Thomas was so sad when Sybil and Matthew died, he had a good relationship with them, and I love how he continued that through their children :) What an amazing character

Thomas is my favorite character. He gives a lot to think about. Insecurity about ourselves, lack of self esteem, troubled feelings, rejection, sexuality... those are universal subjects we've all been through at one time or another. Thomas is the most complex person at Downton, he has a troubled soul and that only makes him so human and beautiful to my eyes. thank you for this amazing video, nice job :)

I love this video so much. Thomas is such a strong character played by a strong actor, Rob James-Collier. This really shows the pain that Barrow has been through. As Rob even says himself, Thomas is mistaken as evil but is really just misunderstood and this video shows it in many ways. I love this video and can't stop watching it! He is overall my favorite character in the show and favorite actor in the world... I hope more and more people truly understand him and his story...

This is a beautiful video. Thomas is without a doubt the most mistreated and misunderstood person in that house and I'm convinced he's the one who's dealt with the most pain. The thing that really stuck me was the later seasons in which Thomas and his vulnerabilities had already been exposed and he was now open and easy to attack. I lost so much respect for Carson in these seasons. Even if we don't take into account the loneliness and the self hatred and the whole trying to reverse his own sexuality. Thomas had seen the bloodiest of war, had devoted his time during it to healing soldiers on the battle field and off. He was close with Lady Sybil, had fought alongside Matthew, he'd come back injured. His one hope had killed himself and it shattered him, even the Duke treated him deplorably. He'd been completely selfless to Jimmy even after the boy had broken and nearly ruined him, he's been incredibly sweet to the children, saving them from an evil woman and even more sweet to poor Andy. He saved lady Edith's life and still Carson was cruel to him, even where Robert was not. The "My word is still not good enough?" was really the breaking point. After all his suffering, all the love he had given,he was still seen as something grotesque and treated as a stain as he was about to loose his job and his home. People grow, people change and by now I think it was more than fair to give Thomas a second chance. By a season earlier it was more than fair. He was a good man at this point, sarcastic, wounded, but good under it all. And even when the Bulter had met the end of his career, Thomas didn't rejoice, he was entirely respectful towards him. Too respectful even. I really don't understand anyone who could call Thomas evil. Thank god for Richard Ellis.

@Ber P. he actually is realistic. He knows he is an outcast so he sticks to himself and does everything to benefit with regardless of how it affects others. He knows a normal lovelife isn't an option. He knows his lords will get tired of his antics and fire him soon so he goes searching for a better job. He sees an opportunity coming during the war and jumps into it despite suffering a huge loss due to the defective goods. All his actions are what most ppp wud have taken

So beautiful and sad... If only others could see Thomas in this course of events, in his true nature, then they would realize this man has such a good heart inside. I think Thomas didn't even want to be saved, but he saved others... Mrs. Baxter saw the truth, and got beyond the sharp tongued, smug defense. Has anyone else noticed the way he looks down during weddings, at the part where the groom and bride receive the blessing? Is very emotional and sad, because it happens even today, sometimes. But, let's be happy, in the end things turned good for him :) Best video, is simply beyond words, thank you so much for bringing justice to this great character. Rob James-Collier is such a great actor, all of them are great, pure talent. Excellent series, I love Downton Abbey.

Had to keep myself from crying. This was wonderful. Thank you, Soul Mate. Thomas was capable of being cruel. He could be very deliberate and uncompromising when he wanted to be. But I believe that much of that was in no way his fault--he had been wounded for a very long time, and pain can change a person. Accumulating hurt over the years and grappling with who you are, and by the looks of it, being let down by people when all you want to be given is a chance to be true to yourself (before coming to Downton, and again, when he started there), all of these can suck the hope and light out of life. When the dark is all that's left, it is very hard to remain pleasant and upright; either the deep drowns you or it permeates your being and alters you. You chose whatever it is that allows you to survive, even if it means that you have to give up what essentially makes you you (a good heart, a trusting nature, etc.).I am reminded of the time when Bates and Thomas talked just before Thomas shut himself in the bathroom. Bates pointed out that had he (Thomas) been a better person, things wouldn't have been so difficult for him. To which, Thomas replied, that it was being a good person that got him into trouble in the first place. Thomas had become disillusioned with a world that has constantly let him down for trying to be a good person. I understand what it meant for him to become very jaded. I think, on a simpler level, this is what Thomas fought very hard against: wanting to be good and honest to himself, but struggling with being made to feel "wrong" and therefore, inadequate in some way. Being made to feel like this creates deep feelings of bitterness and resentment, not to mention, fuels his own feelings of loneliness and wretchedness. This is how he ends up being so good at protecting himself, even at the cost of antagonizing others. Having to fight to survive teaches you many things: how to mask your insecurity, how to build walls, how to thicken your armor, and how to hurl stones right back at people--and all this while struggling to keep his pain from anyone's eyes. The moments in which Thomas is able to manifest the kindness in his heart (which he had locked away) makes me truly think that if people and the times had only been more forgiving, he would have openly been a very sensitive, eager, and truly sweet human being. Him bonding with children says it all: he finds it very natural to trust little ones who are innocent, without motive or judgment, and around them, he feels like he can be just himself, human, without all the tools that he has armed himself with to withstand the cruelty and unkindness he has come to know for many years. If he did not have to learn to fight, he wouldn't have had to become so hard. The force of necessity did that to him. This does not excuse why he had become such a difficult man for most to trust, much less like. But it does provide people with one important piece of information: people are, at many times, the product of ruthless circumstances. I'm truly happy that in the end, his journey has taken him to a place where he can truly be proud of himself. It takes a lot in a person to keep fighting towards something, even if it is just the following day. Even when Tomas seems so proud and put together, he is so very human just like the rest of us--fighting and failing and sometimes, there is a respite, just up until the fighting resumes again and the endless ordeal becomes overwhelming. I cried tears of joy when I watched "those scenes" in the movie. He, more than anyone, deserves the right to feel true and tender happiness with someone who accepts him without fault or malice. Whenever I think of that "finger to lip moment," I truly feel like sobbing. There is nothing like finding someone who understands and reciprocates the feelings you hold dear to your heart. Renewing your faith in humanity allows you to not only live, but to look forward to living. We need this in large quantities if we want to feel that our life is worth something. I wish you happiness, truly, Thomas. May it return the belief you had in the world before things went differently. May healing come and hope spring eternal in you.

the fight is actually such a good display of depression. and of course a man like barrow, who is born in the wrong time, will feel lonely. when you're that deep in you just wanna feel something. you don't care whats gonna happen to you, out of loyalty to others or lonelyness of self- it doesn't matter anymore. until you get to the breaking point. i love that thomas had miss baxter and master george, who cared for him. it doesn't excuse his actions, but he was trapped and letting out his anger in unhealthy ways.

Trust me when I say I haven't cried for any other character in the series. "So my word is still not good enough,Mr Carson. After all these years"..." I only wish they were"..I know Thomas had himself to blame for making himself not trustworthy by his actions but can u imagine the hurt he must have felt when he realized that he wasn't trusted a bit after 10+ years of service. Being tossed aside like garbage by everyone. I must be mad feeling emotionally wrecked over a fictional character. Now if he doesn't get laid in the upcoming movie...there will be riots

Also, I kind of do feel his character needed help in that department. There was no way of finding other gay guys back then except for pure luck. You just had to make your move and hope 1. that he doesnt kill you if you are wrong, and 2. that he's interested. The show didn't show any implication that there was a potential romance. So, in my eyes, it implies romance is jut not in the cards for him
