He's my 2nd favorite fighter after Real Deal Holyfield. Hearns, as legendary as he is, doesn't get enough respect. The guy was an absolute destroyer, an ultimate fighting machine. That video of him doing pushups with his feet on the chair in the Kronk Gym, with that crazy wingspan is forever etched in my mind.

My Emanuel Stewart story: less than a yr before his death, I seen Emanuel at a fight for Andy Lee in Chicago. After his fighter won, he exited the stadium through the stands. I took notice how he stopped numerous times for everyone wanting a photo. Not wanting to hold him up any longer, I said, "hey Manny, what's Hitman Hearns up to these days?". "Still hanging out at his place in Detroit" was his reply.

Seeing Emmanuel Steward carry an unconscious Tommy Hearns, all 160 lbs of him, after his KO loss to Hagler, brought tears to my eyes. THAT RIGHT THERE IS REAL HUMANITY and not just seeing some boxing trainer! Seeing this tribute by Hearns to Steward brought me to tears, once again!

First Hearns vs Sugar Ray fight, I rooted for Ray of course, just won Olympic medal wnet to close circuit fight, Tommy lost. The next day he apologized to his fans, and I, being from Michigan said to myself, why ain't I rooting for Tommy? He has such a big heart, I have been in his corner ever since and actually got to shake his hand in Chicago. And Manny, what a great human being, this was such a big loss for us all, never be another one like him.

I had these exact same emotions when asked to speak at a close friend’s mother’s celebration of life. When Tommy said, he told himself he was going to be strong... being strong is being real and allowing yourself to be free to cry and express your emotions if that’s the way you feel. It’s ok.
