The relationship between Thomas and the children is so special and heartwarming. It’s been implied that Thomas was abused as a child so he doesn’t want George or Sybbie to feel unloved or neglected for a moment. They bring out the best in him. A part of him likely considers them to be HIS children in spirit, as he’ll never be able to have any of his own.

What is the greatest achievement in this show is that no character was wasted. Every single one was well written, well rounded and almost felt too real for a fiction. And Barrow is one of the best. It is easy to have character that is always goody2shoes but to have a character like Barrow who went through all personality phases, from bad to good, from nasty to kind, from repulsive to sweet is just one of the rare gems on TV. Adding to that his sexuality and you have character for ages. In his eyes, expressions and deeds you can see troubled life he had. A superb acting by Rob James-Collier who managed to stand next to a likes of Dame Maggie Smith and shine. Bravo!

He reminds me a lot about Hank Voight from Chicago PD. They both have their strong suits as well as their weaknesses. They both have done and said things. Neither chooses to be the way they are. Both have had friends and enemies come and go. They both have evolved. They both have had their pitfuls and still had support through it all. They have done bad things for the right reasons to help and protect those they care about. Both have soft spots for children and both have at time used those closest to them to help them with their schemes but in the end proved to still have hearts of gold. It's like he said to Mr Carson "I'm not like you but I'm not foul". Meaning that he may not be as good as Mr Carson but he is not evil. You can't judge a book by its cover just like how you can't judge a person by their past or by their ways.

@12classics39 Жыл бұрын
I wanted him to find love too, but I liked how the series ultimately showed that he wasn’t defined by his struggles to find a relationship. Nobody should be defined by romance. He has special friendships with George, Sybbie, and Baxter, he’s finally earned the respect from the Crawleys that he always wanted, he’s become a better person, Downton has become his home, he got to be the butler which was his dream job from the start, and the family & servants have come to need him as much as he needs them. Then the movies erased all of that development and reduced his worth to romances; when he runs off with the rich actor which is guaranteed to be an unhealthy and unequal relationship, it’s no different from his desire to run off with the Duke in the pilot. He’s grown out of that now, and I despise the way the films destroyed that. The series finale closes his character arc by enabling him to discover he has a true purpose at Downton, not only as the butler, but also as the Carson to George’s Mary. And when WWII breaks out, Thomas’ medical experience and empathy for the marginalized will undoubtedly make him the perfect person to be in charge of Downton being a safe haven for Jewish refugees as well as the wounded. Plus on the topic of romance, EVERYONE at Downton knows and accepts Thomas for who he is. He’s free to be himself there, especially with him being the butler, I’m sure that Robert and Mary will allow him to have a private relationship with someone, perhaps a servant at a nearby estate or a future coworker.

The only character i actaully really dislike is Edith and Daisy.....daisy does get some character development but shes so annoying and selfish. Also because she can read and become more aware she talks down to the likes of Miss Pattmore etc...Lady Edith has like zero character development. She has no real relationships with staff and once refered Tom to just the choffer even after sybil died. She had zero symphaty for Marigolds adopted mother (forgot her name) but she was so selfish in thinking the family who raied marigold would not care. Barrow literally saved her life and nothing also remember when carlson got a heart attack and all she cared about was the dress. In the end of last season she also looks down at Marys new lover because hes of no noble background and just a driver. She is not aware that Tom comes from the same working class background. Mary is bad too but she has growth and cares about the staff.
