Realizing everybody has there own ways putting seals in.Both seals can actually be pressed in with a vise no beating of the seals.Your method for removing seals on this style of lower unit is the exact way I do it too it is the fastest. When Installing both seals I even sometimes beat them in but most times I press them in gently with the vise and fitting socket no bashing of the hammers,LOLL . You've got a vise right there; MUCH better to use it to press the new seals in a controlled, squared-off way than to beat things with a hammer.

Also you didnt mention the FWD gear bearing in the back of the cluster that has a small pin in the housing that has to be lined up also when setting the cluster in place.I cant tell you how many lower units I have taken apart thru the years and found the pinned crushed down flush to the surface.I think it was a little bit of overkill as I dont think the whole FWD gear assembly would spin on the prop shaft but I guess OMC engineers thought otherwise. So they installed the lockpin to align it and prevent the FWD gear from spinning with the bearing.Just a note ...Glenn from N.Y..

@@Angler233 Hi Ron I just did one on my 1959 10HP Johnson tried a new way it failed and I broke a tiny tap in the hole.Luckily I could drive everything down more and put another pin in on top that I made.Best method and safest is to drill out the old one slightly undersize then drill again to full size and knock in a new pin use a caliper for correct drill sizes . Also use good drill bits and it drills easy and use slow speed and slight pressure dont break a drill they are tiny dont take much.You can turn the drill by hand to stay on center initially to start.I think the diameter if I remember correctly was .1375 and put a new one in buy it if you have to.I made a pin from a recoil Cir -clip I had it was the same dimension as the pin and pressed it in just enough to hold the bearing put.Ill never try to tap it and pull it out again. @@Angler233 Hello Ron, If I can I like to fix things that should be there most times in reason. In this case technically it might have been a little overkill to have that pin & the engineers did it as a precaution.I dont know if there have been any cases of the FWD gear bearing spinning in the housing I doubt it.I think in a crunch I would degrease the area real well and and use permatex or something just on the outer surface of the bearing and put it together let it set for a fewdays and then add the oil. Thats if you didnt want to tackle that pesty pin removal job....Glenn

OK love your videos I especially like your work ethic, I have a ? my 6 HP evinrude 6R75R has oil coming out from the small hole from I think the exhaust housing its drips onto the prop its quite a lot of oil can you tell my why and what I have to repair please thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us. Warm regards Karlene just had a thought that small rubber o,ring you replaced could that be the culprit.

Usually that is from unburnt fuel in the exhaust housing. If I am understanding you correctly, that’s typically not an issue

Thanks for another great video. I just finished this process on my '64 9.5 and now there's what looks like fuel(??) leaking out of a small pinhole thats directly above the prop on the underside of the cavitation plate. Any guess as to what could cause that, and should there even be a hole there?? Did I maybe break a seal when I was trying to slide the driveshaft back up into the power head? Any help at all would be much appreciated! Thanks again for the awesome videos

I am pretty sure that’s just Unburnt fuel from your exhaust. There are no seals immediately near the cavitation plate. Have you ran the motor in water yet or just soaked the Lower Unit in water to see if the reseal job worked? If there is no water in your gearcase after you have run it on your boat then I’m fairly confident that’s just unburnt fuel coming from a weep hole

Ya I ran it in a bucket and saw a sheen on the water. Wasn't sure if it was from that fuel leak or the gear case but I just took off the prop and it looks like my reseal job did not work...The prop shaft seal looks to be leaking gear oil. Are those two seals that you seat with a deep well socket directional? Meaning they only work when facing one way? Thanks for the quick reply!

That sucks. Yes they only work one way. The metal side should be facing out. Two cycles will always produce a sheen on the water

Hmmm... I mean there was definitely some metal on the side facing out because I was able to pound it in with a socket. Maybe its residual oil from me spilling some when I refilled it?? Ill try to clean it up real well and give her another go.Thanks again man you've been a huge help!

I have been having trouble with my gear oil leaking up from the drive shaft seal or somewhere else in that area in to the that water pump and not just a little leak like the oil mixed half water half oil I even replaced the seal and still have problems with this if you have any ideas for a fix please help thanks

Did you replace the shift rod rubber o-ring that sits in the brass bushing? That could easily cause that just as much as a bad driveshaft seal

Weeds Free As A Tree I once had a warped base plate, the one that holds the driveshaft seal below the water pump, that couldn’t make a good seal with the Lower Unit casing and would let water into the Lower Unit. Other than a bad deal somewhere that’s the only place I know water could get in.

Also if the seals were installed backwards that could cause water intrusion. It’s hard to say what exactly is the problem without seeing it

When I was putting gear oil in I found a ball bearing about 1/4" diameter. I know I have to pull the whole thing apart and see what it is, but I didn't see any bearings like that in your video. Please advise what it might be.

Could be from the shift dog? Can't say for sure. But my 73 18hp fastwin has 2 ball bearings with a spring between them in the shift dog where all the gears are.
