Surround a mall mall with low income housing and here's what happens. The mall opened in 1972 on U.S. Route 40 along the "Golden Mile".[1] The third tenant was Gentleman's Choice. The mall had anchor stores JCPenney, Eyerly's, Woolworth's and Montgomery Ward. It also had a Hoyts cinema. As time went on, the area surrounding the mall became home to more low income housing, and after a series of events that earned its reputation for crime, violent crime surrounding the area of the mall and frequent fights began to break out in the mall itself, those events became well publicized in the media and locals began relocating their dollars to a safer retail district across town, near Francis Scott Key Mall.

Not only did the Internet send these large malls into bankruptcy, but many of them were overbuilt to begin with. Experts predicted that the shopping mall would be replaced by small strip malls and it happened. of course back then the experts did not know about the internet. Here in Colorado we had the Cinderella Shopping Mall which if I remember correctly was three stories deep into the ground. They never did lease out most of it. It never got over fifty percent leased. They finally tore it down in the early 90's. Yep! The shopping mall is from a by gone era, but they sure were fun.

It's Dan's friend who went with him. You see Dan and his friend just to the right of centre screen, then as his friend moves away, his reflection is re-reflected in the mirrors in the shop's interior and so can be seen moving at left of screen.

I grew up in this mall. My pediatrician even opened a pretzel shop here! Last time I went over 10 years ago, there was a sign at the entrance advising all patrons that their pants must be worn around their WAIST, and no backpacks or weapons allowed. And no running 😆

I grew up in the Frederick County area. This mall was known as the lesser mall compared to the Francis Scott Key mall. I left the area when I went off to college in 2000. As you walked thru the mall I was surprised how little it changed while I roamed around there in the mid 90's. Every detail looks similar to what you showed in the video, even the movie theater graphics etc looked the same.

Since the internet launched a few decades ago.. people now shop online. The internet caused these old malls to become ghost towns. Used to back in the day, people did all their shopping these huge malls because they had Sears & Roebuck, Montegomery Ward and all the department stores, jewelry stores, clothing stores, shoe stores..movie theaters & etc. Nowadays most shopping can be done online, even Sears sells online. The old shopping malls are now a relic from the past.

+midos67 Does really depend though. The mall near my house is almost constantly busy. Especially closer to the holidays. Can't see it becoming a 'ghost town' for quite some time. Then again, none of the anchor stores have budged even a little. So that may have something to do with it.

Man...that old Subway wallpaper. I remember getting lost in those illustrations as a kid. They always looked kinda like something out of a science fiction novel, especially the cutaway picture of the man in the top hat sitting in the subway cart that's completely circular. The lady on the platform peering over into the tunnel never looked quite right to me.

A little history: The mall closed down mostly due to the anchors going to the new Francis Scott Key (FSK) mall they built about 5 miles away. The only thing keeping it on life support was the movie theater. Eventually Frederick approved construction of the Westview Promenade about 7 miles away which included a beautiful state of the art theater which effectively closed that mid-tier theater and any stores that were left promptly moved out. Update on Frederick Towne Mall: The building is still standing. Boscov's is still on one end and Home Depot took the other end, but neither one have mall access. A doctor is now the owner of the property, but he seems way to busy to even come up with a plan. I can't imagine he would be crazy enough to keep the building standing much longer since the neighborhood surrounding the mall is pretty low income and not in the best shape so there's little hope of any businesses wanting to move in even if it gets completely overhauled.

So when I was little I used to live there at that mall the mall was my favorite place I have some picture if anyone ever wants to see what it looked like when it was open way back in the day truth be told I miss it it’s was a lot of fun my old church is across the street from that mall but the mall used to be filled every weekend until it one day people just stopped showing up and sadly it closed down the only parts that are still open are the boscos and that’s about it you can still walk in but security is always there if you wanna sneak in the best day to sneak in is on a Sunday security is lacking make sure you go in through the back

At what moment do people give up on something forever? For example 12:23 - someone was in the middle of mopping the floor of the Frederick Towne Mall, and then stopped, forever. Were they told to stop? Or did they just decide, that's enough, goodbye, leave the mop there, and walk away?

This mall was always the secondary mall in Frederick, in the 1990s. I'm shocked to see it like this tho. Seems like Walmart, Costco and Amazon will be the only stores left in a few yrs.

I didn't know about this place until my mom and I stopped here at the Boscov's, trying to find a food court to get cold drinks. I had never been to a mall like this, so it was so weird not being able to get into the mall and seeing all the empty shops.

I think it would be a great idea when a mall or a store finally closes down entire mall they donate the usable materials to a non profit organization such as Habitat for Humanity. They operate stores that are kinda like goodwill but they resale used building materials. I think they even have crews of people who need to do community service come in and remove and load up materials. so it would be no cost to the mall management and they could use the donations as a tax write off win win for everyone.
@88evileve885 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing.. The light fixtures and displays are not cheap! They could at least take the tax deduction.

Add a few Raiders and Fiends and youre in a Fallout Mall.. Its too bad some people just have to break glass, steal stuff, wreck walls for the hell of it. Sadly those are the same people youd have to put out of their misery during a real apocalypse

something so eerie about empty malls. I guess it's because it makes you think about how it USED to be so busy and at one point in time the very floor tiles you're walking on, many people like you have walked on before too...
