London Bridge Rescuer: 'Being Called a Hero is Overwhelming' | This Morning

Just over two weeks ago, 20-year-old Jimi Olubunmi-Adewole tragically lost his life while trying to rescue a woman from the River Thames. His death has been met with an outpouring of admiration, with many calling for him to be honoured for his remarkable bravery. But he wasn't alone that night. Alongside him was Joaquín García - who also put his life on the line to save a stranger. Now wracked with survivor’s guilt, Joaquin will be opening up about his memories of the terrifying evening, as well as sharing his hopes that Jimi will receive a posthumous honour.

Yes, and Jimi's best friend Bernard too- he lost his friend in the blink of an eye, and the whole situation must be equally confounding for Joaquin too- I met someone exactly four weeks to the day he passed away and I remember would a profound effect it had on me, the thought that I had met someone at the very end of their life....For Joaquin it was literally a case of he was there one minute and gone the next...must be so shocking for him to think.

This interview was carried out so respectfully, carefully and compassionately. Philip and Holly also work well together. They both have high emotional intelligence, and it shows. Especially with people describing traumatic experiences. They guide and don't dominate, and give the guest space and time to process the question and express themselves. Re-living these experiences while answering questions, very much supported and validated by Phillip and Holly, would be part of the healing process for their guests. Part of being in a safe space to express themselves in front of an audience, is that Philip and Holly don't push beyond their guests' boundaries to sensationalise. Both would be excellent counsellors, but I appreciate that they are also mindful of their audience, and the boundaries of T.V. viewing too. They do a lot of quick thinking, while also responding genuinely. I have seen many interviewers from many different countries, and I believe Philip and Holly are the best. Parkinson and Oprah don't deserve nearly much praise as Phillip and Holly as interviewers, in my opinion! Phillip and Holly are articulate and focused on so much more than celebrity life! They are about sharing human experiences; some we can relate to, and others we can't at all. For guests and viewers alike, they provide a sense of security with their expertise. They also provide education, especially about understanding and including differences, for their audiences. They teach by role modelling fantastic communication skills and compassion. These skills are useful in all our relationships. The fact that nearly all the comments here are about the guest, and the incident, and further discussions around this topic, is a testament to Philip and Holly not dominating or impossing themselves into the discussion. Unlike most interviewers, they don't have to be at the center of attention. Instead they support and highlight the narrative, and the guest. I had confidence that Philip and Holly would be respectful and sensitive, but this interview exceeded my expectations, it was so well done! I am sure Phillip and Holly have done terrible interviews, at some time, but I haven't seen one yet!

They are true heroes. People can only imagine, but I myself have a hero that saved me from drowning. The cold water took my ability to breathe away. I was completely dependent on him for my life. Being in that situation is very difficult to come to terms with alone. Loosing Jimmy is at it’s least heart breaking. I’m beyond happy and grateful to the community for recognizing these hero’s. Jimmy’s life is the highest tribute to the meaning of life and spiritual condition. Looking at him, one can see his light and forever grieve his sacrifice.
