I just found your videos. They are very helpful. I started painting with too many colors and then learned how to mix. I like the color choices you have and the way you made your color charts. I haven't settled on what primary colors I like best so I will wait until I narrow down before I make my charts. Thank you for your wonderful information and knowledge.

Hello Eddie. Sorry you can't view Part 3 of the Color Chart video. There is a KZbin problem with Part 3. Some people (like you) report that they cannot view it, while others say that they can. I have sent KZbin e-mails asking them to look into the problem, but they never respond.

Fabulous and very funny! I have rekindled my love of oil painting and am starting with the basics. I too think that it makes perfect sense to do color charts. I have found myself very frustrated wasting time and paint. My teacher showed us how to mix purples, blacks, grays and greens and I have done several charts on these mixtures. For my own reference, I would usually mix two colors with each other in varying amounts: equal, and two other mixes with one of the two colors predominating on each side, and then I would add white. How do you handle that in your charts? Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge.
@tinfoil77710 жыл бұрын
Hello Nancy. I think if you watch Part 3 of this video about color charts it may answer your question. All the mixtures on my charts are about half-and-half of two colors (with some variation because of the transparency of some colors), each mixture lightened up with white in six stages. This creates enough colors to supply most painters with any color they require. I haven't done what you described, that is, varying the proportions of the mixtures before tinting them up, but I would expect that all it would do is show you new ways to create colors that are already found on your half-and-half mixture charts. In other words, I don't think it's necessary to do anything but tint up half-and-half mixtures.

Haha, this ending. I have a question: Why buy orange, green and purple when you can mix those yourself? Maybe it will not be any cheaper to mix yourself so you might as well have them from the tube? I paint a lot of landscapes, and I have never bought a green because I always like to mix the greens myself.
@tinfoil77711 жыл бұрын
A very good question! You are correct, you don't need to buy orange, green, and purple in the tubes, because you can make them from the three primary colors red, yellow, and blue. And for making color charts, as long as you can mix orange, green, and purple nearly exactly the same each time from the three primary colors, and are willing to take the extra time to do it, you don't need to buy those colors in tubes. But most people don't get consistent mixtures (you are no doubt well aware of how many different greens you can make from yellow and blue). So the advantages to buying orange, green, and purple in the tubes are that they are always exactly the same color out of the tubes, so that your mixtures with other colors are more consistent, plus it speeds up the making of color charts by avoiding the extra mixing to get them. So, let's just say that orange, green, and purple are convenience colors in tubes, especially when making color charts.

Thomas Baker Question When i look at the red chart, box 2 that's Red+Yellow. This color is exactly the same as the 1th box on the Orange chard (as that's also red+yellow) same goes for the red chart box 3 (red+blue) and the green chart box 1 (red+blue) However looking at the red chart box 3 (red+blue) and the blue chart box 2 (red+blue) who are the same (as should) and comparing those with the violet chart box 1 its a complete different color. wouldn't mixing red and blue as suggested give a complete different outcome on the violet chart?

These are incredibly helpful and I really appreciate your sharing parts of your DVD for free. I was wondering though, does the DVD have more in depth info on when to choose/mix/etc opaque colors vs translucent colors? This is what I am struggling with. And also would you recommend mixing each of these colors in a chart using 2 of each: cool yellow/warm yellow, cool red/warm red, etc? I truly appreciate your keeping the classical art alive. You are truly gifted. I am a beginner.

Dear Thomas. I think I did not understand you or you made a mistake. Note minutes - 3:30 cube bottom left titled Green has only dark colors in it and not the six colors from which you are making the table, The same are at the Blue & the Violet cube. Am I wrong? Please your help .. Thanks Yoni
@tinfoil77710 жыл бұрын
Hello Yoni. The tiny squares of color on those little charts are so small that it's difficult to see what colors they really are, but they are correct. Viridian, for example, is a dark green, so dark that it looks almost black in such a tiny square. Remember that only the first square on the upper left of each chart contains the pure color, just as it comes from the tube. The rest of the squares on each chart are all mixtures of the chart's color with the other colors, and often these two-color mixtures come out very dark, just as you see them on those charts. The color mixtures on the Blue, Green, and Violet charts are mostly quite dark. That is approximately how they will look when you mix them on your charts. If you will follow the procedure shown in the video, your charts will come out fine.

Thank You Mr Baker for the information. (I love it that you don't take yourself too seriously!) Your paintings are beautiful. One thing that I can't get my head around. Ok. You take two colors and mix. Then with the addition of white to that mix (in various portions) you can make six additional colors. Ok. Is your end product a value scale for the 2 Main colors, or are they separate colors? that would need their own value scale....so that, you can very the warmth and coolness and intensity? (my background...painted intensely a lifetime ago, set it aside for years and now, picking it up again.)
@tinfoil77710 жыл бұрын
Hello Sue. I'm pretty dense, so you'll have to phrase your question another way. I'm not sure what you're asking. What do you mean by "main colors?"
@suewilliams546510 жыл бұрын
Thomas Baker Ok. I'll try again.:) On a chart for Ultramarine Blue. You take the UB and mix it with another color say, Cad. Orange. (2 main colors) This mix of UB and CO creates a third color. Then this 3 rd color is mixed with white from it's darkest tone/value to its' lightest tone/value. So, in effect you are making value charts of the colors that you created. (by mixing UB and CO and then say UB and Viridin. and UB and ? , and UB and ? etc. Am I correct so far? On, the top of your charts you have various new colors/hues which you mixed with just two colors. In your lines beneath you have just different values of these new colors? The reason it's important is that how do you know how to intensity, dull, warm up, cool down etc each new color, that you created using just two main colors?
@tinfoil77710 жыл бұрын
Sue Williams Hello Sue. When you tint up the various new colors that you created, you are not only raising the values, but you are creating new colors. Once you have chosen and mixed any of those new colors, and are using them in a painting, you can of course cool them down by adding cooler colors to them, or warm them up by adding warmer colors to them, or dull them down by either adding a little of their complementary color (which kills intensity), or by simply adding a neutral gray to them. To make a color more intense, about all you can do is put it next to its complementary color.

Richard Schmidt suggests charts for each pair of colours. The first mix of X and Y should lean slightly towards X, the second slightly towards Y. You seem to suggest a middle mix. Is that right? How easy/difficult is this in practice?
@tinfoil77710 жыл бұрын
Hello Bugisami. If you go with that method, you'll do a lot of extra chartmaking, but that's not a bad thing if you like to do it, or can stand it. I do the "middle mix" as much as possible, but when one of the two paints is more transparent than the other, I add more of the transparent one until I get a definite color change in the other one. It's subjective, I know, but if you establish your own definition of "color change," or make a little note on the color chart showing how much extra of the transparent pigment you used (X2, or 1/3 extra, or whatever) you;ll be fine. I have found that no matter what you do, somewhere on your charts you're going to see the color you want, if not exactly, then very close.

Hi Mr Thomas, I want to know if its possible to use just the primary colors to make the charts, cause its easy to get the secondary colors (green, orange and violet) . .thanks!
@tinfoil77710 жыл бұрын
Hello Miguel. Sure, you can do it all with just the three primary colors, since the secondaries are made from them. The only advantage to buying the secondary colors in tubes is that the tube colors are consistent--always the same--whereas your own mixtures may vary a little. Buying the secondary colors is just for convenience and consistency.
