Build it out of redwood or cedar instead of treated pine. Treated pine dries out, splits and warps within the first year or two and all of your work looks like garbage in a short time, even after painting. More investment up front for a product that looks good MUCH longer.

Why would you spend that much time on the decorative knob on the top? You can easily pick up a pre-made finneal that has more detail and simply screws on to the top. I'm all for making things yourself where you can, but not when it takes up significantly more time and doesn't look as good.

I love the forced perspective effect of this project, but other than that, what a useless endeavor. I guess it's not useless for everyone, but I need to know how to fix and build functional stuff, not glitz.
