This movie and its music awakened old memories, deep injuries that should have been history long ago and yet they are there and will never go away. Memories that are covered with all the good memories in my life and yet are so full of hope that everything will end well, like in this movie. This is exactly where the art lies in this music - almost indescribable.

Me too. I have two sons but I had a daughter 3 months ago. It's really kind of weird to me how to know that I have a child of the same gender is me, it has brought up a lot of the stuff that my mom did to me when I was a kid. She was very sick and still is and it has forced me to confront a lot of that stuff. It has also made me think back to when I was young and I look at my daughter and I just feel nothing but love for her and want to protect her from everything. I look at her and I think to myself, how could my mom have treated me the way she did? I can't understand it. I just know that she's really sick but while it doesn't excuse it, it explains it but the important thing in there is that it does not excuse it. It's really weird how psychology works but that what has happened for me. Don't get me wrong, I love all of my children equally. I would die for any one of them and that is not an exaggeration. I think that maybe I'm sort of looking at my daughter and seeing this little girl and just being horrified at the way my mom treated me because I didn't deserve any of itI could never imagine treating my own daughter that way. It's been a very hard last few months but I'm getting through it. I suggest doctor Ramani. She's great at helping victims of narcissistic abuse. I watched a video of hers over the last few days that is 3 hours long. It really made everything click when I got to the last part of it. It made everything for my entire life makes sense. Like stemming from the way my mom treated me to that being the reason why I picked abusive partners and how to heal from that. It really changed my perspective. I hope it helps you too. It sounds like you have a mom much like mine was. There are some things that she did to me that I don't like to talk about. Sometimes I'm worried that if I do, people are going to think that I'm making it up for attention. I wish I was. I really only have one friend that I can talk to about this kind of stuff but I'm glad that at least he and I can be there for each other.he knows everything that happened with my daughter's pregnancy. Her dad was not involved and while I'm glad he wasn't in a way because it made for a pretty stress-free pregnancy and birth, it's just been a pretty hard year for me. Let me shut up now. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to ramble on this long. It's just when I read that book, I did not realize that my mother was a narcissist yet. When I watched the movie now, I see my mother and Michelle Pfeiffer's character, ingrid. Specifically the part where Astrid says to her, it's like you don't even want me to be happy. She looks at her and says, why wouldn't I want you to be happy? You could tell it was sarcastic in a way. That is something that narcissist frequently do, they will try to destroy your relationships with other people because they are jealous that you're attention is not focused solely on them. Once again, I promise I'm going to shut up now. I just thought maybe some of this might be helpful to you because I was reading your comment and it resonated with me.

One thing I do want to caution you about if you do watch the video that I was referring to, she does say that that voice in your head never does completely go away. You can work to heal from your trauma and you can get to a different place in life but that voice in your head that is constantly doubting you because of the way that your parents spoke to you will never completely go away. I just wanted to warn you that she says that and it is absolutely true. When were raised by parents like that, it is communicated to us that we don't deserve to be prioritized and that are purpose in life is to the well-being of our parents ahead of ourselves. This goes into our adult relationships in the form of accepting what's called breadcrumbing. This is where they give you just a little bit of attention, enough to keep you around but they don't really prioritize you. My mother outright said that no one would ever want to be with me and I think that even thoughI know on the surface that she was wrong, it has caused me to attract partners who are also narcissistic. It has also caused that voice in my head to always say, but you don't deserve to be happy. You don't deserve the life that some of your friends have where their happily in relationships or married. I will always blame her for that because she did it to me during my adolescents when as you know, that's when you're really forming as a person and trying to figure out who you are. I don't think I will ever be able to forgive her for that. Once again, I'm rambling and I'm sorry. I'm just trying to help you but let me know if it's not appreciated. I will stop.

One of the absolute best film soundtracks I've ever listened to. Newman never misses, he is so brilliant at making such kind of music that romanticises pain and tragedy through beauty. His music expresses that so deeply.

It's one of my favourite movies of all time. The story is so unique and Michelle Pfeiffer really does a terrific job in this film, but nobody I know seems to get "White Oleander" as I do or even likes it. It has always made me sad that the movie remains underrated, but maybe you're right and the fact that we are the only ones who recognize the greatness of the movie makes it even more special ♥️.

I thought she played that role so well. Read the book though, they left out so much that was in the book. Of course they had to for time but the book is much better. Trust me, once you pick it up, you won't be able to put it down. I've read it five times now lol. I'll fight for really made you believe that she was actually a narcissist. She is one of the greatest actresses I have ever seen. It's like she takes that script and she's like okay, I'm on it.

Keep going, Its the only way.. The past is now gone, as well as History.. Right now, you can be out the door in seconds, hear the birds. Feel the grass. Touch the sky.. Don't stop pushing, keep moving, keep moving.. Don't wait, don't hide, don't hate, don't listen to them. Push it, hold it tight, run after it, listen to it, feel the vibe.. Don't. Hold. Back.

It moves me. This movie, and music moves me very deeply. It elicits a very sad depression, yet a very relaxed feeling. Maybe limp, lifeless, possibly maybe an 'alive' feeling. When I listen to this, I drift off into a clear blue,.. night sky. No trees, a warm wind. Stars as far as the eye can see. I have a rather quaint cottage in the middle of a large green pasture. Nothing but the smell of (as @satine8541 said) the four elements; and I'm just sitting in a comfy lawn chair looking up. Bravo.

Thomas Newman's music in this movie speaks of the 4 elements of air, earth, fire, and water for me personally. You can float with the wind, feel the rain, run in the sand, and see the fire on the hillside, he must be from California, it speaks to my soul as a native of the state. He captures each element so well, so poetic.

The last scene in the movie where she comes to see her mother in prison in goth. So powerful as she tells her you don’t have anymore control over me.

I play both Piano and Cello -- neither well. However I can tell you both from experience and from theory: YOU CAN LEARN! You CAN learn at almost any age if you are so determined. You simply need to practice. Used pianos can be rented on the super-cheap. Alternately you can buy a used piano. Or you can purchase a keyboard -- but I'd be careful there, as the "action" should be as realistic as possible. But then you can study classical (which is how you should always start) and just progress... FF

I'm an atheist, so this will sound contradicting; but I feel as if Thomas Newman has some sort of connection with the "other side" - his songs stop me right in the middle of whatever I'm thinking about and just give me pure satisfaction, I feel the presence of lost relatives smiling down on me, and it's this music that draws tears from my eyes, as for a brief moment, I feel as if all that was once dark has had a light shined upon it, giving me peace of mind

Doubt it's a "song" -- instead it could be just a part of an overall non-stop composition with its own peaks-n-valleys and various rhythmic and instrumental permutations masterfully presented in this beautiful arrangement. Reminds me of another composer: James Newton Howard... Wonder if this composer (Thomas Newman) has more of the "same" somewhere else.. Otherwise, an amazing soundtrack.

feeling tingles? Totally taken out of the reality of the moment you're in? Overwhelmed with feelings and completely mystified as to where they came from? George Watts, I'm looking right at you brother :-)... well, you my friend have just been "Tom Newmafied" seriously though, if someone could bottle what he does and sell it on the open market, they would put Eli Lilly out of business. His creations are medicine for the soul and we are all a little better off because of it.
