It's probably been said a bunch now but you guys gotta integrate time-lapse. Just 10-15 seconds here and there. But showing the long soak times. Fantastic chemistry channel. Quickly one of my new favourites

If you want to preserve that crystal, it's best to apply some kind of waterproofing to it. There are several options you can experiment with, but clear nail polish is a common one. Otherwise, humidity in the air will tarnish it over time.

By far the hardest part is attaching the seed crystal to the fishing line. I don’t have the fine motor control in my hands to achieve this. Quite frustrating.

I've watched a few of your videos now. I am curious to see the results if you follow your process but incorporate pressurisation. For example, when growing the crystals over time, rather than leaving the beaker out on a table, instead putting the beaker in a pressurisation chamber, like those used for removing air bubbles from resin pours. Will the higher pressure produce better looking crystals? Perhaps crystals that are more dense?

Loving this! Just started getting into it a few months ago from your written tutorial. Haven't managed to make any good clear single crystals yet - I keep getting clusters - but I'm having fun trying to figure it out! How did you get the fishing line around the crystal so easily? I'm having a ton of trouble with it. The line just slips right off the crystal, or the knot just immediately loosens and lets the crystal free! It's driving me crazy, hah.
@the_crystalverse2 ай бұрын
It's actually pretty tricky to tie the crystal. Try to get a seed crystal that's not too small (hard to snag) nor too big (will loosen the knot). If you're still having trouble, you can try the double overhand knot.

I'm having problems with growing the seed crystal in a petri dish. I either get flat big crystals that look like triangles with flatened corners or i get many, small and densely packed crystals. I'm not entirel sure what may be the problem
@the_crystalverseАй бұрын
Try pouring more solution into the petri dish. A deeper solution might help reduce the flatness. In general, it doesn't really matter how the seeds look, as long as they are transparent. When you tie them up, they will slowly transform into an octahedron as they grow.

I love this but at the same time I have a question. How do you stop the crystal from magically liquifying from air moisture? I keep trying to grow crystals but every time they somehow dissolve into a puddle no matter how much I dry them.
@the_crystalverse4 ай бұрын
How big are your crystals, and how's the humidity like at your place? I live in the tropics, and I've never had any problems with alum dissolving with moisture. If you really need to prevent this, you can keep it in an airtight container with some silica gel.
@AarontheFishCat4 ай бұрын
@@the_crystalverse I actually live in Sri Lanka which in right by the equator, humidity fluctuates alot. The crystals aren't even that big really, about 2-3mm big at max. I tried it mainly with copper salts like Sulfate or Chloride. I've always wanted to try alum but was afraid this would happen again.
@the_crystalverse4 ай бұрын
Alum should be fine, it is much less soluble in water. Also, keep the crystal in solution and grow it until 1cm+. Bigger crystals are more resistant to moisture.
