I had a dream I'd be able to sit in on a lecture of Thomas Dolby, and then this happens. Freaky cool stuff mates!

Really enjoyed this. As someone who prefers working in comedy it was fascinating to hear a composer's perspective on the genre. I thought it would be interesting to point out that Chico Marx used to get jobs playing piano at silent film cinemas in New York, then sending his brother Harpo in when he'd land a better paying job. According to Harpo's book there was another lad who used to do these jobs as well, though managers complained that he played too loudly. His name was George Gershwin.

Ah this is brilliant! Glad you referenced the amazing Carl Stalling's work. I remember being so excited when they released CDs of his scoring. Also interesting you referenced the early pathos comedians. Many moons ago I had a puppet chat show of which one episode saw a childhood hero of mine, Sir Norman Wisdom as a a guest. He was kind of a later British Charlie Chaplin in a way. He told me it was easier to make people laugh if you made them cry first. Thank you for this!

"If you want to be funny be serious." This was Elmer Bernstein's philosophy that he got from John Landis when scoring Animal House. He took it to Airplane! and Ghostbusters to great effect.

Thanks for making this available to us. Is there a way we can also see some of the better completed homework assignments too? Your student's ideas would be great context.

I'm so, so happy right now! Professor Dolby knows comedy! Find the movie "Rockula" in which he plays the villain, the proprietor of "Stanley's Death Park". Hilarious!
