Quadrophenia: The Mod Scene Reborn

By 1972 The Who wanted to do more. While just coming off of two major albums (Tommy and Who's Next) it didn't go the way they wanted. At the core of the issue is Pete Townshend, who just failed to put together the wildly ambitious Lifehouse concept. Putting his sci-fi dystopia to the side, he instead looked back on where the band started and the movement that supported them: the mod scene. With it in mind, Townshend gathered the band and recorded Quadrophenia. To celebrate it's fiftieth anniversary, I created this video.

I think The Who actually rewired my brain with this and Who's Next. My father was a massive fan and I got to hear these records in the mid to late 1980's.

The early Mods, and even the mid 60's Mods, were mainly into American Soul Music and RnB. Mods were all about dressing up and dancing. I think The Rockers were an extension or a branch off The 50's Teddyboys. The "Teds" as they were known loved Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent and Rockabilly. They had a very distinctive dress sense that included Brothel Creepers, Drainpipe Pants and Edwardian Coats. Both John Lennon and Paul McCartney considered themselves "Teddyboys" in the 50's.
