I confess, what I noticed right away when I watched Encanto was: all the different skin tones, hair types & body forms, and it made me so so happy to see this! With Encanto people see what a lot of Latin families look like- often a mix of so many beautiful cultures & peoples. Can have the same parents but the kids come out all really really varied. From blonde to black hair, straight locks to tight curls, short to tall in height, very light to very dark skin & every size too- all in one family. The same with the town's people in Encanto, a Latin community or city can be just as varied too! It was accurate.

Yep, and in "traditional" entertainment at least 90% of that isn't ever allowed in front of the camera, for not being slim, tall, young, pretty or "mainstream" (guess!) enough. It's actually shocking to see a move that _does_ show a realistic society, and realize that this is the exception. Man am I glad we're moving away from that.

When I was watching Encanto, I found myself paying a lot of attention to the fabric and hair physics going on. It’s mesmerizing to watch the dancing, how the skirts and hair moves and bounces during it all.

I actually took a lot of notice with the curly hair in encanto. I really appreciated it because I have probably around 3a if not 2c (think mirabel) and I haven’t really seen hair like that in an animated movie, like the hair was one of the first things I noticed because it looked so similar to mine with the bounce and the shine and the insane frizz. I appreciate it.

That part where we get a close up of Mirabel crying at the river it was the perfect angle where I had a feeling of recognition because my hair used to look just like hers when I had it short as a teenager. I had never felt that way before and proceeded to quietly burst into happy tears.

Its just insane how realistic Encanto itself looks. The hair on Luisas Neck or the movements of the plants,trees and other people in the Background. Or the different textures in total. You cant even see, that these textures are copied and placed next to the same. I never found any Texture, that is similar to another. And most people dont even look that close. Honestly, i prefer this way over reality.

I'm so glad someone mentions the baby hairs on Luisa's neck. I remember noticing them after I rewatched 'Surface Pressure' and I was so impressed with that little detail that I never really paid any attention to. Like, they could have not went the extra mile to put those hairs on Luisa's neck and no one would have noticed, but they did.

Its soooo impressive how far Animation has come. I wanted to watch the movie with my mum, but shes not interested into animated movies and rather watch live action movies. i think its sad.. the movie has a great massage and its pretty realistic to me. Like i said. I prefer this over reality. I think its easier to capture emotion on a animated Character and that makes them kinda feel more realistic to me..? idk,haha.

Bolt was one of my favorite movies as a kid. Altough I found the movie a bit confusing, because I also believed Bolt had superpowers just like he himself did. I thought that he lost his powers somehow and I also didn't understand why the girl had to pick out a new dog. Lastly I thought that the trailer they stayed in at the beginning was their base, their hideout.

It’s incredible how well Disney was able to balance the engineering side and artistic side of hair animation. Engineers probably weren’t huge fans of having to integrate artistic controls into physics based simulations, and the artists probably had some beefs with the limits to their control. I hope they continue developing this technology on both sides, and I’m excited to see what will come next! I’m guessing box braids would be fairly easy with the technology we already have, but a leading lady with a magical Disney style afro is next on my wish list.

A lot of the engineering behind physics simulations is actually a lot cooler than you think, because you get to create the physics of your OWN world! That's breaking boundaries on what most engineers get to do! Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if the software was similar to the protein model stimulations biologist and geneticist use, especially for coils. I'm with you, I can't wait for a magical afro in some inspired Disney tale!

I only disagree with your idea on engineers being unhappy having to integrate art. All of the engineers i know would be so excited to build a vision that would advance their industry the way this technology has. Think of the instance with the water algorithm in Frozen II being so good the US GOVERNMENT came knocking. You really can't have science without art.

As a curly haired person it makes me really happy! I started noticing that curly hair is not present in games and animations just some time ago and I figured that it's probably because it's hard to animate curls. I'm almost never able to customize my character in games to look like me, because of the lack of curly hair and as dumb and insignificant as it may seem, it really bummed me. My curls are important to me. When I was a kid I was often bullied because of them, but I've grown to love and fully accept them as a part of me so I wish I was able to fully express it when creating a character in game and see curly haired people in animations that I love to watch!

Pixar is usually ahead of the curve in most cases. By the time Disney did tangled, Pixar had been doing hair simulations for years and years.

I think part of the trick is to understand the physics, and the 'teach' them to a computer. That's why animation can move science forwards: if you want to imitate something, or recreate something, you first have to understand it. And if you use current knowledge to recreate something in a computer, and it doesn't act the way it should, then either you made a mistake, or the science is still missing something.

Its amazing how technology and animation has come so far and the fact that more hair types can be represented in more detail - but to be honest I do miss the hand drawn movies very much so and personally prefer them and the classic style which I grew up with - where the details may of been less but in my view the characters somehow looked more realistic (without the 3D big eyes and same-face style) and have started watching their on the side tv shows that present that style. I wish we could still see more of it in a movie now n then but hey I did love encanto

not only did encanto show a lot of diversity with hair types, but it also showed a lot of diversity with facial structure. disney has had a repeated problem with making all their female characters facial structures look the same, especially their 3d ones. but no female character in encanto looks the same. although moana and ralph breaks the internet both led to the evolution of disneys female characters though, like with moana, pocahontas, jasmine, and mulan. disney has come a long way.

the way disney/pixar designs their hair is just so beautiful. even if tangled is a bit outdated now, i cant help but still watch in awe at how well they animated her hair. same goes with moana, i was very excited to see disney animation go from straight hair and try out wavy/curly types. the way encanto was animated in general.. i have absolutely no words for how realistic it was developed. the characters’ hair moved like it was actually real, (and less like string attached to a doll’s head) it really tied the movie altogether with great storytelling. i cant wait to see where disney brings their creativity to next.

I'm chubby myself, which is another version of "no heroine ever looks like you!", and yep, you could diet and exercise yourself into the right 'heroine-worthy' shape, just like you could straighten and bleach your hair into the traditional European-centric ideal. My guess would actually be facial hair and body hair. The closest thing we have to that is animal hair and fur, and while I don't think it would be too difficult with the current tools available I also don't think it has actually been done to the same level as 'head' hair.

The way I'm crying so much right now after watching this. As a person with Curly hair, this has shown me how important representation, even with hair, is. Growing up, you are surrounded by a lot of hate and criticism because you have not straigh hair. calling it ugly , dry, and bad hair, to the point you feel the need to use products to make it straigh so you can feel less criticised from people always commenting on it. Even your own family. Watching has mame truly appreciate the beauty of the curly hair, how it moves, its uniqueness, character, which is different from straigh here, but AS beautiful! I wish I had this when I was growing up so I didn't hate myself so much just because of my hair as well. Thank you Insider for making this video, and thank you Disney animators for creating movies that represent people from different places. Representation it's so important. I was rewatching Aladdin once and started to focus on the character's hair, I was looking at how 2D hair was made and what techniques were used to make it look real. A while later I was watching Entanto again and in one scene I was blown away with the hair physics, then I was only looking at their hair and it looked real and interacted in its environment like one would expect it to. Shocking work that pulled off by Disney.

When I watched Encanto, I was absolutely fascinated with the hair from pretty much the moment the movie started. It was so cool to see not only my own hair texture represented, but so many others as well. My hair is the same texture and almost the same length as Mirabel's and it was just so amazing to see that on the screen. It might seem small to some people, but I think it goes a log way toward helping people to understand that straight hair is not the only type that's beautiful. I always say the best hair texture is whatever grows out of your head. It was also amazing to see such a variety of body types and sizes, as well as skin colors. It's a great step forward, and I hope this will become the norm going forward.

For me, one shocking things about Encanto is that you suddenly realized how narrow "diversity" in movies & on tv is (and some *****s are already getting panic attacks about the wokeness!!!!) : "the team of slim beautiful sexy straight-haired women has more than one non-WASP in there, amazing!" I'm glad that we are slowly moving past that "one quota POC" pattern. Even growing up with what Hollywood thinks is standard female hair (of course, _I_ tried to get curls into it!), representations of females tend to be so narrow and idealized, it just messes up your self-perception. And I'm still not over things African-American singers/actresses seemingly turning 'whiter' the more they turn up on magaizne covers. Like, success magically zaps melanin and straightens hair? WT..? When I try to imagine what that does to teenage girls, my brain just refuses to picture it.

I go to a school where mostly everyone has straight hair so sometimes I would want to straigten it, but after seeing Mirabel's hair, it makes me love my curls even more because I love how it looks and we have almost the same hair type!! It is very close to mine (I'm a type 3a I think)

Well, any girl with long hair (as in: bra band or lower) will tell you: the most magical thing about Rapunzel's hair is that she can move about for five minutes without it being an unholy mess of tangles. And yes, I absolutely love the diversity in Encanto. The shocking thing is that you suddenly realize how bloody rare that is, and that we are barely moving away from the "diverse group of girls is one where one of the straight-haired slim sexy teenagers is Afro-American, oh wow!"

Disney should share this hair simulation program with 3D animators in general. It would be revolutionary. Imagine videogames with Type 4 hair(apparently the animators say it's hard to do) & cartoons where everyone can see themselves represented(changing the world doesn't start with adults, it starts with the kids).

Tbh in films like toy story 4 all disney has to brag about was like "look at how well we can animate a cat that contributes nothing to the scene other than for flexing" But encanto is truly a masterpiece from every aspect especially the plot, familial problems are nothing new but they write the story in such an amazing way that it's entertaining, funny, sad, insanely relatable with great ending. They also made the right choice to cut out some unneccesarry parts from the movie

My baby brother (age 7) started noticing and appreciating our natural african hair after we watched Encanto together. When our mom would often say that i should style it differently (implying less afro-esque) my brother would say that he liked it and that it looked like Mirabelle. i remember being his age and hating back then my dark coily hair. Diversity is so important and I'm so glad today's youth will get to be heroes of ton of inspiring stories.

Moana’s animation (specifically the hair) truly blew me away. It still does to this day. I watch it not only enjoying the storyline but also appreciating the amazing carefully thought out animations. It brings me a lot of joy for some reason haha

Is it any consolation that you can absolutely be an outsider with long straight blonde hair? Because as far as high school society is concerned, you also need to be slim, with perfect skin, no glasses, and no opinions. Not worth the bloody trouble, in my opinion. okay but didn't they mention that mother Gothel has curly hair in tangled, they kind of already had done a curly haired character and it wasn't a first time thing when it came to moana's hair also, Merida from brave is an honorable mention since it is a disney movie and came out wayyy earlier than Moana, still this video is very amazing and shows the progress and evolution of disney's hair programming skills they have developed throughout the years they really improved!

I loved seeing Mirabels hair so much, my curls used to look exactly like that as a kid. Since then I’ve either cut my hair short and bleached it whenever it got long, so my curls have been a bit looser/less visible as a result, so I land somewhere between Mirabel and Bruno. Watching the movie with my mom was super fun as well, we kept trying to figure out which character had the closest hair to us (my moms is most like Camilo’s haha)

So, I have a fairly large TV and paused Encanto to eat lunch. There's baby hair on their faces, peeps. Like tiny peach fuzz as normal people do. Very cool and almost pointless detail that no one would actively notice.
