When Thomas of SchneidersLaden came to play his session on the Karusell in Adam Chalk's Galery GH36, the vision of the installation came to fruition for the first time.
As with the onset of Corona and the gift of the Karusell as a result, he wanted to combine music and visual arts in one set up and provide space for exploration to various types of artists.
When Adam told his friend Alexandra Macia, visual and sonic artist, about the Karusell coming to the Gallery she was excited to become involved and act as the key component in realizing the visuals. She invited her friend Enrica Muta, sonic and video artist to join.
Following deacon to move forward, Macia installed a fixed camera covering most of the room and used a secondary camera to film closeups out of hand. Alexandra used her analogue video mixing equipment in combination with an LZX_rack, borrowed from SchneidersLaden to mix and mangle the video signals of both cameras to create a final output which was to be displayed on two old fashioned televisions placed in the shop window of the gallery.
After sound and video had been recorded to disk, we at Alex4 edited both to render a final track. We did not manipulate the sound further during edit, but added a bit of compression and limiting to provide better listening quality on KZbin.
Thomas himself had not played in public since a few years but was happy to perform and enjoyed a nice Sunday afternoon. After he had tuned all systems included in the Karusell carefully, and to the room, he took some time off to let the sound inspire him and find a direction. The master clock speed had been set down to 30bpm to achieve an extra long cycle time on the sequencers involved.
We recorded about three hours of slowly evolving sound reflecting the day. First we thought this would be a nightmare to edit, but finally we even had fun because Thomas kept everything well under control and in conjunction which made it easy to cut.
All were happy with the output and look forward to the other releases to come from other artists who joined the exhibition.
