One of the most technically proficient drummers I've ever seen... masterful! Watch closely for the way he accents certain beats with his right foot using both a "heel up" and "heel down" approach to produce this effect in the "chorus" sections!

Before you complain "OH MY GOSH HE'S SUCH A SHOWOFF" remember this is part of a drum video. He's using the techniques he's discussed in his instruction. He's not just showing off, there's a reason he's doing those 32nd notes on the kick.

Totally agree he does have that metal edge that mangini lacks. . Mangini is fenomenal but he sounds like his drumset is mAde of a bunch of pringles cans and only marks the sticks, he do not bangs them like thomas

plus Mangini studied same college as the other guys, just similar background. Thomas Lang is for me the undoubted top drummer on Earth right now.

The thing I don't dig about this, is having his cymbals on his boom stands the way he does. His cymbals clearly smack into the booms when he hits them on accents. Looks cool, but that's it.

@AfterlifeBlack there's no indication that any of these guys were "good friends." mike portnoy was friendly with mangini, but then again portnoy is friendly with EVERYONE. mike's personality played a role for sure, but saying he got the gig largely due to the fact that hes friends with him is false. the reality is that he stayed true to the tunes, which lang did not, he owned the odd time signatures test, which lang did not, and in addition to that yes, there was a personality chemistry.
@frazer012313 жыл бұрын
the fact that you sit there and write he is slow proves two things, 1) you either aren't a drummer or are just too impressed but your own little accomplishments that you think you are comprable too one of the most physically capeable drummers in the spot light and 2) you're most likely not a drummer, because as most drummers know speed is not the most important thing while it does open up doors for you it doesn't make you better than the next guy. i could continue but character limit saved u
@georgewalshmusic14 жыл бұрын
@ToolandMAIDEN14 As I said, I bet he is a great drummer .. but tell me where in this video he does some severely difficult stuff. The beat was a straight 4/4 time .. there was no time signature changes or much syncopation at all. I am not saying he is a bad drummer .. just this video doesn't display "the greatest drummer in the world" by far. So I say again...I was hoping for a better drumming session. Great drummer I am sure but it was more of a sneaker commercial than a drumming display.
@SuperHighGloss14 жыл бұрын
@Namal23 and gladly i will: i think there is no soul in his playing, to me it's meaningless rumble. it just bores me after a few minutes. some phrasing seems also wooden (1:11..?) and what are seethrough-plastic-kits for? this one even sounds like plastic. meinl cymbals i never liked, they sound like paper; no body. it's funny that there are some 'heavy-hitters' (prog)rock drummers who hit these papery cymbals very hard so they all sound like splashes...
@divinegrinder12 жыл бұрын
@91344789 i don't even like Dream Theater but i don't think it was about him not being as "good" as Mike Mangini. All the drummers that tried out are top level drummers. They have to consider who they get along with the best and who they feel most comfortable playing with. Virgil Donati tried out too.
@adam1ooo12 жыл бұрын
@tamakit123 Or, either Rammstein bought the rights to the riff or vice versa hence why they both use it. This IS from a Rammstein song and it is quite evidently used by Thomas Lang too so one or the other has bought the rights to be able to use the riff from the other. Or they other just let them use it without having purchasing anything.

I dont understand why people fight about whos a better drummer, you can learn something new from all drummers and theyre all artists. You don't see people putting comments on Van Gogh videos or whatever saying picasos a bigger badass. Maybe everyone should just stop this nonsense and watch the artist and enjoy his work.
