If they weren’t supported financially would you still want immigrants to go through a legal process as opposed to an open border? I’m all for freedom and ensuring individual rights and responsibility, it seems to me that having controlled immigration would benefit domestic labour at the cost of domestic consumers in the same way domestic businesses try to fix the game by lobbying for restrictions and import tariffs on goods and services from foreign competitors.
@therealthreadkilla

@@tcskips "domestic businesses try to fix the game by lobbying for restrictions and import tariffs on goods and services from foreign competitors" And what if those foreign competitors are playing by a different set of rules. My industry here in the states has been decimated by china. BUT as it turns out the product from china that I make here the Chinese government subsidies. If the Chinese company makes a product for export the Chinese government pays that company a 15% "export fee" SO that company can lose 10% on every product made AND STILL realize a 5% profit. THAT is NOT capitalism nor is it FREE MARKETS.
@tcskips
@tcskips 2 жыл бұрын
@@therealthreadkilla no it isn’t and if we were able to get rid of import tariffs and restrictions for goods from China that are subsidised, American consumers would benefit from the artificially cheap product meaning lower prices for Americans. That would be a good thing for Americans, not bad.
@therealthreadkilla
@therealthreadkilla 2 жыл бұрын
@@tcskips How do Americans buy cheap products without jobs? Why do you think there is this endless chorus about the increase in the Min. wage? The median wage in 2019 for working Americans was 19.33/hr. I seem to know as many people who don't work as do. Why are we ignoring the supply chain issue revealing in drastic detail the insanity of not making things here? The fastest growing economies on the planet are where things are made. Real wealth is making products world markets want to buy not shuffling debt back and forth. I've made the claim for 2 decades that if you accept that junk from me I can build it for the China price, no takers. 1/2 the cost of all manufactured goods in the USA are regulation costs. If the Yuan was a free floating currency (AKA capitalism) Chinese goods wouldn't be so cheap. If we entered war with china, the USA would runout of screws in 18 months along with everything else. that sure seems like one hell of price we are forcing our grandchildren to pay so that we can buy $30 toasters and $700 TV's today.

When the Bible talks about helping the needy and the poor, it was mainly talking about the Jewish people, NOT about the gentiles. So, yes, the "border" was a clear concept to them also, when it comes to social assistance to different groups of people. Even Jesus told the Canaanite (gentile) woman, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” One can argue about the term, "dogs," but the prioritizing of the available resources is certainly clear.

Mr. Thomas Sowell is solid as Granite, in his observations and conclusions, here and most every aspect upon which he shares. I would like to share my personal experiences with both sides of this coin, being discussed here. My parents emigrated to the United States of America, from the Country of Sweden, post World War II. I however, refer to myself as an "American" and NOT as a "Swedish-American," because my family was truly desirous of integrating into the "American Society." My parents emigrated to the U.S.A. through the Proper and Legal channels afforded them by the U.S. Immagration Laws. In order to gain Legal Acceptance into and to Gain Entry into the U.S.A. with the Status of Legal Emigrant, my parents necessarily had to complete the following, PRIOR to gaining Entry. The following are but a few of the processes required of each of my parents: 1.) They both had to apply, to initiate the process to be accepted into the Immagration Process that might eventually allow them to gain entry into the U.S.A, Once their Applications were approved, they then needed to wait for 7 years before knowing if they would be accepted or not and in the interim continue with all of the other requirements that go along with being accepted into the Immigration Process. Some of these, I've listed below... 2.) They each had to have all currently available Vaccines and Innoculations, so that they would not bring any diseases with them, into the U.S.A. 3.) They each were required to provide proof that any and all Debts in their current Country had been satisfied, so that no Debt would follow them into the U.S.A. 4.) They were also required to have "A Sponsor" living in the U.S.A. This "Sponsor" would sign a document stating that they, the Sponsor, would provide for all Support of my parent's needs, if they were unable to Support themselves. This was so that my parents would not become a Burden upon Society. 5.) My parents also had to have a certain amount of savings to bring with them, so that they would be able to establish themselves among other American families. I no longer recall the amount of "Savings" that was required of them to have access to. Upon meeting the required criteria and 7 years later, my Parent's Application was accepted and... 6.) Upon entering into the U.S.A., my parents were given a new Surname, (last name), which they immediately adopted and without question or hesitation. While, YES, this is a lot to go through, if you're honest with yourself, I think that you can see the benefits that each and every process provided the U.S.A. Now, that is how immigration is done Legally. Because of what my family has had to go through, in order to be an "American" family, I find it difficult to summon much empathy or sympathy for those who Enter this Country Illegally. Please accept my apology, but in the interest of all, I will need to leave the second half of this coin to another time and place. This is basically a Book already. Please everyone, remain Well and at least reasonably Happy and until our paths cross again... Keep Smiling...

In my understanding of Dr. Milton Friedman, he was never a conservative nor a "liberal" (welfarist) he was at one point a Keynesian central planner intellectual type when he worked for government but when he left working for government he became a libertarian and argued with his Anarchist son about whether government is to be kept small or gotten rid of. I think his life as a libertarian went pretty far as explaining to each side that if they are to find common ground they must scale back on their own side. But only in as far as saying that people can have these issues explained to them in a fair and reasonable way. As for change? Oh I would say it's irrational to try to keep government small. That's like putting bondage gear on the dominatrix they just find it kinky it doesn't suppress them unless you actually chain them up. And what would be the point of a government be if it can't govern over it's subjects?

It amazes me that the minute someone says illegal immigrant, the average American automatically thinks Mexican or Hispanic. People need to realize that the group of people that are in America illegally come from all over the world and represent EVERY race. Just because you're illegal doesn't necessarily mean you are Hispanic, Latino or Mexican. Likewise, just because you are Hispanic, Latino or Mexican doesn't necessarily mean that you are in America illegally. People need to get that straight. As much as I agree and sometimes admire TS, he's wrong on the controversy aspect of "assimilation" because immigrants do want to learn English (in fact many of us just do it BEFORE coming to the US as part of becoming an educated person), but they have no desire whatsoever to abandon their mother tongue. That is, if my mother tongue is Spanish, I would like to pass that knowledge to my children and the children of my children. In fact, the goal is for them to know 3 or 4 languages. The problem is that a significant portion of the American society is not comfortable with that idea, they discourage other languages and in fact become upset and rude when someone says anything other than English in front of them. In that sense, becoming less educated, ignorant, by only knowing 1 language is not a desirable "American" trait that immigrants pursue. It's not a full take it or leave it like TS thinks. Immigrants assimilate whatever it is that they think is worth assimilating. Also, I've lived for a 3rd of my lifetime in the US and have never heard of any Hispanic wanting to secede from the US in any former Spanish/Mexican state like Florida, California, Texas, etc.... It just makes no sense for anyone. I'm surprised about his statements in 8:15

Critical-thinking and one's eye's being wide-open enables one to understand that American History and Civilization as experienced by the Native Black American (NBA) lineage, for example, is consumed by the ignorance and arrogance of those who, consciously and inconsciously, allow White Supremacy to prevail. I've read many of Dr. Sowell's books, most of his op-eds and some articles, and watched a good number of his interviews and speeches on various media platforms, which is why I know his curious notions and conclusions about NBAs are often framed absent pertinent historical and economic context, and in juxtaposition to "people-of-color" and immigrants, none of whom have been the descendents of American slavery and segregation, nor have they experienced the American-style deprevations and depravities those conditions spawned, and continue to in may ways. These are important distinctions with a difference. How does one explain why the average net worth of households headed by NBA college graduates is much less than ones headed by White high school dropouts, for instance, or fifty-percent (50%) of NBA households have a ZERO average net worth? Like White conservatives, and some immigrants, Sowell claims most NBAs have a "victim" mentality, are "perpetrators" of their own disregard and position as the country's bottom-caste. It's blaming the victim and major bullshyte by any metric. NBAs have ALWAYS fought back with what little they had, and its efforts at COLLECTIVE SELF-DETERMINATION have always been met with contempt, when not violence. Its contemporary manifestation involves a former president, his powerful political and media acolytes, and their followers, who are instigating a cynical, (largely) race-based disinformation campaign via Voting Rights, Critical Race Theory, The 1619 Project, Anti-Racism, Book Censorship, Black Lives Matter, and U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, the purposes of which are to divert attention from his legal troubles, to rile and fortify his base to support him regardless, to gain political power the GOP could not otherwise with integrity obtain recognizing its decreasing demographics and, many believe, to instigate civil and race wars. This is in addition to him formenting a failed January 6, 2021 insurrection at our Nation's Capital to regain a presidency he lost in a fair election, an event which mocked the U.S. Constitution, formented violence and death, and exumed racist imagery and language in the open, cementing its reputation as a White Nationalist Movement using antebellum tropes to keep White Supremacy alive. The totality of these circumstances are enabled by many citizens who have forgotten, or couldn't care, that truth, ethics and morality matter, and grifting, mendacious sociopaths are no remedy. NBAs since forever and a day have been survivors and major contributors to all aspects of American life. And here we are. Because its curious notions are too expensive, Thomas Sowell would do well to stay out of Curiosity Shops. This political independent can't make it more plain. With due respect.

Thomas Sowell is engaging in collectivist thinking here. If you disagree, please show me how I'm wrong (it's plainly true, so I don't think I need to "prove" it). If you agree with Sowell here, you agree with collectivists. I don't, but I'm an An-Cap. If I want to invite people onto my property, that shouldn't be up to a third party to decide.

If you're giving out general invites then I would hope you would want to protect your property from those that want to destroy it for their own personal gains. But 1st, why the hell would you give out general invites. If your offering specific invites, then your discretion is already being exercised and there should be no need for threats of violence unless your previous discretion was faulty.

Open Borders was the policy for the majority of nations history. That's why the founders never granted the government the power to regulate immigration, only who could be naturalised as a citizen. A return to Open Borders would increase our GDP (and the worlds, if everyone adopted it). Bryan Caplan laid this out exceptionally well in his Open Borders book. Sowell was just wrong on this.

also “something was something” for the “majority of history” is not an argument. thats a complete logical fallacy in a debate. it doesnt prove anything good or bad or otherwise. i dont fall for this stuff.

You're incorrect. Article 4 section 4 of the American Constitution mandates that the federal government protects the people from invasion and guarantees a republican form of government. Also, the first thing the founding fathers did after creating this great country was pass restrictions on immigration. Basically, the founding fathers knew that America at the time was a majority Anglo-Saxon Protestant country and that is Nordic Protestant immigrants will obviously assimilate better than a Nigerian Muslim or a Hassidic Jew
