Jaymee-Ashley hi 👋 Coming from a third world country where extreme poverty is more prevalent and far worst than in this case-south Korea, i find your observation rather simplistic ✌️. To say the rich are nice or niceR because they are rich OR the poor are NOT nice or niceR is for me ‘problematic’. Though I understand that poverty can lead a person to criminal activities just to survive, many rich people do criminal activities as well for whatever reason people deem fit. I have seen first hand extremely poor people share what little they have. I have also seen ‘poor’ people do unnecessary crimes because they prefer not to work or whatever reason they dim fit. What i am saying is ultimately boils down to a person’s value system. Pitting the rich vs poor can lead to dangerous conclusion. This video said that the rich were EXPLOITING their staff but this is UNTRUE. Their helper was being paid well and treated WELL. Though Mrs Park was shallow and can be insensitive, It is not the rich’s fault for being rich. Hiring someone and paying them well is NOT exploitative. The video also said that the poor were fighting against each other. Concluding that it is the rich people’s fault because they WANT to keep the working class divided”. This is UNTRUE as well. Rich people fight against each other as well. People are just people. BLAMING the other ‘ class’ is simplistic, disingenuous and dangerous. It is the nature of reality that there will always be people on top and at the bottom. History has already shown us how trying to pit classes against each other can lead to dangerous end. Does this mean nothing can be done to help the poor to improve their lives? Of course not. It is our social duty to find ways of helping. Another conclusion of this video ( or the movie) is that it is almost impossible for the poor to improve because the problem is systemic . I agree to a degree because GOVERNMENT CORRUPTION is SYSTEMATIC in our country. But i disagree with the conclusion that it is almost impossible for the poor to improve. Much of the world came out of the ashes and started from zero after the war. Many of the middle class to the 1% richest came from nothing. South Korea is a great example of the indomitable human spirit. Sorry for the long text. As a mother of 4 whose grandparents were immigrants who came from nothing, it is worrying for me that this Victimhood is spreading in the hollywood and now Asian films. Having a social conscience is paramount for a healthy society. I would rather the message be positive rather than perpetuate a defeatist Victimhood mentality where we are confined to our circumstances. Anyway, peace and more power to you ❤️

@My Thoughts I don't see how the specific storm in the film would be a blessing for farmers. Because that amount would just destroy half of the crops and weaken the rest
@yulana9904 жыл бұрын
@My Thoughts I have no idea how you watched the storm in the movie and even mention farms, like jin jun said, that would definitely not help farmers in ANY way, as too much water would still ruin them. Also about your global warming point, I hope you are kidding as global warming is not just ice turning into grass, that's ridiculous. Multiple european countries have reached peak heat last summer, the Netherlands was also close to breaking the record from 1944 but LUCKILY did not break it. The fact that a country that is cold almost broke a heat record set in 1944 in 2019 is ridiculous. Then there's the australia fires, so no, it's not just some lands flooding and cold turning into grass. It's cold country becoming insanely hot in the summer and the weather going insane, like snow in February, and countries that are already hot either flood or turn into big fire storms like Australia. All of these options are awful, and are already happening all over Europe, Asia and Australia.

Why is no one talking about how in the beginning min said he trusted Ki-woo to tutor the parks daughter and he would officially ask her out when she went to university then Ki-woo still pursued her and mimicked his lines of officially dating her when she goes to university. Ki-woo wanted to be min that’s why he always followed the mantra of “what would min do” and why he valued the rock so much
@ZEROnoobTOLERANCE4 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I didn’t think about that (clearly no one did) made me think about Min’s introduction scene when he scared off the drunk peeing around their window. The father praised Min for being vigorous, somewhat implying to his son that he doesn’t display the same character his father desired from him. Ki-woo also uses the same word “vigor” during his first lesson with the park daughter to prove he is just as capable as Min was to the Park mother. Later on when the drunk returns Ki-woo takes the initiative to shoo him away, at first holding holding the rock.

ROBLYN Castelo • I think it’s fine to not like the movie, cuz it’s your opinion, but this movie doesn’t just reflect the life of only South Koreans too. Even if “hierarchy” isn’t forced upon people, it’s a thing that’s inevitable. You can see it. And the feelings and actions portrayed in this movie are to show that people always get some kind of annoying thought or feeling in them because of how they’re treated, and the thoughts and feelings take over them, causing them to make bad actions. No one in the movie is technically good or evil because of this. It’s just how society works, and the movie is basically revealing that this kind of problem can’t really be fixed in reality. It’s like a sad truth

Ok, so no one's talking about this.. Park's daughter (Da-hye) is disconnected from her rich family. We see very less of her with her parents, calls her little brother an imposter and so on. And it becomes evident, when her mother doesn't offer her noodles which results into a quarrel between the two. This strangely correlates to the 'smell' objection of the Park family. Da-hye is the only one who hasn't complained in the movie about 'smell'. Her father, mother and brother, all three at sometime in the movie have complained or got disgusted by the smell of poor people. On the contrary, she fell in love with Ki-woo (Kevin).

The saddest, most mindblowing aspect of the movie is towards the end, where the son writes to his dad starting with “I have a plan..” and proceeds to elaborating his plans on getting his dad out. But more than halfway through the movie they had a conversation at the evacuation center where the father gave him only one advice: “Only one plan ever works out: no plan at all.” And that hit me in the saddest way because we know the son will be working really hard and will be planning hard to get his father out but we know that his dad was right. His plan will never work out.

I think that’s strange because it’s no one’s fault that the rain flooded their home. However, The Park’s house is up higher therefore the rain would have never flooded their home. You should also mention how Park praises his workers who "don't cross the line." This can be seen as a metaphorical line between the rich and the poor.
@simonmccross165 жыл бұрын
Yeah also the line represents human dignity. When the Park family returned from camping they only gave 8 minutes of notice to the Kim Mother. 8 minutes is not enough time to cook. They could have told her 1 hour early the very least. In a sense while Kim family tried to cross the social class line, Park family kept crossing basic human dignity line. Treating them as if they were just tools to be used. That's why Mr. Kim killed Mr.Park, he crossed the line with his indifference while a person was dying right in front of him.

@@anonanon8447 About your first comment, they mentioned this line multiple times throughout the film. If it did simply mean that a servant should show respect, I don't think they would have referenced it as much as they did. Also, this takes place in modern day. There is not really a concept of "servant," the point of the entire film is to show that the rich do not view the lower classes with dignity, as PEOPLE. Not servants, but PEOPLE. As for your second comment. Mr. Park first told Mr. Kim to leave Jessica and drive them to the hospital for Mr. Park's son! And when he didn't get up, he then told him to throw him the keys. Mr. Park had no intention of saving Jessica's life. None of the rich people did. They only cared about the Park son who had fainted.

One thing i also noticed : When Park's daughter asks Kevin about Jessica and suggests that he may be her boyfriend, he immediately denies and seems kinda nervous about it, making a whole story about meeting Jessica for the first time that day. When comparing both of the girls with flowers, Park's daughter checks Kevin's pulse on his wrist, just like he did on their first class. She then remembers what he had told her about the "heart never lying" thing and leans for a kiss, mistaking his fast pulse for feelings. 8 months later but I made a small discovery: In the scene when they’re all eating their hearts out at the buffet, the daughter asks her dad where he used to work, and she’s surprised that he used to do all these odd jobs but then he replies “After the bakery went out of business I had to” flash forward later when they’re all in the basement, the man who’s been living there said his bakery foreclosed, and him and his wife ended up taking out loans with the “loan sharks”. I don’t think that was a coincidence !! I think they’re father worked at the SAME small business, once again drawing a parallel between the two families! I can’t remember the scenes exactly but if anyone has any more information feel free to tell me.

Do you perhaps know what was the symbolism of wife being the hammer thrower. I don't know why but I just don't understand that little detail - it has to have some meaning right?
@ltd83464 жыл бұрын
It is definitely another parallel drawn between the two families, and probs why the father seemed a little more sympathetic to the man in the basement.. but there's also some background to it. The Taiwan cake was a huge hit in South Korea few years back, so there were thousands of small bakery businesses featuring it. Then a TV show did a report on how these bakeries use vegetable oil in their Taiwan cake recipes and painted it as bad and unhealthy. (fyi it is not, adding vegetable oil is pretty standard in a lot of cake recipes) So not long after a majority of these Taiwan cake bakeries went out of business, ofc the owners had hard times. It's a pretty well known story in SK... so it really gave these characters more sense of reality for the audience as well.

I’ve seen so many comments saying how all of this could have been avoided if they hadn’t let the old housekeeper in, but why isn’t anyone talking about how if they’d agreed to keep the housekeeper’s husband a secret + leave him food every two days, things would have worked out fine? The Ki family became everything they deplored. Chong-Sook found herself in a position of higher wealth & status than the old housekeeper, yet didn’t live up to her promise of ‘being nicer’ should she have found herself in that position. She was insistent on reporting the old housekeeper to the police. That was her choice. Wealth is the parasite.
@Vanessa-bb2qo4 жыл бұрын
You're right. Especially when you say that she acted that way because at that time she was in a superior position. Yet she had no bad conscience snitching her, although her family led the housekeeper to that misery by sneakily stealing their job.

The wealth wasn't the issue. The intense self-loathing that had been consuming the older Kims was. The way they lorded their power over the old houskeeper and her husband, the pride they took in sticking to their new jobs - it all stemmed from the deep shame and despair they had been for years feeling as a result of ending up with nothing after their best, most productive years were behind them. They hated the reflection of themselves those two.

that also pretty much shows how moving to a rich family's big house as a housekeeper changed the mom. she almost forgot that she was also in poverty until couple weeks ago, instead she starts becoming like park family by kicking her at the basement, and even threatening her by calling the police at the very beginning. that was her ego making her do all these, we also see this change of the family in the scene where the house is all theirs and what they do is watch tv in the bath, read under the sun on the grass, eat and drink "mineral water" instead of normal. as if they been living in that house.

Another metaphor or symbolism : When the poor son said to rich daughter that - do you think he fits in, and says he would go down. She says that - down there in the lawn? He says- lower. Y'all! just realized why Da Song liked Jessica when in fact all of his previous teachers can't handle him. Dahye mentioned that Da Song was just pretending to be 'smart' 'artistic' or any at that matter and he liked Jessica for the same reason that Jessica was also pretending to be 'smart' and 'artistic'. So at some point they understand each other very well. Birds with the same feather flock together indeed.

Brilliant analysis and some comments are mindblowing! There's one thing that I've noticed : when Jessica/Ki-Jung is stabbed at the end, her death is messy. It's bloody, she says that she's hurting several times, and it takes a while before she exhales her last breath. Even then, the richest class doesn't care about her death ; nobody, except her family, cares about her. Everyone is focused on fleeing or on Da-Song having a new seizure. But when the Parks' father is stabbed, his death is "clean", almost peaceful. It happens almost instantaneously, there's no blood and he falls slowly as if he's falling asleep. Of course, it triggers much more reactions in the onlookers. This moment just... spoke to me. I remembered Kim's father, Ki-Taek, saying that money is like an iron creasing out the edges of life, making it easier and more beautiful. Thus, Park's death is easy, quick, smooth, while Jessica struggles in her very last moments. I thought of media, turning a blind eye to atrocities happening in the lower classes, but documenting (which actually happens in the movie) things happening in the upper classes, smoothing out the edges, making it more manageable for the public, manipulating the way we perceive things. I'm probably looking too much into it, but who knows? Thank you for reading 💙

@blah blah man yeah you're right. A lot of people don't know how to handle money and one reason is because of school. We aren't teach about finances and taxes. The other reason is because a lot of poor/middle class people don't really care to inform themselves about it. That's also one truth that everyone wants to ignore. Now with the internet, people can learn almost anything in the world, still we speak about non-rich people as they were still living in caves. That's why hindi, chinese, koreans, japanese, nigerians etc. are kicking our asses, because they have a culture were they are request to study. so this whole premise of excusing poor people's evil and deceitful behavior to climb up the ladder, because rich=evil sounds very stupid to me. It's ironic how Kevin during the scene in their flooded home and shelter, he hugged the stone so much. His father even asked him about it and he says that there's something the stone seems to cling to him so dearly and it's the same stone that almost put him into death. That was the most striking scene for me. For me it represents the reality that sometimes that things that we cling on so dearly might also be the things that will harm us eventually. He holds on to that "false hope" or the stone that it also was used against him.

guess I'll die It wasn’t on Mr. Park, it was on Geun-sae’s hand, I think at that moment Mr. Park was actually disgusted with his smell this time instead of Mr. Kim. Notice how he is disgusted as soon as he moves his body over to get the keys. Unfortunately Mr. Kim realizes it immediately after the shot of the flies on Geun-sae. Brilliant movie!!

I just realized something: So I’ve seen a comment talking about how there was a parallel between the beginning of the movie and the ending since when ki-woo’s friend brings the "rock" that’s supposed to bring good luck to the family the mother says "u could’ve brought food instead" and at the end ki-woo brought the rock to the basement instead of food which was what Jessica was supposed to bring. But what if this was all a metaphor in order to criticize the Korean society. I think Bong Joon Ho made this parallel in order to say "stop giving us superstitions, prayers and wishing us good luck and give us solutions or money, food" The stone is pretty important throughout the movie to ki-woo he keeps it when their basement is flooded and when all the victims are sleeping after the flooding he still holds it tight and doesn’t let go of it. But at the end this stone which was supposed to bring them good luck and blessings only ended up killing them (metaphorically and literally) cause this stone is the main factor of all the tragedies that happened at the birthday party (ki-woo drops it, the man in the basement takes it, hits ki-woo in the head with it and goes upstairs and kills Jessica etc...) None of this would have happened if ki-woo left the stone alone. So I think the main message is superstitions ironically ends up killing the poor since poor people are actually the most superstitious which does nothing for them. Ps: it’s very long and I’m so sorry if it’s confusing English isn’t my first language.

The scene where the man in the basement manually turns on the lights for Mr. Park represents the fact that the ones who live in poverty as the lower class are the ones who supply the needs and comfort for those of the more fortunate upper class. *shook*

and because mr. park thinks it's just motion sensor reinforces this idea of the upper class mindset that the lower class' purpose is to work for them. the upper class have become used to it, expect it (the motion sensor), and ignore the lower class' own feelings/problems (when mrs. park thinks the light is just flickering/bugging when it's really the basement guy trying to send a message). this movie can be analyzed forever and i think i wouldn't mind doing just that, it's so wonderfully overwhelming

wow all of these comments are mind blowing. I have an observation to add, i noticed that the little boy (dasong) saw the lights flickering, and he knew it was morse code and unlocked the meaning but still chose to ignore it. i think it’s an analogy how people in general not just the rich, especially the young people choose to ignore important messages just because it’s out their comfort zone. Dasong didn’t tell his parents about maybe because it was raining and he didn’t want to get wet meaning young people don’t want to get their hands dirty because it’s not convenient. I’m just saying at this point lol it’s just a thought.
@juliyar16704 жыл бұрын
I’ve literally been thinking about this. They mentioned that the young boy knew Morse code and then we clearly see him reading it and then refusing to do anything about it. It’s just crazy to imagine that being in a higher class would cause you to dismiss a persons life. Unless he thought it was the ghost talking to him and was afraid to say anything 🤷🏼♀️

Ankit Gupta That’s the point they didn’t know they existed but they still got praised. The son knew someone was ‘needing help’ but chose to ignore it bc he was scared or out of his comfort zone and didn’t want to get dirty. Just the way people from higher social classes choose to dismiss problems/ atrocities that happen in the lower class bc it doesn’t affect them or bc they don’t want to get their hands dirty which goes back to the Mr.Park and the Mom being disgusted by the Kims smell
@pearline46844 жыл бұрын
I disagree with this point, I do think there is a metaphor behind this but I do not think that is a criticism towards the younger generation because given the themes of the movie that just would not make sense. Rather I see this more of a critique towards the older generation not believing the younger one and feeling superior. The boy told the parents that he had seen what he believed to be a ghost, instead of investigating even after their son also clearly suffered they just brushed it off as childish imagination. Moreover Da-Song even if he is just a child is also born and raised in a rich family and has adapted their beliefs and views of the world

The most depressing part is the final moment when the son tells his father that he will one day buy the house he lives under so he can simply “walk upstairs” when in reality he just got out on probation, he has no money, no good job, and he’s not in school. It’s a real downer because we all know it’s never gonna happen and he may surely die in that bunker....alone.

outside of the father having a heart attack or becoming crippled so he can't move, I would think the father (with how cunning they all were beforehand) would undergo a new alias and alter his appearance to re emerge into society. I don't know how hard it would be to use a forged identity for a bit to make some money and live somewhere? I know its depressing to think he just dies in the hole waiting to be reunited with his wife and son but that doesn't seem consistent with the resourceful people they were before for survival.
