Kevin stop telling me that they are on a tight budget and they are saving money on stuff like keeping the plaster or helping with labor. Lets not forget they got custom hand rails, tiles, molding run on the outside of their house, heated garage floor, all the prep for the wood burning stove and a second floor suite over the garage. In comparison, new drywall would be dirt cheap

I used to do sheetrock for a living years ago. You don't always need strapping behind a patch, you can do what is called a hot patch by peeling the gypsum from the back of the patch to form a border of just paper and use sheetrock mud to secure the patch to the wall, and then finish as usual.

While using drywall and tape to patch is trickier to do, it’s a better idea. Paper tape is 0.0085” thick while these self-adhering mesh panels are 0.017” thick. Unless you drift your mud out quite a ways you will see a noticeable bump in your wall.
@howtodoitdude16624 жыл бұрын
A blow patch is easier, faster and less noticeable. I’m surprised they never show that option.

I'm curious, when installing the beadboard on the porch ceiling, why are they working from the outside in by nailing the ends and then in the middle and not work from one end to the other? Aren't they running the risk of causing a "bubble" by trapping bend, warp, or other imperfections in the boards?

When they were gluing on those end mitres I couldn’t believe they did it free hand holding it up in the air. First, do it on a bench or other flat worktop. Second, use a carpenter’s square on the OUTSIDE to ensure you have it all square as you glue it. Remove the square after 10s I’ve done this thousands of times. The above works. 👍

Drywall/plaster guy should have used hot mud that dries in 10 minutes...now he's got to flare that compound out to hide the mesh tape. It's unnecessary to use the tape in my opinion. When they skim coat drywall compound for a Level 5 you're using another layer of compound and that layer doesn't crack so why waste your time using 4 slices of thick tape? The hot mud will dry hard as plaster as it's calcium sulfate, the same chemical composition as plaster, basically...Those dinky repair patches aren't going to crack even if the house is hit by an earthquake

These wall patch vids would be closer to reality if they showed where most of time goes - sanding and clean up from sanding. Try putting that jingle music against that. That two minutes of applying compound across one foot is misleading for the diy guy. Sanding can be avoiding by tapering the compound far wider, but theyre not doing that here.
