I was born in Canada, my parents were Portuguese immigrants and I've been living in Portugal since 1998, WAY before Portugal became popular and trendy. Interestingly, there are three constitutionally melancholic peoples in Europe: the Russians, the Hungarians and the Portuguese. I think there is definitely an Old World - New World dynamic whenever comparing Canada with either Portugal or Russia.

it certainly depends on the people you are hanging with because from my experience going out to dinner only at 10pm is not something most portuguese do... that seems more like the Spanish norm! People usually schedule dinning out for around 8:30 - 9 PM. A lot of portuguese who drink coffee at night will tell you that it doesn't affect them, while others will ask for decaffeinated instead... Many people in Portugal get desensitised from caffeine, probably because they drink so many expressos.

I think it depends, normally dinner starts between 8-9 pm in Portugal, but a lot of people work until night and need to dinner later so that's why. We can say is a spectrum it can go from total rural schedule (waking super early and eating super early dinners like 6-7pm) to metropolitan schedules that can vary depending on the schedule to late hours.

Ok, so the law allows people to film in public (not inside stores) HOWEVER people have the right to request to be blurred or to delete it. But yes, you are allowed to film without previous consent. Finally, if you want to shoot something and intend to make money out of it, then, that is a whole different thing and permission should be required on the government website eportugal gov pt.

@@ThisisYulia you can film in public, what you cannot do is film people deliberately without their permission and in a way that would be perceived as an invasion of privacy or detrimental to their image/reputation... I've never heard of that and I live in Portugal for 20 years. She's probably referring to "bacalhau com natas" (codfish with milkcream) but probably she never tried it and thinks it's mayo or some other ignorant expat told her it's mayo and she goes with the flow. Same of portuguese ordering an 'espresso', in Portugal a 'café' or a 'bica' is an espresso by default. The issue is that Lisbon became a tourist trap and the simple "café" is now advertised as 'espresso' so foreigners know what they are ordering.

There are a few countries that have this inner helping thing like us, culture shocks are subjective but the way that this videos where made, show's an anger that every body sees, I know a lot of countries, and when I visit them, I embrace their culture, and try to learn as much as I can, like you would like people to embrace your own country when visiting! The problems are created by immigration most of the times and if you watch the news, rarely you will see murders or Roberts by force, but you will see a lot of domestic violence, and even pick pocket are foreigners most of the times. And we have low income jobs (perfect for capitalists company who like very high end quality products and services at a slave price), but hey we have free healthcare ranked high in the world and fantastic wheather, now if u think that calmness and freedom of speech is to much for you probably this is not the coolest or the bestest country. This is Yulia · This is Yulia 1 reply This is Yulia 1 month ago (edited) *first of all, I speak Portuguese. second of all, I've been to other cities in Portugal including small villages. I've had that “Portuguese” experience you're talking about and I still don't like it. I'm speaking from MY experience, I don't get that hate from people like you* this is one of your respond I read all comments after finishing your video, this is my first video from you I can't give my opinion about the others like some people here First I was actually surprised to see so little rude comments about sending to you to go to your country, most of them were very polity to say the same thing Now about Dinner time, a less is a night out until very late or early in the morning is normal and correct to having a good dinner later than usually after all you will be drinking all night, apart from that we normally have dinner at 8pm I miss the June parties a lot, I love sardines, it's a tradition just like Fado is, in fact I was like please don't speak ill of fado repeat to myself because if you did, your comment area would be bad, because you might not like fado but to speak ill of it is like a crime for the Portuguese at least most of us About coffee yes some people drink a lot but not all ,like me for example I love coffee where I live I take a bus 40 mts to be able to visit a Portuguese café and drink it, but my daughter doesn't like it so you can't generalize because yes many people love their coffee and can drink 4 or 5 a day others don't drink 1 lol I was thinking about the cod dishes, as almost everyone has already said we have many and the same recipe can be made in several areas of the country, with some differences depending on the area in your video you say 3 and in the comments you say 5 you can find them in restaurants well in a single restaurant it's kind of normal to find only five because they have different meat, chicken and vegetarian dishes and depending on the size you can't expect to find more than that right? Now about Lisbon being very dirty, Lisbon is one of the oldest capitals in Europe and it is kind of a big city that receives many tourists and opens its arms for many foreigners to live and with that, yes, some Portuguese can be a little dirty just like the tourist and foreigners is something we all need to improve About your Portuguese, yes, you speak it, but when you say BUENO that it's not Portuguese and it's a word you should say often, a less you really don't find anything BOM and don't use the word When you say *I still don't like it* it's very noticeable in your body language and it's normal for people to say if you don't like it why do you stay and if you give that kind of feeling to the people of the country will it be normal they respond in the same way or worse actually, not that I agree with the rude comments, you can say the same without being rude but I kind of understand, Portuguese can be really nice, but if he senses your disdain for the beloved country any patriot will say the same no matter the country

Hey! Dunno why KZbin randomly suggested this but I liked your video! Okay so I'm Portuguese and I kind of agree with most of the statements you made, especially coffee and close blinds, that's so true! Unfortunately also the part about dog poo is true...of course some people care about cleanliness but there are some others that really get on my nerves... Still, dealing with dinner I think it depends on age. Most elders will dinner at 7-8PM and many places actually close by 9-10. Really, it varies based on where you hang out (of course more central areas, tourist areas or places where there are loads of students or shopping centres restaurants are open until 11 or so). Dealing with filming I think you might have bumped into some quirky folks haha! I mean, if you're tailing someone filming them that's obviously illegal but otherwise it's generally okay to take pics and/or film places/streets. Maybe some specific shops have a different policy but that never occurred to me Now, the food thing - I've got to say, I utterly disagree there! There are like a gazillion ways to cook bacalhau (although bacalhau with mayo is a new one for me, maybe you meant "natas"?). I think that maybe what you have noticed is not that food is all identical but is more "very local", meaning it's more like each place has its super local vibe. Restaurants tend to stick to a specific culinary tradition and have a small menu. Desserts are a great example - All foreigners know pastéis de nata because they're from Lisbon, and tourists tourists tend to stay in Lisbon. Don't get me wrong, I love pastéis, but there's so much more to explore! Like fradinhos (Mafra), Filhós (North), Sericaia (Alentejo), ovos moles (Aveiro)... the thing is, you have to go to those places to taste them! Moreover, most local recipes are actually hard to find in most restaurants (aletria, bolo do caco - love it! -, canja de galinha...) and many cook it at home. So make sure to ask your Portuguese friends to cook their "family food" for you and I assure you'll love it! :) In the meanwhile, if you fancy something traditional but different you may want to try Luzboa or Carvoaria Jacto in Lisbon, but there are really loads of options! Edit: but, weren't you shocked by the cold?! Most foreigners (especially Britons) who move here think that Lisbon is sunny 365 days a year and so on. That's why most are shocked when winter (along with very rainy days) arrives

Hi Yulia. About filming and taking pictures, the portuguese law is something like this. If you are not in the street you must ask permission of the owner of the facilities. If you are in the street you are allowed to take pictures and to film if you do not target someone in particulary. Because if you do, you must have her permission (you can not take pictures or film members of the law or you may have of your film/camera seized). The exceptions are public persons (actors, politicians, etc).

There are at least 365 different recipes for bacalhau (one for each day of the year). You get no "twists" on standard dishes if you're eating the "prato do dia" for 8 euros. Go to restaurants where you spend at least 40 euros per person and you'll find that their dishes are all "the chef's interpretation" of traditional dishes. It's all a matter of budget. Fur coats: women wear fur coats in our "cold summer" season...

@@ThisisYulia Politically incorrect suggestion: look for expensive-ish (but not too expensive) restaurants where all the waiters look very gay... Note: Why not too expensive? Because the very expensive ones tend to specialize in the traditional dish made with the freshest and highest quality ingredients. It's the mildly expensive small-ish restaurants that do twists. Especially when the chef looks very gay. My opinion anyway. If you happen to drop by Torres Vedras, try Roots in Parque da Várzea. Check their site and you'll see that many of the dishes on their menu are slightly weird, for instance: cogumelos à Bulhão Pato (instead of amêijoas à Bulhão Pato) atum braseado com sopa de caldeirada e crocante de mandioca magret de pato com puré de marmelo e roã etc

The food in the azores was pretty bland. We went in March keep hearing how wonderful the seafood was. NYEEeeT was kinda surprised Also .. No deli's. None Finally found rotisserie chicken (Portugese rotisserie chicken) in a grocery store. Bought that and salad material and a collapsible mixing bowl and colander combo (great souvenir) and we bought lots of cheap wine and ate dinner in our room or on the rooftop patio at our hotel. The food avail in fine dining was very disappointing. The best BEST lunches were at the firehall. Next to the high school that had a cafeteria for the students and tourists and locals. Cheap cheap cheap. Great offerings and when have you been to a cafeteria that had great house wine? Also good food at the one and only golf course on the island. Western food mostly.

It's totally bogus that you're not allowed to film in public in Portugal. What you cannot do is to purposefully focus on specific people and film them without their consent. But suppose you're recording yourself or recording a building or a square or whatever, and you're not focusing on specific people with the intent to film them, in that case you're totally allowed to capture people in the background and no one can ask you to delete the footage. If you're recording people and using the footage for commercial purposes, then you have a problem. But generally speaking, it's legal to capture random people on your footage.
