Thomas & Stereo Hi tomas Why you didn't compare all those amps with the Yamaha A-S801 that is under $1,000 . Also second question I have a ML ESL X what combo or integrated you recommend actually using a Yamaha A-S801 ,Thanks
@soopy19755 жыл бұрын
Hard to compare as there are a lot of products for around £1000 such as Marantz 8006B Rega Elicit, Audiolab, Musical Fidelity, Rotel, Yamaha,Naim, Schitt, Creek and Roksan. The customer is bamboozled with choice and no retailer will allow you test each one to see what works best in your setup
@ThomasAndStereo5 жыл бұрын
I don't have the AS801 anymore, it was my first 'high-end' integrated amp but that was a few years ago. It has a lot of features and it seems many people like it. I personally prefer the IOTAVX, Sprout 100 and Atoll IN30 over the AS801. I can't really pinpoint why since I can't do an AB test but it's just based on how I feel when I have listened to all of them.
@ThomasAndStereo5 жыл бұрын
I think some have a trial period. Like Schitt is 15 days I think. This IOTAVX has too but I don't remember how many days. The PS audio I think has a trial period.

I recently purchased this IotaVX-stack, and have been listening to it for about a week. It has replaced my Marantz PM-6005 which has been working flawlessly for about 6 years. My speakers are simple B&W 685 S2 bookshelves and the B&W ASW610XP active subwoofer. As a source I only use my Technics SL1500c with Nagaoka MP150 cartridge. I use the built in pre-amplifier in the turntable. The IotaVX SA3 and PA3 are a huge improvement for my system. I do not know much about neutrality, but I'm able to hear details in my record collection that I have never heard before. The amplifiers make you listen to your music all over again. It brings a lot of fun back to the hobby over here! I am not skilled in technical details, but I do can hear great depth and seperation in the music. Much more than with the Marantz. I am thinking of upgrading my speakers to Dynaudio Evoke 30's, not because the current speakers are not sounding good enough, but I believe that this IotaVX Stack deserves better. Thank you for your videos Thomas. Really enjoying your work!

I pulled the trigger on the SA3/PA3 combo and have never looked back. One of the smartest decisions I have ever made in my pursuit of great sound at prices I can afford. I did the SA3 first, then after deciding on some new speakers (87DB @8ohms, close out special from GR Research) I snagged the PA3. Speaker cables from Blue Jean Cables, and the Audiolab 6000CDT. The SA3 has a great DAC which saves on some money, AND contributes to great audio. I also recommend the Bluetooth Dongle. It opens up music/movies on the internet. Ian, at IOTA is a straight up solid dude who cares about his customers. My units arrived in 3 days from the UK, packaged more adequately than necessary, which shows great care. The enjoyment in this hobby is to find out for yourself what you like. A lot of people spent years buying and selling, losing money, reading reviews, and repeat the cycle over and over again. From my experience, everybody has got their own taste. Just like eating food or drinking wines. You eat the same kind of food for too long, you want to change to something else, that’s why we keep changing things. On the other hand, your taste in music can really influence your choice on the kind of equipments you buy. Neutrality may work for some, but others may never be happy with it. Personally, after few decades of playing around, I am back to using the type of equipments that serve my taste. High end gears nowadays are so accurate, transparent and high definition, that playing 70s, 80s, 90s music on few hundred thousand dollars system can be painful to hear. I find listening to vintage vinyl using vintage equipments to be most satisfying. 80s and 90s music also sound great with that generation of equipments. Try playing hip hop, trance, edm on 1950s tube amps and large horns, and they are no good. Same as playing 70s disco or 80s pop music on todays high end system, and you will hear too much compression, little dynamics, lack of bass and highs. I like many kind of music, from classical, pop, jazz, to edm. So my choice in choosing my system is to find one that can play everything decently. To me, a pretty neutral full range system with an optional sub is best. But my best friend, who only listen to classical and 50s and 60s music. He currently got may be 10 pairs of vintage Altecs and JBLs the size of small elephants, and 5-6 rusty tube amps. He never cared about anything other than how musical his system sound. Forget definition and neutrality. He just want room filling soundstage and the feeling of being there. Sound that doesn’t hurt his ears. And this is a guy who had owned 2-300 pieces of high end equipments over 40 years. So I guess there is no right or wrong, no best or worst. It just comes down to taste. And losing money on changing equipments every now and then, is just part of the hobby. It’s the journey that’s what makes it fun. My current system is well over $100k and I am still not ok with it. That’s because, if I am ok with it, I will have to find another hobby. lol

Eloquently put. I feel the same. I love all music and I can chnae genres 20 times an hour. I've been trying to find something that can fit detroit techno to Lenard Cohen. I feel like I'm already on the path of losing money...but since I'm on a tight budget...its a slow bleed. It is strange how a man can forget about such things over time...
@howardskeivys41844 жыл бұрын
I’m old school. I’ve been a 2 channel man since the mid 80’s. To me, neutrality means unaltered sounds. Nothing added, nothing taken away. The shortest possible route/circuit from the input to the output stage. That’s why I lean toward analogue amps like the Rega Aethos or it’s big brother the Osiris or even amps like the Kinki Studio EXN1 or EXM1+ I prefer my money to go purely into the resolving capability of the amp and good current reserves. Dacs, phono stages, streaming ability can always be added as and when. I agree that if an amp is too nutral, it can sound thin, cold, clinical, lose some musicality. That is where component matching is so crucial. You are right Thomas. Within a given price bracket, there is no such thing as better, just different. Ultimately it comes down to the experience, product knowledge and neutrality of the dealer and preference of the end user. Keep up the good work and informative videos.

Thomas, your review and added comments about music neutrality is very much appreciated. Agreed with your assessments about sound coloration. Overloaded bass especially, muddies the waters so to speak. I like it, clean, and sharp not muddy. I got the SA3, testing its use with 3 different soeakers: Fluance Signature Series Surround HiFi Bookshelf speakers, Elac Debut Reference speakers, and Elac Debut 6.2s . All play very well with the SA3. I'm comparing the sound against a Denon DRA-800H Receiver. The SA3 seems to deliver a slighly brighter sound , without any adjustments to tonality, and tighter and quicker bass delivery vs. the Denon. I paralleled the Fluances and the Elac Reference speakers, setup in the rear of my finished basement studio setup construed during COVID pandemic in 2020, attached to the B speaker connection on the Denon. Let me tell you, they play extremely well together, But, After awhile, the impedance draw probably overheated the Denon and it shut down under its protection circuitry. I should add that i also had tbe Elac Debuts connected to the A speaker output at tge same time. This configuration produced wonderful rokm filling sound. I tried the same paralleled speakers with tge SA3 , without the A connection , so just tge paralleled soeakers played . The SA3 seemed to handle that load , did not get overly warm to the touch like the Denon did, nor shut down. I may order the PA3 , retire the Denon to another use down the road or just stay with the Denon, play the paralleled speakers separately as A and B speakers at the same rear of the room setup, and connect the SA3 as the Zone 2 amp off the Denons preouts for that purpose and connect tge SA3 to the 3rd pair of speakers in the front of the room. There is no video involved. The basement studio is used for listening and drum playing accompaniment to My Music. Im 69 yo, and retired . Stay well and safe all.

Thomas, appreciate your description of neutrality in sound delivery. I'm just starting to get into audiophilism. During 2020, due to COVID hibernation, working from home (and now at 69 yo, retired due to physical disabilities from spinal issues), I created a basement studio to enjoy My Music for just listening pleasure and playing music to my renewed interest in playing Drums. Purchased a new Denon DRA-800H Receiver, a e new Audio Technica 120XBTUSB TT, Tascam dual cassette deck and a Tascam CD recorder and 2 pairs of bookshelf speakers - 1 pair of Elac Debut 6.2 and 1 pair of Fluance Signature Series Surround HiFi Bookshelf speakers. Just received a new pair of Elac Debut Reference speakers to "replace the Flus" as the B speakers. The Denon accomodates A and B speakers separately and simultaneously to fill the finished basement studio with sound. I'm interested in a possible upgrade to the Denon (which was probably a hasty purchase because I don't really use the Video aspects of the Receiver at this time), by this combo from Iota . Can a speaker switch box be added in order to add the second B speakers to this system? Would that affect the power delivery and or sound , if 2 pairs are played simultaneously? Thanks for your informative KZbin videos. Be safe all.....

Thomas I don't think this was "simplified like crazy" or much at all.Just concise.It comes down to trade off's and balance.Then there is your mood.Or even collective mood.An example of this I think is Klipsch.Nobody was talking about them at all but maybe due to being bored with what you had out there and as you mentioned a moving pendulum of taste but all you heard was "Colored","Cuppy" etc.Now it's all superlatives like "alive","fast"etc.I think a realm value of your reviews is you always note what you like among say tweeters (Soft Dome vs Metal).It reminds us all of the major differences and helps the newbie figure out why some products are of a group ion terms of sound.As always great work

@ThomasAndStereo4 жыл бұрын
Problem with cables is that it is a question of matching. Also it invites war in the comment section.
@ThoughtAhead4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I already realized that matching is everything for getting the sound you want. And I also saw your other not-review where you share your 'discovery' of expensive cables. So no war inviting here. Then a different kind of question. What do you think of Yamaha A-S2100 as a 'universal' or base amp (I know, speaking audiophiliac there is no such thing as one-size-fit-all, nonetheless, a word from you would help!) and what floor speakers could you recommend to look at to get a full bodied well detailed sound (treble, mids, bass) with really good imaging. To give you a clue, I'm not keen on Klipsch for being too bright and clear-sounding without enough imaging, on the other hand, Elac sounds to me too neutral and not quite airy. For instance, what do you think of Triangle Borea Bro 8? I listen mainly to classical, jazz, rock, ethnic. Thank you!

I fundamentally disagree that gear from the 70s was all about neutrality. Most amplifiers and receivers from that era have a smooth/warm/bassy tilt, especially stuff like Marantz and Sansui. Folks - if your speakers are rated 8 Ohms - do try connecting the SA3 to the PA3 in 'normal' stereo mode so both pair of speaker cables in to the PA3 and the both little switches on 'stereo' - i found this configuration produced an all-round better sound-stage, with better bass depth and clarity than the 'mono' bridged mode as shown in all these videos and in the manual. If you don't really need the extra watts to your speakers - mine are 88db - then give this normal configuration a go - you may be surprised.
@michaels8404 жыл бұрын
I agree that this is indeed a neutral amplifier. I know it is not very expensive, but you do get a great amplifier for the price. My speakers have a sensitivity of 87 db and are 4 ohms. They are on the bright side, though the bass is pretty good (subjective). I knew I wanted an amp that would be neutral to warm. Since I'm very eclectic in my music tastes I leaned more to neutral. I find the SA3 delivers that. Another way to show neutrality (IMHO) is start raising the volume. With higher volumes do the highs get tinny, do the lows get thumpy? Even at high volumes (98 db on my SPL meter) the sound was very clean to me.

@batero27 It was a long and winding road including reprogramming attempts and returns beginning in January and finally resolved now the end of May. You have to be persistent with Ian and he eventually fixed it, but it wasn't the greatest customer service experience I've ever had. I think Ian was just "bent over" on this issue by his manufacturer in China and he can't figure out a fix. All that said, you can't beat the quality vs value of these units anywhere in the world. The PS Audio Sprout 100 came close, but lacked the muscle and features. It did match the IotaVX at low volumes. The NAD D3045 sounded muddy to me, especially at low volume levels.

I love vintage gear and that is what I started my quality sound journey with. Harman Kardon and Sansui are my favorite however none of them are neutral sounding in my opinion. Some sound better than others but not neutral at all. Thats everyone's own definition. Class D would be most neutral sounding in my opinion and often not very good sounding unless you get way up in price.

I`m just a begginer in this HI-FI world but I do play electric guitar for like 12-15 years. In our world tube amps are way to go, and most iconic amps are heavily voiced like Fender (bell like highs with rolled down middle and bass) and Marshall with pronounced mids with circuit that produces iconic tube breakup distortion. I suppose benefit of neutrally balanced amp can be ability to play high variety of music from classical to blues, jazz and rock.

Hi Thomas! I have watched both your review of this unit as well as Zero Fidelity's, and as a result I find myself leaning toward it as an upgrade. I do have one question, however, that I'm hoping you can help me with. Do you consider the phono stage and dac in this unit to be sufficient, or is it necessary to use separate components for these? Thanks!
@ThomasAndStereo5 жыл бұрын
Hi Denis, It all depends what you are coming from to be consider an upgrade. The dac is ok but of course, like ALL component in this price range, you can always do better. Is it decent, yeah, it is. Meaning, I have used it's dac for extend periods being ok with it. Keep in mind, you need optical, coaxial or bluetooth to use it's dac. I never tried the phono stage, sorry.
@denniswade67275 жыл бұрын
@@ThomasAndStereo Thanks for the reply. Right now I only have a Yamaha RS202 receiver, so I know the integrated amp would be an upgrade. I'm using the dac in a Bluesound node 2 for digital via the rca inputs, so I guess using optical or coaxial would most likely be an improvement also.I have just returned to vinyl because of rediscovering a love for the sound. I'm a senior living on a fixed pension, so it takes time for me to prepare for even small upgrades.Music has always meant so much to me, however, so I'm doing what I can to achieve good enjoyable sound with what I can afford.
@ThomasAndStereo5 жыл бұрын
Hi Denis. I had the Yamaha AS801 and I personally prefer the sound and musicality of the SA3 more. If you are using a bluesound node 2 via RCA, it means you are using the DAC inside that unit. I would guess that unit is as good if not better than the SA3 dac. Afterall, that streamer is about the price of the whole SA3 unit. Vinyl, there is something about it that digital simply cannot replace. One day I should plug in my turntable with the SA3 to try since I do get a lot of question on it's phono stage. It will have to wait as I am working on the Atoll IN30 review as well as the Sprout 100. In fact you should wait for it if you are not in a rush because I will give you something to think about with the Atoll review. The good part is that it has a return period for the SA3 so its a safe buy.

Natural sounding system is the system that can play jazz very well. If someone make a natural sounding system for hip hop it will sound too bassy for rock and if he does the same for rock it will sound too dark for classical and if he does the same for classical it will sound too bright for jazz. Jazz is the sweet spot if you really want to have a reference of what natural sound is. Of course the tracks and mastering will vary greatly but I am generally speaking here.

Agree, a universal system that sounds natural with all kinds of recordings does not exist. Even within a single genre. For example, let's take something simple like pop music: if you tune your system to sound neutral with 80s pop it will sound boomy on modern pop records.

Excellent video. Even though it is a neutral system, you do have tone controls. So if you're feeling like a little more base is needed for a particular recording you can adjust that correct? Thomas, I bought the SA3 . I am intrigued with Emotiva's A-300 Amp . It is more powerful that IOTA's PA3. Reviewing both "stacks": IOTA and Emotiva , here and with Zero (Sean) and Cheapaudioman (Randy)..... Everybody seems to lean toward IOTA. My question is: would adding the Emotiva A-300 amp mixed with the IOTA SA3 Preamp work ? When a Preamp and amp of the same maker or different maker, does the marriage increase the power of the stacked units increase as a combined power delivery? I like the power ratings of the Emotiva vs the IOTA and the pricing (cost) . Yes, the separate Stacks look well together vs. mixing them, but other than Looks, does it affect the performance?
@ThomasAndStereo3 жыл бұрын
If you buy the A300, it will be hook up differently. Meaning you will be using SA3 only as a preamp and A300 as poweramp. If you buy a PA3, the way to connect it will be different and it will be more like a monobloc. I personally would go for PA3 if more power is what you are looking for and more 'punch'. It is just not the watts, it's the quality of watts. The combo does elevate the performance but the sound does change a bit. What do you find missing in your system?

The Receiver overheated after playing CDs for an hour or so. I learned of the warnings of Not To Do That.... You will fry your amp because of low impedance load. @@ThomasAndStereo Hi Thomas, In response to this comment 9 months ago, I did obtain the PA3 and the Emotiva A300. So now I have the SA3 connected to the PA3 and that in turn connected to the A300. Not sure what you mean by Monobloc? I use this configuration as the ZONE 2 to my Denon DRA-800H Receiver. It is Overkill for sure, but I wanted to relay this story to you and to the others who may view the comments. The Denon has a ZONE 2 Preout to allow to play the sources form the Denon to another AMP. I use the 2 systems in the same Finished Basement "Studio" I created in the COVOID Hibernation in 2020 - 2021. I have 2 separate pairs of Speakers connected to the Denon in the rear of the Basement (1 pair of Fluance Signature Series HiFis, and 1 Pair of Elac DBR 62s) each to the 2 Channels (A & B) on the Denon and a Monmoprice 60 Watt SW. The other system [IOTA & Emotiva] are connected as follows: PA3 to 1 pair of Elac DB 62s (not the Reference model as the other); the Emotiva connected to KEF Q350s - in the front of the "studio" . Sometimes I play 1 system & sometimes the other and then I play them simultaneously - WOW , Concert Hall Compatibility !!. I'll do this to play My Music when I play Drums - a resurrected retirement Hobby after a50 Year Hiatus. I'm 70 YO , retired in May of this year. I have many spinal issues causing much Chronic Discomfort, but I'm trying not to have this stop me form this enjoyment. I posted on Sean's IOTA site the following situation that occurred this past week. I inadvertently changed the Volume level; on the DENON ZONE 2 to the Max (98). Then, while streaming Spotify music, I heard Raspiness, Fuzziness form the IOTA system. Initially it played well then it became fuzzy , unclear. I thought it was the Stream , but when I connected the Denon system it was perfectly clear (and quite Impressive I will say). Then I switched speakers, they crackled and then the Left Channel on the SA3 went out. Turned it off, let it sit for 10 minutes, then restarted and the left channel was back, but then went out again. Took the SA3 off line, [which was acting as a Preamp for the ZONE 2 connection], connected the ZONE 2 Preout form the Denon directly to the Emotiva, and Holy Sh*t.. it almost Blew the Roof off the house. I am very Lucky it did not Blow the speakers. I did not realize that the Emotiva had no way to regulate the Volume power from the Denon!! So, I lowered the Setup Volume on ZONE 2 to 80 form 98 , reconnected the SA3 & PA3 / and the Emotiva as previously described - the Fuzziness was Gone. It played magnificently (as an aside - the Emotiva connected to the KEF Q350s is awesome). However, the SA3 left channel is probably Blown.t does not function. Waiting to hear from IOTA about what to do as I am still under warranty. Additionally, I need to discover why the Remote Control for the Denon did not work to lower the volume on ZONE 2 without having to go into the Setup Menu.
