Two improvements: First, put a piece of cheesecloth over the top of the beaker. This will cut down on dust getting into the solution, and will minimize the number of unwanted crystals growing in the experiment. Second, once you have a medium-size crystal, make a new batch of solution using only the non-chrome version of the sulphate. Transfer the crystal to the clear solution, and you will grow a clear crystal with a purple heart.
@JenniferHughesCOB6 жыл бұрын

You mean you don't have access to uranium? Maybe I'm special but I have lots of uranium. I even have gold and other precious elements like platinum. I keep it in my muscles, teeth, bones, and the rest of my body. If you were to extract and concentrate these trace elements, every person is carrying around a few gold nuggets and uranium nuggets worth on them. But if you are so deprived, go smoke a cigarette. The tobacco plant absorbs many metals from the soil, that get released when combusted, and absorbed by a smokers body. Lead, mercury, you name it.

+chí bách trần Think not, potassium permanganate can decompose in the solution, forming brown precipitate of manganese dioxide.
@nickturner57219 жыл бұрын
+chí bách trần There's also the fact that permanganate should be able to oxidise the chromium in the salt, probably to dichromate, forming the brown precipitate as well. I would like to see a crystal sword. The real question is how big can these things be grown? Once it's large enough I'm sure it could be (professionally) molded to whatever shape you desire.
@alexgoldsmith85988 жыл бұрын
uhuju1 Crystals of salts (ionic compounds) are generally very brittle so you would have trouble shaping them also the growth cant be molded because the structure of the molecules is very specific and will only form one shape after a certain amount of growth.
@ChaosBW8 жыл бұрын
The answer to all your questions is no. They grow in square forms only.

John Armstrong you can use a long hair too. Or nylon -almost invisible.
@medexamtoolscom6 жыл бұрын
I guess to make it perfectly, you'd have to do it in 0 gravity, so that you wouldn't need to suspend it from a string, but it wouldn't sink to the bottom if there was a crystal in the middle.

wondering if you can drill a hole in it, stick an LED light in there, make a nice stand, and use it as a night light.
@evansandthistle53568 жыл бұрын
The crystal shown in the video? no. A much larger crystal? yes. What you would do is drill into it from the bottom then get some LED lights and put them inside. DIY nightlight?

@blackrain21078 жыл бұрын
derek xiao You could, but you would have to protect the inside because it would melt
@derekxiaoEvanescentBliss8 жыл бұрын
Black Rain ionic crystals have insanely high melting points, if anything, I'm more concerned about the led crying the crystal out over time, causing it to crumble from the inside...
@kenskaterskater30707 жыл бұрын
derek xiao well you dont have to drill it ...just use a clump of clay and a pen light or lazer pointer, make sure button is on bottom so you can still turn it on and off, but recessed so it can sit on the table. And press one point of Crystal in the top , not too deep. And night light.

This is SO COOL! Is there anything else that I could coat these with that doesn't give the streaky effect of nail polish? Like would a spray sealant work?

@chinadollsyndrome8 жыл бұрын
If you want to go really low-tech and low-cost, I've had success with just pouring a bottle of polish into one of those spray bottles you can pick up for $1, then adding a bit of polish remover to thin it. Shake it up to mix well and you have some instant polish spray paint that will give you a smooth finish.
@bibzybean8 жыл бұрын
Oh cheers! :)
@marshmallowmountains46368 жыл бұрын
I know you've already gotten answers but heh I want to add another possible option. I'm not sure how it would affect the crystals, but you could also try to use sculpey glaze and coat it in a few layers. If you coat it evenly, it will be nice and smooth.

Anyone try drilling with a tiny diamond point bit? If not that, maybe try wrapping some thin jewelry wire around the fishing line and loop it at where you expect the top of your crystal to be, and let it grow around it.

I was thinking the exact same thing. You could use a colored nail polish first to label each side before the clear polish, but you would have to make sure they are fair before using them in a game.
@rentheadangelcollins8 жыл бұрын
They probably are. Crystal growth is usually pretty well-balanced. Obviously, though, some will be malformed, so your point still stands.

If you were to hang something in the solution, like maybe a marble or small plastic figure, would crystals grow on it?
@officiallparts9138 жыл бұрын
It depends reeally, the way the crystals would grow on it would be through small holest and non-even surfaces.. So if your marble is a little rough, it would be possible.. (please note that the crystal will not continue the shape of the crystal, but take its natural form until it is obstructed by something)

Cyril Matthew unfortunately these crystals are as fragile as a chuck of table salt. you would either have to put a lot of sealant on them or start making earth based minerals like feldspars and such which require a lot of heat and pressure to make anything durable enough for selling in a shop. making quartz would be the next step after making these
