A couple of corrections having just removed the leg off my 6 HP Evinrude. The 4 bolts are 3/8 AF not 10mm and the gear lever needs to be placed in reverse not forward,

Thank you for confirming I am not crazy! Just going through this right now and was not understanding how you get the gap without going into reverse. And yes 3/8!! Or you may strip them out

Thanks for these videos. I used this 3 part series to replace the impeller on a 6hp Johnson. I have a question, not being familiar with these motors... When I first start it, should water come out the peehole right away, or does it have to warm up first? I saw your video on the thermostat, so it got me thinking about it. The guy I bought it from said it needed a new impeller, but the old one looked just fine to me.

It should come out of the pee hole within 5 seconds. Make sure, if you are running it in a barrel, you have the water level high enough for the impeller to pick up water

I just pulled my lower unit off and found that roll pin sheered off clean, and the impeller was completely destroyed. Don't know if one has anything to do with the other, but that's what I found. Question is what could have happened to the spring that the pin compresses? Anything? I'm working on a 67 6hp, and I've spent a bunch of money on already. I really don't want to get into taking the power head off.

Impellers get destroyed when they dry rot from not changing them every couple of years. As far as the spring goes, is this a saltwater motor? If could’ve corroded or just failed from being “rode hard and put it wet” How much do you have in the motor?

How do you get the pin out of the middle of the pinion gear "OMC New OEM Recoil Pinion Gear, Outboard Motor, 0318447" it an 8.0 hp johnson motor model number of motor j8rcud. Thank you either way

All the vids I've seen show the lower unit being relatively straightforward to remove, I've removed mine three times in the past week (first time to discover impeller wrong way round!) and each time it's been a bitch! It just wont drop low enough to get the pinch bolt undone unless I hit it with a hammer or get a tyre iron in the 1/4 inch gap and apply considerable pressure!! What is stopping it from dropping to get the gap wide enough to get a wrench or large screwdriver in?

my 1969 9.5HP hit something hard in water, no oil leaking anywhere, but when I checked the gear oil, it was very milky white, could not find any cracks on lower unit or oil leaking from anywhere, and I had checked oil after every use and was very clean prior to hititng bottom, pretty sure it was an oyster bed. Any ideas how water got in? I did remove lower unit with these very helpful videos, but it was wet on top of impeller housing with what looked like oil, could water have entered thru the top area of impeller???

A seal could’ve flexed or you have place up top you can’t see that’s letting water in. I would suspect the clam shell foot to produce a leak the easiest. You may have to wait a while to see it leak

Very helpful man! Have a E6RCOB that I bought used. Recently serviced lower unit but heard grinding while underway on our first trip out. Shut it down to prevent anything further from damage. Pulled the drain and vacuum plugs. Very little fluid drained. It was dark colored but viscosity was more like water than a gear oil. Only 3 bolts on the gear case but it will not separate from the mid-section. Saw your recommendations on lubing the driveshaft. The shift lever is forward but will not move at all even after pulling on the start cord. I suspect there’s something binding inside the case. Any ideas?

thisoldoutboard, so far, no. I’ve got it soaking in PB to see if it will come free. There’s a small amount of play in it but barely enough to get a flathead in the gap.

When I removed the 4 bolts from the lower unit, it didn't drop far enough to even get a screw driver in the gap. I had it in forward gear like you said, but it was still only dropping a tad. I didn't want to force it either, any suggestions?

Try jiggliing the flywheel while lowering it. Sometimes the driveshaft can get seated too well in the power head. Make sure when you get it out you put a little grease on the end of the driveshaft when you reinstall it to alleviate this issue next time.

Hi i have a 1978 Evinrude 6hp 6804B... It starts great and idles well, but it seems not enough water is coming out of the telltail (pee hole)... I have tried a wire down the tube to see if a clog is just right there and not really anything . It feels more hot than i think it should after a min of running. What is your opinion if i may ask? Would a good seafoam flush help or am i SOL : (

Is there no water coming out or just a little water? Did you make sure the copper water tube seared into the impeller housing really well? Was the rubber grommet worn out?

Try a hand impact screw driver - something like this amzn.to/2DbwDob Other than that, you could use “light” heat. The casing metal can be brittle so using heat would be a last ditch effort

Hey I just use standard 80/90 gear oil. Regarding how much, there is a “fill level port” in the mid section of the Lower Unit. Fill the Lower Unit using the port on the sketch until fluid come out the top “fill level port”. That’s how you know you are full.

Actually make sure you use Hydro oil that is specifically made for outboards , heavy weight gear oil that also has rust inhibitors to keep any water contamination from corroding any interior gears and the inside the casing , regular gear oil does not have same inhibitors

Why do you have All in the lower unit? All is a laundry detergent. I use oil in the lower unit.

Hey Chasey. Is the overall condition of the outboard good? The reason I say that is if it hasn’t run in a while the driveshaft could’ve rusted to the crankshaft. If the Lower Unit will slide down enough to expose the driveshaft you may be able to turn the motor upside down and spray some PB blaster on the drive shaft and let it side down the shaft and work on the rust.

There are NO 10 MM bolts on this, a 10 MM FITS on it
