Not quite 100%. For example, he says that "What hurts you today makes you stronger tomorrow." Obviously he's referring to the fact that it is adversity that hardens people and makes them able to withstand greater challenges, but there can be examples found of people who were only damaged rather than helped by the pain they suffered. Take Karl Marx for example. He was a complete fool by Jefferson's standards, and one of the ways he proved it was by the fact that the tragedies he suffered only made him increasingly bitter and cruel. Nothing about his painful life experience (most of it self-inflicted) made him a better person.

Thomas Jefferson was widely believed to be one of the smartest people to be president.
