Yeah, younger people are not picking up bowling and it has been dying out. I grew up in the 60's and 70's, and that was the heyday of bowling. In my town, we had around 30 bowling centers in the heyday and they started closing down in the early 2000's. We only have two bowling centers left.

Honestly, bowling at an alley that old is a dream of mine. Especially since bowling is my passion and since I’ve dedicated my whole life to it. I dream just to have me swing a HyRoad from 40 all the way out to 5 and see it hit flush pocket on almost 100 year old lanes and pins. The thrill for me would be the best experience of my life 💯
@nordattack2 жыл бұрын
If you want to bowl on Vintage Lanes and know what it was like to bowl in that era, then don't use a HyRoad. Use a real bowling ball. A rubber ball. I plan on going there and will take my vintage rubber ball and enjoy the game the way it was played by the giants of the past.

I have a soft spot for bowling alleys, because my father ran one during my high-school years in the late 1940s. I remember the clatter of the pin-spotters, the rumble of the balls, the smell of chalk, and the enamel on the freshly turned pins.

I came here once and I never plan to again. 1) So many damn hipsters. 2) For their price I can literally enjoy unlimited play at a modern alley with more drinks. 3) The atmosphere really gives you a “don’t be loud” vibe. This place is for people who have themselves on a high horse.

I used to be the kind of kid who took apart all my mechanical and electrical toys. I'm still that, except for the 'kid' part. I like the non-hidden mechanisms! I'd love to bowl there! But two things make it difficult -- I'm nowhere near LA any more, and I'm not a bowler (yet). What a wonderful place to be, so different in look and feel from the outdoors in LA, from modern commercial/retail design, from most of modern life and chaos. A charming place, maybe a bit antiquey, but a big change of scenery, a visit to a different world almost, a break from everyday.

Here in Nashville, we have a new and small bowling and entertainment venue. It has 4 modern lanes and pinsetters and a stage for music performances. It has an older decor feel to it. This place looks like a dive and not that well maintained. For the 60 bucks an hour they charge to bowl there, you would expect a historically restored experience.

To clarify, those machines are not original. Back in the day, bowling alleys would have someone in back who set up the pins and threw the ball down the return chute back to you. These automatic machines, which are Brunswick model A, A2, or Jetback, would have been from the late 50s at the oldest. (AMF was first in the early 50s, but theirs are a very different design.) They are mostly mechanical, functioning with switches and buttons triggered by the weight of the pins themselves. Those wood lanes, however, look original and authentic. Modern day lanes are mostly wood-look synthetic material, similar in idea and reason to AstroTurf in outdoor sports: they require less maintenance.
