Guys, I was there and they didn't make us clap, it just happened. I was 18 and this was my second gig, I was a couple of rows behind the dark haired girl on the left of the picture and it was pretty quiet until they played Sultans! Then it kicked off. Everyone was clapping and jumping, we thought the balcony might not take it, you could feel it jumping under your feet! This band were on top of their game and the best of the best at the time: Mark Knopfler - guitar, vocals Alan Clark - keyboards John Illsley - bass guitar, backing vocals Hal Lindes - guitar, backing vocals Terry Williams - drums Tommy Mandel - back up keys They were all brilliant, but as you saw as well, Terry Williams on the drums was outstanding, he always played at 100 MPH, but it was perfect as well. Over 40 years later its still up there. We are so lucky that the top tech at the time was used to record it and we can enjoy it. Now, you have to watch Telegraph Road from this gig, its the law! Mark Knopfler's admiration for Chet Atkins (a Country music pioneer) and the projects they were later to work on together as well as the strong friendship they developed. Mark after Dire Straits would do Country as it has roots also in his Scottish musical roots. Giving Chet Atkins credit in Mark's evolving of his own style. Both also used a thumb pick and did eventually get to play together.
@graemeyАй бұрын
Mark doesn't have Scottish musical roots. He was born in Scotland to an English mother and Hungarian father and moved to England when he was 7. All his early musical influences were from within his family and from the Tyneside music scene where he was involved in a number of local bands from an early age.
@davidw7Ай бұрын
@@graemey Point is... He clearly gives it credit in links. Look up one titled for one - Mark Knopfler on his return to Local Hero: how he penned the songs for the new Scottish musical. In the link is also his own comments.... Knopfler, who was born in Glasgow in 1949 and moved to Newcastle when he was seven, revealed he drew on his Scottish childhood musical memories for the more than 20 songs he has written for the show. “I used to listen to records when I was very, very small, probably before I was two: I was listening to the radio and my mum singing. So it’s natural to me." "I think it is partly coming from Glasgow, and from being in Scotland, and from the north east, where my mother’s family is from. There are huge links between the Geordies and the Scots.” As a American... I should not have to note such things. He also gives the Blues a nod... and of course his love for US Country music whose roots are in Scotch-Irish heritage mixing with some Blues. Leading to Rock-abilly and Country Rock/Blues leading to music the Beatles to Stones and others credit they took from. Mark again did that Country music aspect later in life and it all is connected .... not really English if that is the claim to take from others of the Isle?
@graemeyАй бұрын
@@davidw7 I have never heard him mention his Scottish influences before. Typically he refers to his upbringing on Tyneside and musical influences there, as in this chat with Brian Johnson in Whitley Bay: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5DTkqlrqL6ma9U He also credits listening to BBC radio programmes broadcast from London in his childhood, e.g. Listen with Mother and Children's Favourites, there wouldn't be any Scottish influences there. During his childhood, before commercial radio, when the BBC was the only body allowed to broadcast, there were only 4 national radio stations, none of them Scottish. I am not sure where he would be exposed to much Scottish music before the age of 7.
@davidw7Ай бұрын
@@graemey I think the point of he was as if too young no longer in Scotland with his parents moving to Newcastle and therefore he could not really have much of a Scottish influence.... was what I was correcting. He noted in numerous links later in life of his connection and of course the US Country/Blues one and a legacy Country guitarist and pioneer... Chet Atkins. So further details do not change why I comment that yes he did gain Scottish influence he said even at 2-yrs old in his development and to lessen it serves little as my point. His own words claimed it and whom and heritage he credits.

Corey, I appreciate that you 'get' it (although your buddy at the bottom of the screen seemed unimpressed 🤨). Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists: He is known for his unique finger-plucking style (doesn't use a pick like other guitarists), his excellent tone, his nuanced and emotive phrasing, and his phenomenally dynamic arrangements of their tracks, in addition to being the songwriter. Their live performances are always amazing, and their crowds always show their appreciation, and participate (you can oftenhear the crowd singing when he performs "Brothers in Arms" live, which you should check out from Live- On The Night , 1992). A couple of other performances from this same live Alchemy concert are worth reacting to, if you haven't already: (1) "Telegraph Road" is a collective musical masterpiece that really showcases what they were capable of pulling off on stage; (2) "Once Upon a Time in the West" is the other great track. I will always tune in to see a Dire Straits reaction!!! 💙

The studio version of "Sultans of Swing" was Dire Straits' first single from their 1978 debut album. The two Alchemy concerts were years later, in 1983, at which point the band personnel had changed almost completely. The concerts were at the end of a months-long tour so the band was super tight, and most of the tracks became legendary. There was a double "Alchemy Live" album released the next year, supposedly truly live recordings with no studio tinkering.
