That's the clearest explanation of checks for polarity and output of the regulator and dynamo, and their fixes, I've ever seen. Thanks.

I don't own a British car, I just enjoy Steve's videos. He's a great teacher. When the light when off I cheered like he scored a goal. He was calm. I guess he's used to winning. :)

I owned a 62 Sprite just like that when I was 18 years old ... same colour, same wheels but mine still had stock hubcaps ... I beleive it was 1175 cc ... I did the Valves, King Pins and Brakes and put in a Roll Bar all myself ... back in 1974 I paid $400.00 for it ... had a blast in it for a while then bought something else bigger .. nice to see it again ...

Great video. When I was in High School, I had a Fiat 850 Spyder, like your Dad's, and a friend had an MG Midget, similar to your Sprite. The cars seemed fairly evenly matched and we raced each other several times. It is great that you can bring these cars back to life. Keep up the good work.

Steve, I subscribed to your channel long ago, and I don't think I have commented a single time yet. I will guess that if I had one of these cars, and had these vids as a teaching point, I think I could actually DO the work you do. Thanks so much for a much needed distraction to my life. I am always so happy to see a new vid from you. You make a difference in my little existence here my friend. Greetings from Northern BC!

Looking forward to the bypass hose replacement, i only had one a series with that hose and i found dropping the hose into hot water made compressing it a lot easier to fit even then its fiddly
@davethornewell74173 жыл бұрын
The bypass hose is not a genuine one, the factory supplied one is a straight hose, and requires the removal of either the cylinder head or the water pump to fit, the convoluted one can be fitted in situ but doesn't last as long
@eggy19623 жыл бұрын
@@davethornewell7417 its standard to fit a proper hose...when as you said head or water pump removed but if neither require it the compress ones do the job.

Ah, memories from 50 years ago! Actually, not so long ago as I still have a vehicle with 7" sealed beam headlights - so much easier and cheaper to replace than today's over-priced plastic crap. And you can still see the indicators when the headlights are on, unlike most multifuctional units.
@TheEulerID3 жыл бұрын
They were, although the light from sealed beam units was always rather yellow and weak. I used to replace them with 7" reflector units that took a halogen bulb and put a relay in the circuit too with a more direct feed from the battery via an in-line fuse and thicker wire.
@robt21513 жыл бұрын
@@TheEulerID The clue is in your comment - you had the option to replace them. I bought a set of (then high tech) quad-optics and moved them from car to car for about 20 years before they finally failed due to rust incursion. That choice is denied to those with more modern cars.

That wee trick with grease on your finger is a great tip. I think you've mentioned it once before because, when you were fiddling with the hardware, I knew what was coming.👍👌😁 That method has so many possible applications (not just with cars) , it's well worth remembering.

This is a "Total Flashback " event for me. My 63 Sprite 1098 was Old English White with the red interior. I had it from 1980 till 1995. Never saw any of the factory chalk markers. Great to see you work thru the electrics! That all happened to me too!!🇬🇧🎩🇬🇧

Even though I will never do any of this I find your descriptions straightforward and interesting. I still need to know how you earn money out of this! I was in a Sprite in the 60’s when my friend with thick glasses put us both onto the other side of the road when a car turned right in front of us. He failed to see the miserable little turn indicator light flashing

Steve I love your straightforward videos! Just a note on Lucas voltage regulators. I use a strip of very fine emery cloth to clean the points. I never touch the adjustment screw unless I really, really have to. A tiny, tiny change there makes a huge difference to the way the VR works. Mike
@ThisWeekWithCars3 жыл бұрын
Even when you buy a new regulator you must adjust that screw it will not work completely correctly out of the box.
@johnpearson4923 жыл бұрын
I've adjusted my original one a couple times. It's not too scary to do. Just use a good multi meter and read the voltage while adjusting the correct screw.

Those also had Lucas electrics.
@TheEulerID3 жыл бұрын
Those were called "sealed beam units" in the UK, and they produce a rather poor light. Back in the day it used to be possible to buy 7" round reflector units which took halogen bulbs. I've no idea if they are still available, but if driving at night they are much preferable as they produce about twice the light for the same wattage. It's also a good idea to put a relay in the circuit (even without a halogen conversion).

I have a question for you, I just bought a 1974 MG Midget and it has been sitting since 1977. It has some kind of electrical issues where the ignition light will come on very dimly, but when I turn anything else on the electrics die. Do you know how I can solve this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
