the fact that the rich were just able to move houses, to escape the situation while the poor were left with the aftermath. Furthermore they feed off of the poor and there's so so many metaphors. (the scene where the dog eats the sausages on the skewer connected to the homeless man's body) A metaphor for the rich feeding on the poor under any circumstances, feeding off of their lives for their own pleasure and valuables. I am fairly convinced that the house itself is actually horrific. It has a very large front yard with no nice plants (just high grass), and it shows menacingly during the storm. It has larger than life bedrooms, massive kitchen to further boast the richness of the family. It has a basement large enough for people to round around in it, but the door to basement is a secret door and anything happen inside the basement can be kept secret (including killing and keeping bodies). It's a house of a crime lord.

Nah, some rich kid are trully talented. It just so happens that talent chooses no status in life. They could be rich or poor. Edits: I'm getting a lot of comment regarding this one, I am not defending the kid as a rich kid himself, but also for his art. Isn't this movie not suppose to romanticize the poor and the shit they did because of the richness of the rich? And that both were parasite of their own? And that, the lesson in the end for the guy is that the poor wouldn't be in that situation if they had their own life, started their own and not give a shit about what rich people do? I am not rich, so who is offended now? I'm talking at the perspective of an artist. Ever thought about how did these rich people become rich? They started from below, too. Worked their way up to the richness that they have now, some are even farmers before. Anyway, my point is, it was CLEARLY stated that the girl have the skills and what it takes to belong to that community. I myself used to envy kids who could afford expensive art materials back then, but when I started working towards my arts into a career, I've started to be able to buy the art materials that I used to just want back then. See, ever see the reason why these people are stealing other people's identity? Because they don't have one. Even the guy started at the beginning that it's just a practice until he starts going to a real school the next year. Why would you romanticize their poverty as if it's the rich's fault that they're poor, than start your own life. I've studied business ad, so I know that we are poor because we have a poor mindset. Although the kid might be priviledged, but as a parent, wouldn't you even secure the life of your children? Although we all want the kid to experience real life amidst his trauma, but isn't that what a therapist should do, to help? That thing that the girl pretended to do, yet are actually the ones who caused another and and more trauma to the kid. Oh, also, I've painted a building for a girl who studied in an art school, and I didn't. I could judge her work alright, but I decided, she has the right to study whatever she wants and I'm getting the job that I have as an artist now.

@@stefaniepodsiadly6244 Class traitor is a new term lol never heard that one b4. We learn new things everyday. Honestly, in the beginning I was actually impressed with the poor family being able to weasel their way into such positions. Manipulation and cunning, after all, still require skill and daring. However, as the show progressed, you can see that they were not only leeching off the rich, but they were willing to put down the poor as well. The mother didn't even hesitate in wanting to call the police when they found out about the bunker, even though they were all leeching off the rich family. Idk bout you but clearly theres no such thing as "class loyalty" here. The poor would not even hesitate to stomp out other poor people if it meant lowering the competition. Idk how anyone can say the poor family is in the right in this movie at all. Even if you take in account the fact that they may have been unlucky and raised in poor circumstances, the fact that they only continue to dig their hole deeper for themselves is actually cringe to watch. Instead of actually doing normal societal work, they try to take advantage of a gullible family, stepping over those of the same class (the ex house keeper) to do so. Literally, they mightve killed her with the peach deal. And in the end, the poor dad killed the rich dad because the latter couldnt stand the smell of poor people. Im not saying smelly people deserve to be mocked but the rich dad never explicitly or even directly told the poor dad he smelled or talked down to him about it. In fact, the only reason why the poor dad even know about the smell problem, is because they snuck into the damn house and took over it without permission. Then he goes and stabs the rich dad after getting triggered that the man was disgusted by the smell of the killer. Idk how anyone could say the rich family was in the wrong. And this video, too said that the rich is leeching off the poor. BUT THE RICH PAY THE POOR TO DO THE WORK? The poor family was getting paid for their services, how in hell is that called being leeched off. The poor was the one leeching off the rich through deception and lies. God bless those who actually see the rich family as some kind of family that deserved what happened. Oh and did I mention the poor family son had no hesitation whatsoever to steal his best bro's crush? The man who introduced him to the damn job to begin with? How tf was he gonna explain it to his boy? AND he tried to commit more murder to hide their secret, which apparently, one death was not enough. AND he fucked up and got himself killed so not only is he a murderer, hes an idiotic murderer. At least do the job right. So all in all, I was impressed by the poor family's ability to be able to leech off the poor but their own greed got ahead of them and they paid the price for it. I don't see it as karma but they should have been prepared for the consequences if they did get caught

@@EmptyHand49 that's not my point!, of course someone can improve their social lifestyle by working hard and stuff, however, they forget something really important when they reach the top: humility. Now that I re-read my comment I guess it can be misunderstood. What I wanted to say is that sometimes in real life people want to fit in a social class they don't belong to, they get the chance to get a well-paid job and they start to have a life full of luxuries and they start to be derogatory with others but what they don't know is how long that temporary wealth is gonna last (because they didn't born rich) and when is over they realise they were having a life that wasn't according to their reality and they end up the same or with nothing and they wish they could have saved all that money for important things in the future. You know, I live in latin america, and many people believe that having material wealth make them better than others, so they are all the time having debts with banks, with insurances, with the real estate, they buy luxury cars just to show it off and they end up paying it forever, etc, just because they wanted to belong to another society when in actuality that was never going to happen because they didn't spend/invest their money cleverly Many people end in bankruptcy for that, and those desires start when they start to see good money in their hands. But when is gone, they lose everything, including their minds That's my point. I hope it makes sense now :), sorry if I offended anybody

Ki-jung death was really striking, because she was the one who looked most likely to overcome poverty through her wits and determination, which could also be a metaphor for those people who are moving up the ladder and then dragged back down to poverty by debt, mismanagement or straight up sabotage due to envy.
@ziggystatdust6008
@ziggystatdust6008 3 жыл бұрын
I know this is a bit late, but another way to look at her death was the fact that the deceit and dishonesty through which people use to climb the social ladder will inevitably be their downfall. The reason why she seemingly "fits" is because she is an actress. Unlike her parents, and to a lesser extent, her brother, she easily dissolves into the persona she created because she is an expert in the field of forgery; she crafts artificial documents, backgrounds, personas. In the scene where the family are drunk around the Park's living room, after the son divulges his hopes of marrying the daughter and living in the house, he states that they need actors to play the role of his mother and father, and points to his sister stating that she gets so many jobs acting in weddings. She easily plays her role with a steady sense of direction, and as such to me was the most believable as her role. Her death, as well as her father's act of murder, bring to light the forgery documents and fake identity of the brother and mother. Her death symbolizes the downfall of the corrupt and dishonest. It also symbolizes the fact that no matter how talented and cunning you are, and no matter how much you strive and work hard, if you do not have the wealth and status of the upper class, you will never make it.

But they aren't really the same. There are different levels within each social class. The Kim family doesn't have any debt even though they are poor. They can live out in the open world. The former maid's family is in debt and has to live even deeper underground than the Kim family. It's showing that people are divided. There's always someone worse off than you and there's always someone to look down on. Instead of Mrs. Kim recognizing that they're both struggling, she decided to flaunt what little privilege she had and refuse the former maid.

There are other examples of euro centric beauty that can be used: light hair/eyes, a specific face/body shape.

smell is such a strong theme in the film. the scene where the little boy notices that the new driver, the new maid & jessica all smell the same by embracing them to deeply inhale their scent shows that the projected elitism from the rich are socially constructed whilst the little boy shows no signs of disgust towards their smell because his youth’s innocence has protected him from being tainted by the ignorance of his parents perspective.

Excellent analysis. I love 'Parasite". I think it's one of the greatest films ever. It's so symmetrically crafted in it's storytelling, it's one of those rare films I watched again as soon as I got done with my first view. There are some other things it encapsulates with more subtlety I find worth mentioning: The rich family is not a family in the sense of a closely bonded family. The poor family, as much difficulties as they face, have genuine bonds. The scheming nature of the children make the father proud, as he had a direct hand in teaching them how to survive using deception and manipulation. The Parks have a loveless marriage, the one bit of intimacy that is portrayed between Mr. and Mrs. Park tells us she can only tolerate his sexual advances while heavily medicated and shows that, as with everyone and everything else, Mr. Park views his wife as little more than an object. This borderline sexual assault plays out as the family is hiding under the furniture, allowing them to see how empty the lives of the people they spent their whole lives dreaming to live like, the same class of people who they've also spent their life in service to. The father becomes especially disillusioned when witnessing this. The Parks do not interact in any meaningful way with their children and rely on tutors, housekeepers and simply spoil their badly behaved son as if that will fix the issues of being devoid of parental love and bonding. Mr. Park will go to great lengths to ensure his son's party is great, but it is mostly out of vanity and conforming to the social hegemony of wealthy S. Korean "culture". Just the contrast of how the poor family behaved while feasting in their night of upper class fantasy and how the Parks are never all together - they set up the son's teepee outside and the daughter is almost always in her room. There is no closeness even within their walled garden, they've become so accustomed to the pressures of social hegemony that they don't even realize they are walling each other off. It's an interesting contrast. Were Mr. Park to live, his son certainly would never end up with such respect that he writes a heartfelt letter to him promising he will do everything to set things right and do it by the book and the law.. One family is poor yet has each other, the other is wealthy and finds that a sufficient enough reward and thus leaves their children with no love and guidance, relying on stink bugs with counterfeit certifications to prepare their children for testing and college....

Thank you for making Korean subtitles. I really didn't know... Through your video, I realized that parasites are not just about Kiwoo's family. I was also poor, so I sympathized with the Kiwoo family while watching this movie.A year before I watched this movie, I also took care of rich children. The rich families were very kind and gave a lot of money. The house was big and there was a housekeeper. At that time, I always put a lot of perfume on myself before I went to work. I don't think they'll hire me anymore if I smell poor, but I think it was the pride I could do. I was embarrassed because I was like me after watching this movie a year later. I also felt the pain of the livestock that we eat deliciously after seeing your review. I don't see their pain in front of me, but the pain of a mother cow in a glass of milk. Plus if it weren't for that stone, then the son wouldn't have tried to go under the shelter alone in the first place, He was confident given that he had a huge stone to protect himself, but what if he didn't? The maid was already dead even before the son went down, so for sure only the husband pose as a threat to them. Things like the Monroe Doctrine; the CIA's Cointelpro Ops against anarchists, socialists, reformists, and militias in the '60s--'90s; the blatant proxy wars between the US and Russia over the late 1900s; the CIA's toppling of and replacement of south american democracies with autocratic pro-capital dictators; or the blatant purchase of the United States Government by home grown and foreign global conglomerates are only subtle if you haven't been paying attention. Wake the fuck up.

Thank you for Thought provoking analysis, but Director Bong is for illuminati , he wants to be their dog so he is shaking his ass to illuminati . That's why he is winning all the awards . It is about social class and has similar theme like Downton Abbey. Manipulating audiences , the rich deserve to be rich. Pre - program propaganda film that try to make public more content with coming reality, two classes system: master and slave

@The Dude who the fuck talked about communism?, why do capitalist lovers always have to straw man everything into communism to have a point?, communit does not work , that's pretty obvious, capitalist just works better and its better at giving enought power to the upper schalon.

The Dude Capitalism isn’t a government but it affects the government greatly. In America when capitalism was established during the industrial revolution and the emergence of big businesses the government became way more corrupt. Along with government agencies caring more about profit than the people, letting influential businesses pay them off to not check their harmful products. (This led to food issues) And yes this happened before the time period but it became increasingly worse during that time and those situations still happen today they’re just subtle about it. And once capitalism was introduced more people became rich but the gap between the rich and the poor became wider and still increases to this day. And yet some people still think they can achieve the wealth that Bill Gates has but in reality money like that is the top one percent of the top one percent. They way capitalism is right now is a major problem. Too many people are dying because of poverty. Not everyone should be rich but most people shouldn’t be poor.

I was thinking that the movie intentionally showed it floated, it might have been a mistake initially but they kept it in for a reason. It represented how the Kims (more importantly, Ki-woo, since he’s the one who truly believed that that stone was powerful as claimed by Minhyuk) is holding on to a “hollow” and empty hope, the hope of being able to overcome the struggle of poverty they have and eventually get a positive turn-around in their lives. Also, the fact that it was given by Min-hyuk to the Kims says a lot-Min Hyuk comes from a comfortable life, his position in lives are different from the Kims. And the fact that he has given it to the Kims could imply that the destitute are given empty promises by the rich that their lives will soon change for the better.

Can I just say one thing! As a current film student with a degree in Social Anthropology it is so cool to see how I can analyse movies through the social sciences perspectives. I have read Gramsci so many times, so it is really cool to see how his theories can be used in movies as well, really cool!

Another lesson that can be drawn out of this is how easily the "rags-to-riches" individuals tend to forget their roots or where they started from. The Kims, once they are secured in their jobs and view themselves as moving up the wealth ladder, act the part of the rich. They dismiss the former cook's pleas to help her and her husband, despite the fact that they are similar. But another aspect that drew me to this conclusion was their initial dismissal of the rain. Where I live, whenever it rains, my first thought is of flooding, because my home tends to get flooded no matter how light or heavy the rain is. When the Kims are sitting in the Park's living room overlooking the window to the thunder and rain, the father remarks how wonderful the sight is. Their first thought wasn't of their basement-dwelling, and the worry of the potential of the floodwaters flooding their room, which was very much likely to happen given their home location. No, they were too busy contemplating their success and drinking to give a momentarily thought to who they are and where they came from. This happens quite often to wealthy people who came from poor backgrounds. The need to assimilate into the "rich persona" subsumes their old identity, until it is eventually expunged from the new persona they have adapted to because now, it has no place. As a result, they suffer the consequences of adopting a false identity in order to fit into a social class.

I saw that scene differently! When it was raining and they were in the Park’s family house, they had been oblivious to the sheer impact of the rain due to being surrounded by an abundance of riches that for a few days saw to be their own. This shows how shielded the upper echelon are from the sheer impact of something as simple as a storm, when you find yourself in an environment completely different from your own, you tend to forget that your reality is not the same as another’s in upper rankings. It’s not necessarily that they had not thought nor cared about their home being flooded, but that they hadn’t truly seen the impact due to being shielded from the reality of the storm in the Parks massive house. It reveals the obliviousness of rich people when it comes to simply phenomena such as weather, this is also shown when the Park’s son willingly camps out in the rain comfortably whilst the Kim family see this rain as a disaster once they are forcibly brought back to reality by the Park’s family early return home.

Well honestly for me when it rained, I just thought about how the rich family is going camping but bc it rained they're totally gonna come back. So thts y throughout the whole scene of then being drunk in the living room I was just screaming internally cause I'm scared for them getting caught. Ironically they never worried bout the possibility at all.
