I think on the orginal recording Pete played a hollowbody Gretsch 6120, which was his favourite guitar in the studio for many years.
@msmoniz3 жыл бұрын
Yup. Into a 59 Fender Bandmaster combo. Majority of Who's Next electric guitars was this gear combination. A SG or anything with P90s into a Marshall will sound great for this song, but it ain't gonna hit the tone of the album version considering how different the gear used is.
@slimkickens3 жыл бұрын
@@msmoniz yeah, his tone is way too thick and distorted to be the album tone. It has the sonic character, but there are subtleties that you can't get without filtertrons, a hollow body, the volume pedal, or the weird ohmage of the 3x10 bandmaster.

I have a mid '70s SG with PAFs, and plugged straight into a Fender Blues Jr. I'm still able to get as close or closer to Townshend's tone. I've been tempted to get a more "Townshend accurate" SG with P-90s but I love the one I have.

the guitars pete used to record "won't get fooled again" is well-documented... a gretsch 6120 through a fender bandmaster, both gifted from joe walsh. the tone here, though nice (for the right song), isn't really like the tone on the actual recording. it's too "AC/DC-ish" for me. i think the overdrive is more old school than that. as for pete's tone on "live at leeds", that sound is as much about the room and the ambient reverb, as it is about the guitar and amp he was using (hiwatts and an SG).
@jumpboy293 жыл бұрын
Pete townshend said in a recent interview with Sweetwater he also used a Hiwatt with a P90 sg on Won't get Fooled again...so the recorded guitar is two different rigs overdubbed. So all this time, the gretsch into a bandmaster was only half the story

This is not the studio tone ( as people said, Gretsch+Bassman) nor the live tone (SG Special - or Les Paul Deluxe - with Hiwatt amps) but that's close enough for rock'n roll as they say 😉. I recently bought a little Hiwatt T20/10 and that's much closer if you dime that clean channel.
