This veteran was a humble hero. He was clearly hard of hearing. His lack of teeth changed his voice and perhaps hinders the audience's understanding. I'm reminded of my uncle's detailed WW2 stories. He had no teeth/false teeth. It's a shame the interviewer did not compensate for it.

“I am not an Ulsterman but yesterday, the First of July, as I followed their amazing attack, I felt that I would rather be an Ulsterman than anything else in the world. My pen cannot describe adequately the hundreds of heroic acts I witnessed, the Ulster Volunteer Force, from which the Division was made, has won a name that equals any in history. Their devotion deserves the gratitude of the British empire” Rest easy soldiers, your duty is done

If you haven’t been to the Somme and want to see what Britain and Ireland gave, as well as Germany, go. As well as some more of the Commonwealth and France. The sight of men who were killed and now all lined up side by side can bring about anger and upset.

I was there on the 75th anniversary of the Somme and at 58.39, i am in the background on the extreme left with sunnies on and a dark suit with white shirt and black tie, somewhat askew as it was very hot and humid, and with Dougie McKenizie in front of me,. We, the Met Police, had taken a veteran from the Royal Fusiliers, one Alf Razzel over. Great memories and great days by the way i was looking for my chief inspector, only to find that he had been on the rum and had collapsed over the wall we were standing on. Top bloke

I remember seeing Alf on documentaries about the great war, sad that he felt such guilt over events, but those poor guys lived with it and received very little support and just endured for decades.

In the photo of him as a soldier, there appears to be a chevron and a small bar on hus left forearm. Can anyone identify what it means? (Could it be denoting L/Corporal rank, and a "wound stripe"?)

Why did they fight for? Well, long story short, Belgium was in dire need of any support they could get, and France sure appreciated any help they could get too. Other than that? Well, UK not quite liking the German Empire growing too powerful. I guess.

Also Brits will not accept anybody other than the French to occupy the channel ports.

The interviewer is asking the most ludicrous of questions!! ☹️
@tim70526 күн бұрын
Yes, I agree. The interviewer has no rapport with the man. Should've either had a longer time with him prior to the interview,or used a more experienced interviewer.

Why did you repeat this post three times? Is it because you stutter? 🤔
