I saw Bootsy last weekend in Cincinnati backstage at the Black Music Walk of Fame Inductees Grand Openning July 22, 2023. James Brown's Daughter brought Bootsy and his wife Pat to the stage as she accepted her father's inductee award. LA Reid of The Deele also gave Bootsy and Midnight Star their props for paving the way and giving The Deele their start to stardom. It was an awesome even and the Ohio Players put on a show that closed the event. Cincinnati loves Bootsy Collins and all its contributors to the music History. If you are ever in Cincinnati Ohio you have check out The Black Music Walk of Fame. By the way this young lady is "Cold Blooded" on the "Funky Bass"!!!

Where I used to live in Dayton you couldn't walk 10 feet with out meeting someone from Lakeside, Slave, The Ohio Players or any of the other million bands from around here. You can still yell out "a one two three" and the horns will come in in most parts of the city. What this world needs now is some more ridiculously huge vibrant Funk Bands. Please.

Julia is feelin the funk. Awesome. I'm a metalhead that loves funk,especially James Brown. I mostly played thrash or death metal for years and didnt want to play anything else. When I approached funk as a bass player I thought I'd just have some fun and learn some licks. I didnt realise then how much I would learn and eventually have a totally different approach to the bass. Playing technical metal is great and challenging,but funk really taught me how to step into the traditioal role as part of the rhythm section. Instead of playing at warp speed with the guitars you have a much larger role. Instead of complimenting the guitars you are often the driving force of the song. This concept wasnt new to me butI didnt have any clue about musical space or sitiing in the pocket(or even what the pocket was). I had to realise that less is more and stop myself from trying to fill all musical space with notes. There are situations where the best thing for the song is thumping on roots and fifths and being part of that rhythm section.

The James Brown & Bootsy Collins Tales From the Tour Bus season was so awesome. It tells the tale of how JB taught Bootsy of the concept of 'the 1', as you mentioned. After the band departed from JB, Bootsy took the knowledge and concept of 'the 1' and passed it onto to George Clinton. I just love how the knowledge was passed down from one iconic great to another by way of the great Bootsy Collins, an icon in his own right.

Gr8 stuff Julia .. Nice moves lol .. When I was young guitar player Like bootsie I had to swap to Bass as my older Brother was Singer & guitar player . I found in a Library ' sale of damaged books' a copy of How to be A Bass Player by Bootsie Collins .. Some one had stolen the Music pages & left the Pictures & the words of advice from Bootsie .. There were three main rules (?) a ) Practice is for the Bedroom Not the Stage . Never try to play something new until you are 100% sure you can do it . b ) if you do make a mistake smile & play it again with confidence like you meant to do it . c ) Never let the Band down .. They are counting on you to hit that ONE . .. He also advised the importance of always dressing & acting like a confident person no matter how nervous you are act cool . Don't talk to much . & Practice all the time .. Practice in front of a mirror as if there was an audience .. By the way I think you got it right .. the slide up into the ONE etc little grace notes & spaces just B4 the ONE .. I have always remembered these tips . Love you all at Thomann Peace & a happy summer to come that's what I wish for you all . Bye

So I was born and raised in Cincinnati, Bootsy's hometown. And if you go to enough shows around here, you just see him around. I have two Bootsy stories. When I was in high school, I saw Public Enemy. Randomly in the middle of the show, Flav yells "Yo Bootsy get out here." Bootsy walks on stage, picks up a guitar and Flav gets on the drums and they jammed for a few minutes. A few years later, I saw Freekbass live. Before the show started, me and my friend saw Bootsy walk in the venue surrounded by a bunch of photographers. You can see him coming from a mile away because he is super super tall. Anyway, he started coming directly toward me and my friend. He was being super cool saying hi to everyone shaking hands. He comes up to me and my friend, stops and looks down at us. Right at this moment a photographer got literally right in front of my face! Bootsy shakes my friends hand, and my friend says "Hey what's up man." I peek around the photographer and look at Bootsy. He looks down at me for a second confused and then just keeps walking. 😂 Anyway, he's definitely a musical hero. P-Funk for life.

I read somewhere that Bootsy played drums on "Not Just Kneedeep" by Funkadelic from the album "Uncle Jam Wants You." Several people are given credit for playing drums on this album, including the incredible Dennis Chambers, so it's easy to imagine that their studio sessions were in some ways loose and relaxed as to who plays what. Anyway, even though Bootsy is not primarily a drummer, it just so happens to be my favorite work of his.
@Odawg963 жыл бұрын
Bootsy did in fact play drums on “ Knee Deep.” The general public doesn’t know him as a drummer, but ol’ skool funkateers know he’s a a triple-threat on bass, guitar, and drums. He played drums on all the early Rubber Band albums, and he’s also the drummer on Funkadelic’s title cut from ONE NATION UNDER A GROOVE.
