This Old House

3 жыл бұрын

The gambrel roof profiles are pre-assembled and raised. Then the crew stands up the second floor walls. Three new apprentices arrive as part of the Gen Next program. Tommy shows them how to measure and cut roof rafters. Richard works with an engineer who is designing a septic system for the project.
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse.
With the gables installed on both sides of the addition, Kevin O'Connor finds Tom Silva and Jeff Sweenor building and raising the narrow gambrel roof profiles on either end.
The next step is to stand the two second floor dormer walls on the long sides of the house. With the windows framed out, Tom and Kevin throw in with Jeff and his crew to finish sheathing before they raise the walls. As part of the Generation Next initiative, each season apprentices are invited to join the building team so they can learn on the job. Kevin introduces the three newest apprentices, Kathryn Fulton, Ryan Dolan, and De'Shaun Burnett. Each come to the jobsite with a different background story and are ready to dive in with the crew.
The original house had the most basic of waste water systems, a cesspool. The new construction means the homeowners must upgrade their system. Richard Trethewey meets with engineer Jeff Balch to find out the modern plan for waste water--including a biological system that significantly reduces the amount of nitrogen that's released to a leaching field.
Meanwhile, heavy lifting continues as Jeff's team wraps up framing the second story and attic of the house. Kevin assists Jeff with installing the LVL ridge. Tom shows the three new apprentices how to measure and cut the roof rafters while the rest of the crew starts to install them.

I think the learning is the best part about the job. That and the fact that you have no disconnect between the work and the paycheck. This structure went up. My sweat put this in place to shelter a family. The pay is like icing on a cake because the work itself is so rewarding.

The saw man on my first pro gig swinging a hammer was a West Virginian who'd been a carpenter since shortly after God created wood. This was a historical restoration of an 1885 Victorian owned by a professor of architecture at Georgia Tech. His knowledge and teaching technique gave me so much learning that folks who didn't know better were calling me a master carpenter long before I'd earned the title.

So we just had our pre built staircases delivered and I'm a bit disheartened by the construction. We weren't planning on ever staining stringers, and they appear to be plywood. The entire staircase is stapled together and there are protective boards stapled to the center of our hickory treads. We've never had pre built staircases installed before and we don't really know what to expect.

Better have lots of money laying around if you want a festool brand of anything. Great tools, but they're about 3 times as expensive as the typical tool of the trade. Kreg makes an adapter/track that fits most circular saws for about a small fraction of the cost of a true track saw. Works great too

Very poor quality builds on the wall tie downs. I saw none. I have seen this poor quality many times on this Old House. New England must not any rules. In Florida most counties building like this they would put you in jail or stop you from building. You could not even buy House Insurance with this build. The insurance require inspections to avoid homes built with such terrible builds.
