If Brokaw knew McGuane as well as he claims to, he would know that McGuane did not know Buffett in the 60s. Nor did Buffett know Key West.

At the moment my favorite McGuane is his Bushwhacked Piano novel. Endlessly entertaining and always seeing hidden layers of people's minds. Bellow was actually writing about the space between two thoughts, and I had never experienced that before. Reading Panama now, and a moment with a nail, drugs, a door and a hand seemed and still seems not just far fetched, but physically impossible. It made me restless enough to put the book down for a month, while I attempted to read Bolton's book. (read it) Picking up Panama again, it only took about three pages to be amazed at just what McGuane was describing. Maybe he was just testing us. Like a broke alcoholic slamming his empty glass on the bar. I've always wanted to ask him why the title of his entertaining and offbeat film he coscripted with Jim Harrison starring Keith Carradine and Tom Waits was called Cold Feet.

Isn't it called Cold Feet because the other dude got cold feet and didn't want to share the loot?

Second only to Don Delillo as a modern American novelist.

Mr. McGuane is so modest. And he is one of the best of course.
