Hi I am doing my first hunter show soon, I am wondering how do I do a lead change in the canter without changing the gate?

Great question. This would be something you practice and train during your "off season". Most horses will, when balaned, do a lead change. The key is to keep them balanced. 😀 The next best thing is to get the front lead, which most horses do, then "skip" the back. That is bring the horse back for 1 trot step, enough for them to "skip" the hind leg into a change. If you are going to a championship show, or a rated show, skipping the changes will be noticed and marked accordingly.

Thank you this was very helpful, I have been raising my stirrups up for jumping and that has helped a lot. I also have been trying to be more patient before the jump and less stiff with a looser rein over the fence. And less griping with the knee is something I need to remember when I ride. I usually braid by horse and use a hunter pad, this was a schooling show for high school riders. Again thank you so much It is very helpful to know these insightful comments!!! - Elleanor p.s. I am going to check out some of your books!

NICE! Thank you so much. Your comments are very kind. having the proper stirrup length for jumping is important. How did you "be more patient" before the jumps. That is a really tough one to understand. What did you do to become more patient? Braiding is good and it shows off your horse nicely. Yay... tell us which book you like the most! look up the Equestrian Skill builders group on facebook. ~Laura

Opinion on sitting the canter? A full seat instead of keeping yourself out of the saddle the whole time. That’s what I was taught.

Thanks for your comment. I think it depends on your horse and your situation. If you and your horse are comfortable staying in 2-point and you can keep your horse balanced that is great. If you need to sit up and balance your horse as you go throughout your course, then you should sit up and organize yourself.

I would totally love to be a part of a live video. My schedule is much more flexible than most though. I suspect late afternoon on a Saturday would be good for most people.

And what if you don’t have a dead broke horse that will stay the same pace no matter what?? Like most people may ride the average dead head horse but I don’t. My mare has to be held tight so that she stays slow in our landing.

If you don't have a steady fhythm or steady pace then you are doing the correct thing by steadying her on your landing. Rhythm is very important to the development of your horse. An average jumper with a steady rhythm can often place in a class. depending on the class.

In our HJ Association (GSDHJA) we're told that we can't braid except for the Champ Show, when we must braid. Is that not the case elsewhere?

This is interesting. Never heard of this that not braiding is mandatory...
