I think of my dad with this song. He was so weak and frail before he died. He was on two different painkillers before he died. He was lying their with his eyes half closed, mouth agape. He could barely breathe. He had COPD. I remember when mum came into my room and told me we need to go to the hospital because they said he "won't make it through the night". I said she was bullshitting me. She heard the nurse on the phone wrong. Then we got there and saw him emaciated and all alone in a hospital ward. I wasn't there in the preceding days. I'm his son and I wasn't there in his last days. He was so weak and helpless. I did see him a couple of days before that but only spent about an hour with him, then went fishing. I had no idea he was about to die. No one told our family he was terminal. No one told us COPD only gets worse and he was in the middle of a final "exacerbation". When I listen to this song I imagine his long thin legs and arms, his vacant express, open mouth, half closed eyes - I imagine I'm driving on a country road at night and see him as a shadowy, gigantic figure towering over the road, crossing it, slowly, very slowly, an empty man, a boy, looking for his family. We were his family. I was his son. He was related to me by blood. My mum owed him nothing. She is not related to him. I should have been there for him. I should have loved him more. That day I went fishing I would have loved to have taken him with me and let him bathe in the sun next to the water with me. If he died there, with me, it would have been better. Now he's gone and it makes me want to believe in God and heaven. It makes me want to say "I will see you in heaven dad". But with what I've seen, the rock I've seen, the weathered, rusted rock, the 700 million year old formations of rock I've seen in the Northern Territory, the 20,000 year old rock art I've seen in the Northern Territory - I know I'll never, ever see him again. He is gone and my memories are bullshit because memories change every time you remember them. That is so painful - to know that he would have only been part of 1/4 of my life. The majority of my life will be without him. When I'm 80 he would be a footnote in my chronology.
