In the master suite, it's almost time to tile the bathroom. Foam board is put on the walls and floor to receive the tiles with thinset. Tommy shows Kevin how he builds a shower bench made out of the same 2-inch and thinner foam board. Then they run electric radiant wire to heat the seat.
Our plumbing crew is installing new gas lines. Richard shows the plumbing apprentices the old-school way of cutting and connecting the steel pipes. Then he shows them how to use the latest clamping tool for a quick and safe connection.
The newly opened up crawl space gets sprayed with insulation.
On the first floor, Kevin finds Tommy teaching the apprentices how to install double hung replacement windows. Clad on the outside for no maintenance and primed on the inside for paint, these energy-efficient windows require a sponge balancing system to stay in place.
On the exterior, the architect calls for the second-floor shingles to flare at the transition where they meet the clapboards. Tommy shows Kevin and homeowner Joe how he makes a jig to achieve the flare.

I stayed in a house during winter that had the heated shower floor. Gotta say, it was nice...feet didn't get cold like they do normally. During the cold winter months, I would place a washrag over the drain to allow a couple of inches of warm water to develop to keep my feet warm. So I get this idea.

I guess it's like underfloor heating. I mean, you could wear socks to keep your feet warm, but the underfloor heating is so much more convenient and nice.

It was only an extra $25 in materials to extend the heated floor to my shower floor. Keep in mind the heated floor also helps heat the ROOM.

Underfloor heating dries floor much faster which also reduces water damages for structures assuming waterproofing and everything else is done correctly.

They don’t allow o-ring joints in the UK for gas. Solder or compression. And no plastic either. Just a quick update: I watched one of those “Property Brothers” once and they said a copper gas pipe running under a suspended floor was illegal because “someone would think it was a water pipe” and it had to be changed to a plastic pipe. I realise that gas pipes are now mostly plastic for the gas company distribution (we’ve just spent 12months having our road dug up so they could replace the metal main pipes in the road to yellow plastic). But to change a copper pipe in a house because “someone might think it was water and so cut in to it” did make me laugh

HI, 4 month ago I bought a house that has the similar windows system "Sponge Balancing rails". I would like to know if their are easy to remove from the clips. I need to replace some of them that have the mechanism bad (doesn't hold the window up) and other windows require a bottom replacement (The Sill) and I need to remove the rail also. Thanks for your help.

Heated shower floor is great to dry things, like shoes or various canvas items like hats etc after washing them properly and placing in the templates to keep their shape. And it is a nice thing to step in warm shower room at the winter time when the very slight temperature difference doesn't exist.

I think it's a nice idea but I would do it with typical radiant floor, meaning hot water, instead of electrical.

@@fadetounforgiven Electronic can be placed anywhere easily. Even nicely poured in a mud. But problem is that if you damage the wire in it, it is broken. So you take a risk while installing it that does it work after curing. But afterwards it takes very little electricity to heat quickly up, and no requirement to have extra water piping to leak. But if one has a central water heating, then it makes sense to run that floor heating through it as well.

@@paristo call me crazy but I'm not a big fan of using electricity where water could one day leak. Also, the piping for this would be quite easy, there would only be leaks if you are really uncareful when installing the pex or whatever it is. As to life expectancy, I think the resistence is probably shorter than the pipe most likely. I think water is a better option than electricity here.

Why heat a shower floor?

To keep floor much drier which reduces change to structural failures also really warm to feet. And with underfloor heating you don't need any other heat source, no radiators on wall etc.

Love the program. A side effect of your program is that I know more about replacing electrical panels in the US than I do in the UK, where the codes are completely different (e.g. wire nuts not allowed, single phase 240V), black or blue is Neutral, not "hot". The use of those nuclear-bomb-proof steel gas pipes is strange to me. I live in the UK, and the house gas piping is copper inch OD. Is there any reason, apart from inertia, to continue with steel?

PEX and PE gas lines can be used in the USA (when local codes allow it). Is there any reason, apart from inertia, to continue to use soft more dangerous, expensive and more time consuming, copper instead in the UK? Also UK banned dangerous ceramic wire nuts years ago... Is there any reason, apart from inertia, to continue not to allow modern wire nuts?

The dense foam they are using is actually very strong in compression, take a look at SIPS structurally insulated panels

I've used kerdi board dozens of times. That stuff is seriously amazing and incredibly strong. There is no limit to what you can do with it. I've even used it to make a floating sink.

There are XPS foam boards that is stronger than basic concrete so i assume that you haven't ever seen that stuff.

We’ve been using this method in Europe for a long time and it’s so much easier and safer because is the same equal force 5t on a machine, instead of someone tightening it with a wrench, google ‘bonfix press’.

Tommy a question couple buy’s say 110 year old house. They have a lot of work ahead of them. They are currently working on stairs from first fl to second fl. The stairwell from the second fl to the first floor has bannister protecting folks from falling in the hole down to the first floor. They are thinking of replacing the current railing with a glass surround to protect the hole. The current or original railing Was encapsulated in plywood when they removed the plywood they discovered spindles under the plywood. My question is do they or are they responsible to make the old banister and spindles safe. I can’t give you exact measurements however looking at the spindles they look far enough apart that a crawling infant could fit thru and fall to the first floor. The last issue is the height of the banister once again I’m not there so I can only say what I think based on what I see. The man removing the encapsulating plywood is will say 5 feet 9 inches. We can see him standing next to the banister and the top of the banister hardly reaches his crotch. My question is are they allowed to leave the current structure because it is grandfathered in or are they required by code to bring it up to todays standards.

I have a theory that when plumbers & bathroom designers create a darling little cubbyhole in the wall of a shower stall for a couple bottles of shampoo have never actually lived with a human woman, and her dozen or so bottles of shampoos, conditioners, soaps, and various lotions and emollients that will invariably liter the floor and corners of the shower stall or cover the top of that wonderful heated bench. Don't get me started on the equally elaborate collection of washcloths, scrubbies, sponges., etc. that all need a hook or hanger never planned for. And who wants a heated bench seat that has no secondary showerhead above it? These shower stalls are not realistic as to the way people actually live.

I do because I’m handicapped from a massive foot injury and can’t stand while showering. It’s a bummer but I just clean up the bench after and I do stand for short periods. I think old people use benches too.

It's a very strong, dense foam designed for this purpose. I've walked around a shower being constructed from this stuff and was surprised how solid it felt. The contrast between what you see and how it feels is surprising.

Just love how as they teach people how to waste their money by cutting corners all the time. That shower and those windows won’t last even 5 years. Foam is only supposed to be used as insulation. Where the caulking to keep the water out.
