as "retrofuturistic minimalism", even if it might be already crossing the border into grey man techwear territory. The fact that the style cues from this direction work in so many different ways for so many different people with different aesthetics keeps the idea wonderfully open and allows for much more custom styling than the cursed AliExpress techwear which kind of dictates looking like a cyberpunk ninja. Maybe, and I'm just spitballing here without any sources, Lunarcore in the widest sense is already normal to most of us, because we're living in a version of the future the past imagined, albeit it a combination of a multitude of ideas from back then, and maybe that's why we don't necessarily need a label for it. We rely on satellites for everyday applications like navigation and even just running apps that track speed and distance, handheld smart devices are an entirely ordinary part of our collective experience, and commercial space travel is just around the corner. It'd only be logical if the various versions of everyday fashion reflected that. Btw, I think a brand that always heavily leans towards this aesthetic and its inspirations is Yixi Chen's C2H4, which even had a collection called "Zero Gravity" in S/S 2018 (not a single legit space suit anywhere, though). It was perfect for anyone like me trying to look like a co-pilot in a mid Sci-Fi show that was cancelled after one season. From what little discourse there is about this brand online, some people seem to disregard it as an amalgamation of Cav Empt and parts of Undercover - wrongly, imo. For me Yixi Chen imagines how clothing could look like in a rather close future that doesn't even question anymore how far it developed. Kind of where we are today.

I dont know if its still happening, but at Star Wars Galaxies at Disneyworld, a lot of people would wear outfits that are Star Wars-ish without cosplaying a specific famous character, sort of just inventing a space pilot or droid programmer character and inhabiting the world that way. and the official disney cast members would treat you differently and play along with you. its sort of LARPy but also fun. I want to do it some day and am always looking for specific pieces that look like they could fit in the star wars universe but aren't specifically branded that way. basic military jackets, boots, utility belts, etc. and lunar core is definitely part of that vibe

and for those who say this has an element of cosplay or fantasy to it - yes. but here's the secret - its all cosplay and fantasy on some level. every outfit plays a character. an urban lumberjack or a guy in carhartts that has never driven a forklift in his life. a guy in a savile row suit is trying to project an image of being old english nobility. or being more like a footballer or basketball star by wearing the sneakers or jersey. or cosplaying as a rapper in certain streetwear. most people wearing skate clothes never touch a skateboard. the fantasy of a given outfit is a big part of it. even techwear you are cosplaying a cyberpunk ninja hacker. better to embrace it and work with it rather than deny it

You have no idea how much I'd love seeing people walk around in looks like this. I wanna see inspiration from everywhere, and for it to be so common that even insecure people wouldn't feel weird walking around like that. It's indeed a shame, though, even with the means, it's too much effort for most to go for such a particular style, probably even goes for the majority of those who are interested. It'd take quite the revolution for niches to be attainable enough for them not to get stuck in a negative feedback loop.

As a casual Lunacore observer I was really confused when you mentioned it’s not a well known term. But then I went and searched the # on Insta and there’s barely any posts! 😂 I thought this was a well known term RIP. Hope the word catches soon because I love the aesthetic.

I think lunar core would be more accessible if it leaned into it's workwear roots and I also think it can take inspiration from the cold war era and the 1960s jfk moon mission type asthetic. For example basically the outfit jfk wore while watching the space shuttle leave for the moon. It could also take more inspiration from the y2k asthetic.

Really interesting video, I think maybe a lot of people who were initially inspired by lunarcore posts might have shifted to create their own niche styles? I know for me those posts were great inspiration for what I wear now, basically star wars extracore... Or if you've seen the movie "Prospect"... Or maybe like if you made an Ewok live in a wealthy apartment in blade runner universe. Love the videos.

Thanks! I think there's some truth in that, for many people the inspiration was exactly that rather than a rulebook to be copied

I'm kind of accidentally lunar core, but think "camo into the dark of space" kind of branch. I use a lot of oil slick, black on black, heavy retro futurism, black reflective materials, and spots of bright reds and oranges. It's been compared to trying to dress like a black hole by friends. Lol

Out of all things too be inspired by, SPACE is such a vibe. Lunar core would make the most sense if we as humans actually went the route of space exploration and such things that we thought was going to happen in the early 2000s but wars and other things got in the way of that... lunar to me is not so anime fiction or avatar alien, but human elements + tech and function. Maybe one day nasa hit us with the runway show wit all type of advance tech garments LOL

I feel like Lunacore can be made modern KojiPro's Homoluden and Death Stranding costume design breaths like a utilitarian space wear that can be replicated.
