Sometimes when two great fighters get together, the match-up is style is just completely one sided. This fight reminded me of George Foreman vs Joe Frazier. Two great fighters, but one is just tailor made for the other.
@murph1654 жыл бұрын
So true. Very good comparison. Had Frazier and Foreman fought 10 times, Foreman would win every time. Same with Duran and Hearns. Duran's game plan had nothing to do with the outcome -- his style was tailor made for Hearns. Smother him? There was no way he could get inside that jab of Tommy's.
@peacefulbliss14 жыл бұрын
When you fought Hearns, the problem was always the same for anybody. You couldn't fight Tommy on the outside no matter who you were. You had to get inside and that meant taking some shots to do that. If you could get inside you had a chance. This was one fight where Duran truly was intimidated. He stayed at long range and when you do that against Tommy Hearns, forget it.
@chriswells5064 жыл бұрын
...unless you were Marvin Hagler and were willing to take some shots in order to get inside. But you're right, it's all about style, especially with guys this size.

Duran had to fight this fight on the inside. He was 33 here. If you watch him at lightweight he was a different fighter.

Unfortunately, Duran never wanted to change his style of basically overall standing and exchange of punches. Other boxers wanted to be the best with what ever was allowed put at use, and they did, namely the moving and/or jumping around effectively. Duran would have been much more of the legend he already is had he adapted.

I know. No way in the world could Duran or anyone else expect to beat Hearns like that. A good blueprint for how to deal with Tommy Hearns when you have a height disadvantage is the amateur fight between Hearns and Aaron Pryor. Pryor smothered him and was right underneath him for three rounds thus neutralizing his power and taking away Hearns reach advantage.

@@Mopo3oB44 Rope a dope against a fighter with fast hands, accuracy and power? He got it totally wrong and as many have suggested, the only way he could win is fighting close up and in the pocket. I can count at least 20-25 clean, heavy, Hearns-style blows to both body and head mainly, of which only one or two would suffice to end all of today's boxers careers and this man after a 8-9 hit barrage, instead of running away, he tries to counter. This awesome man took at least 25 brutal blows, I repeat twenty-five, in less than 3 minutes, dropped three times in total and still got up from that insanely savage well-placed right to lose by a TKO. If that's not a chin of granite what is? Durán was just a true beast, one of a kind human. They don't make them like that anymore. As for this matchup. Durán had little chance to begin with. His plan, whatever that could have been, went to hell after the first punches. I don't mean to look anti-Hearns, or overlook and downplay his huge win here. I liked the guy very much too, but Durán is my most favorite boxer ever.
@eranliber59935 жыл бұрын
Impossible not to appriciate duran. The man was everything you said and more. The mismatch is here is because of age, built - and in my opinion - the fact that duran was a natural 135 champ. It is astonishing by itself he went up all that weight and even later killed barkley (who defeated hearns twice). All of the fab 4 were legends. My favorote boxer ever is hearns - impossible to outbox - yet life threatning to outbrawl.

Fight shows how great Sugar Ray was. He knocked out Hearns and made Duran quit.

@@namor679 Well, Duran was a lightweight who came up in weight to beat Sugar Ray Leonard. So in that sense, you could argue Duran was better pound-for-pound. Maybe the greatest lightweight champion of all-time, who came up and added welterweight, jr. middleweight and middleweight titles to his resume. I mean, they are both great, but I can see how people could make the argument for Duran being greater. Both of them having amazing accomplishments. You could make the argument both ways and that's what is so great about this era.

I saw this at a live pay per view event in an event center and when Tommy hit Duran with that KO punch it was like the air escaped the building. Lots of attendees apparently lost some bets. Tommy excelled. Duran, however, had several obstacles he couldn’t overcome. Tommy’s reach and age advantage. Duran needing to lose too much weight. A slippery canvas that kept him off balance. Getting cut early. Tommy’s continuance of his retribution tour after that heartbreaking loss three years earlier to Sugar Ray. -What a stunner of a fight-
