"Celebration" was inspired by Prince's " I wanna be your lover. " Ronald Bell was backstage at a Rick James concert and heard Prince who was supporting James singing that song. Ronald altered what he was hearing by reversing the groove and slowing down the speed and came up with the main hook for Celebration.

"Hollywood Swinging" was the first bass line I ever played, I only learned that song to play in a HS talent show (to get girls) with my friends having never played the bass before. It's very simple and it gave me the determination to play the bass.

I recently watched an interview with Chic's Nile Rodgers in which he claimed he got inspired by the beginning of Hollywood Swinging bass line when he wrote Chic's Good Times, you know, the 3 quarter notes on E. He said his cousin played with Kool and the Gang.

Julia and the Bass Face are back! I can't get over how good she is at finger style funk--I wish I'd had a handle on that near as well as she does when I was playing the bass. Good show as always, Miss Julia! Me, I always liked the groove on "Joanna" because it's so relaxed and laid back, but confident, and the fills he does on the chorus between vocal lines are just so tasteful and perfectly timed. Deceptively simple, for sure.

You did great job Julia. But as you know, making groove simple bass lines is a very hard job. Most of the Kool & The Gang bass lines are not hard to play but very hard to make groove. That's the reason why Robert Kool Bell is a very great bass player with a so terrific groove and sound in his fingers !

Kool Bell had some very nice lines and is the pantheon of funk bassist from the 70's and 80's. You gotta cover Kool & The Gang's "Too Hot" as well. Another bassist from this era that does not get enough attention is Mark Adams from the band Slave. Please cover this guy as well. He was funky, soulful, and inventive.
