I've lost about 60 lbs on keto and have toggled between keto and low carb to maintain my weight. I think when keto became popular, a lot of keto snacks came out. Many of them are keto in name only and sabotaged the keto diet and people didn't lose weight or they over ate them. Keto works, you just got to keep the snacks in check.

Agreed. Keto works best when you eat whole, natural foods. Processed anything, even with the "keto friendly" label, I generally stay away from. One of the best things I got from keto was label reading.

no disagreement that one can be very healthy eating a keto or carnivore diet, but it's highly illogical to suggest that simply eating in some way that an ancestral creature ate is automatically healthy or optimal. pre-fire we ate everything raw, and I'd wager most regardless of school of dietary thought understand that cooked meat ultimately ends up with more nutrients being absorbable by our (relatively weak) digestive system. Rather than blindly assuming that older is automatically best, we should continue using that ball of protein and fat in our skulls to learn how our bodies function and continue untangling the giant web of factors that impact how to operate most optimally. What our ancestors were able to hunt/gather to avoid starving to death is not an intelligent lense through which to learn these things. Ancient bodies we discover all over the world had many of the same health and even specifically digestive issues we see in modern populations.

I've been researching this topic a lot, as a relative has schizoaffective disorder, and keto diets seem to help such folks. However, the restrictions are potentially an issue in terms of certain plant or berry health benefits, so I read the Dr. Gundry book on the keto code, and how we may be able to get many of the mitochondrial uncoupling benefits without needing to be strict keto all the time. The time restricted eating seems huge, as it guarantees ketosis for part of each day. My relative and I (for different reasons) have been doing this style of eating for some time now, with low carb meals that are perhaps still above 50 grams of carbs per day. It feels like a solid choice, allowing fermented foods, and a touch more dairy, etc. Some folks may need strict carnivore/keto to heal gut issues or loose fat, but for hard gainers/those on the thin side, this feels most appropriate for now. BTW, your channel has been an outstanding resource over the years. As a college instructor and former PhD scientist, I share tips/your videos with students regularly (as part of my "cognitive hygiene" tips). Nice work Thomas!

I did Keto for 4 years straight, never felt better, but I have moved significantly over the last 2 years and was doing a more lenient version of keto mixed with SAD diet, my health has suffered. I’ve been back on strict keto for a month and man, I’m glad I took that break. It made me realize how amazing Keto is and how it impacts my life in so many beneficial ways. My gut feels great, no more yeast overgrowth and less fatigue. Also, I’ve missed eating for nourishment and not having the stress of what to eat. As someone who has suffered with ED, keto has made my relationship with food feel healthy again.

keto never left for me - but to the point here, I use it as a tool to manage my bodyfat percentage, not a 365 lifestyle. For general maintenance I still feel best with a lower carb diet but the main focus that I can sustain is more around portion control (only eat meals when actually hungry, no snacks), protein priority, clean food sources, and cutting out or at least minimizing foods that cause inflammation for me specifically. I also actively work to keep gut microbiome happy.

Just started Keto, I am one week in. I hit Ketosis today. Because I am only one week in, I remember vividly how I felt a week ago, compared to how I feel today and the difference is huge. I take archery lessons once a week since the end of January. I would shoot my arrows, retrieve them, and have to sit for a minute to regain energy. Today, just one week later, I didn't have to sit once, and stayed an extra half hour to practice, again with no resting. I haven't felt this level of energy for a LONG time. I am hoping that this stays, and increases with weight loss but I am definitely doing this for the long haul.

Keto, Carnivore, Vegan, all seem to have tremendous benefit in the short term, but results drop off after long periods. Maybe the issue is that we look at these as separate "lifestyles" but they are actually all pieces of the same optimal system? I'm starting to think seasonal eating is the optimal behavior. Something like: Winter-Carnivore with regular fasting Spring-Keto Summer-Vegan, or generally low protein Fall-Keto

I don't find a keto/low carb lifestyle hard to maintain. I have maintained my 50 pound weight loss for almost 5 years and, like Emily and Sarah, I would say I am "technically" keto and go off occasionally...I have found that a 80/20 balance (80% clean keto and 20% not-so-much on occasion) keeps me from feeling deprived. And if you know how to cook, you can make practically anything low carb or keto.

Before doing keto I was 300 pounds and my triglyceride levels were high but after doing keto for a year I lost 130 pounds and my triglyceride levels were lower than the average range. I also noticed that my memory improved and my metabolism became much faster. However I noticed that when I would work out while Aneto I would be fatigued after but ever since stopping keto and adding some carbohydrates before or after my workout I noticed that I tended to perform better and I wasn't tired after the workouts so based on my personal experience I think keto is ideal for weight loss but not necessarily the best for bodybuilding.

Great video as always. May I add some clarification about statistical significance. It has nothing to do with the expectation of the researchers nor physiological relevance. It’s simply a measure of the risk that an intervention shows a result by coincidence. If P=0.05 it means there is a 5% risk we got these results despite that the intervention had no effect. You can also reverse it and say we are 95% confident this intervention is working. Ironically the larger group the easier to reach statistical significance. Therefore, in particular in large studies, you may have a statistical significant outcome that isn’t physiological relevant. The change is too small in absolute values.

I'm in my mid 60's, way over weight. As of last summer, gout showed it's ugly head. Plus I have an autoimmune disease. So weight loss while avoiding gout was the priority. First I started intermittent fasting (12/12, soon after 16/8) Started exercising 40-60 minutes a day in 20 minute increments. Then adjusting diet. Turns out, I was doing the keto thing without knowing. From mid-June thru mid September, I lost 60 pounds of fat. Then the eating months hit. I've continued to exercise an average of 30 minutes a day, 7 days a week, trying to eat healthy. After this weekends activities of New Years eating, I'll start back to keto style eating and become more strict on intermittent fasting once again. I haven't put on any weight, but still feel blah. It's not a New Years resolution, but a 2 1/2 month break from being so strict. I'll still have a cheat day on Saturdays for 24 hours though.

I have proven time and time again that keto works for me. However, it is best when it is an ideally balanced form of keto. And by that I mean ADD GREENS! When I regularly add collard, turnip, & mustard greens, and broccoli and spinach (cooked) to my meals, limit my snacking (foraging), don't overdo the fats (e.g. excessive nuts or butter), don't overdo the protein (e.g. huge steaks or megaservings of chicken), stay away from sugar, bleached flour, and all processed artificial foods, ALL my numbers improve. It may not be perfect, but keto is so MUCH better for my overall health than the carb-rich, junk-food/GMO-reliant, inflammatory "diet" I had been accustomed to, which was making me ill in so many ways.

I am an undiagnosed type 2 diabetic; no, not pre-d. I used an a1c test kit that was sent to my husband, because he got his done regularly, anyway. I showed at 7.6! But I was so carb addicted, I couldn't change right away. Then my mom died May 28, 2023, and I went through depression- eating pizza and other junk, sleeping and little else. Then I decided to change my depression: I fasted! Then OMAD, which hurt my stomach terribly. Then I found Thomas. I can handle being hungry during the day but not at night, so my weight loss is slow, but it's coming along! I'm probably the slowest keto dieter around, but I'm finally out of the 200s for the first time in a decade, still losing VERY slowly (1 pound a week). BUT MY BLOOD SUGAR IS UNDER CONTROL, with NO medication!!! 💊 💊 💊 😊

I think for most, in time it’ll literally turn out that fat quality is #1, followed closely by protein quality, then fibre quality and timing with appropriate natural carbs like fruit before exercise. And bone broths, electrolyte rich broths, and select low inflammatory vegetables with final meal of the day before 6pm. It’s so simple but I feel for 85% of the population this general thing will turn out to be the headiest possible outcome, natural sources of course. Very limited over processed foods, the saturation of which determined by intensity.

One you reached your goal weight 'carb cycling' should kick in for the maintenance weight, also change up 16:8 intermittent fasting midday main meal and light supper to protein brunch and midday light meal. This is working for me, also less reliance of having to target micronutrient supplements than while having bad nutritional information in the name of keto. There are supplemented nutrition facts that work well for us all. I am referring to fake keto recipes and artificial sugar substitutes and fake keto labeled products. These things are destructive to our efforts, and we have to get away from that to really benefit from what we are doing.

Tom since you love the mediterranean diet so much I like to know what do you mean by it. Mainstream pushed it as a mostly vegan type diet heavy in unprocessed cereals, legumes, vegetables, and fruits. Avoid meat and eat fish once in awhile. Dairy seems to okay once in a awhile as well. Also avoid fat as much as possible. Is this your diet?

Regarding Joaquin Phoenix's highly restrictive pre-Joker diet, David Letterman asked him "Did you ever get used to It?" Joaquin's incredulous reply "No David, I did not." Weight loss will always involve deprivation, it will always require willpower. There are strategies to mitigate the deprivation so that it isn't unbearable, but you can never avoid deprivation completely. And the more weight you're trying to lose, the older you are AND the longer you've spent being overweight, the harder, the more tortuous it gets. Just like there are alcoholics who have to swear off alcohol for the rest of their lives, there's folks trying to lose weight who effectively have to reach the decision that their favorite foods have to become a once a year event, at most. Effectively, it's cold turkey.

For energy is quie the opsite. Keto increases energy needed for movement thus decrease exercise efficiency. That is why is not recommended for marathon runners and why they use a carb loading protocol before and during the race. If ou want to do keto for the mitochondria benefit then yes, and actually just a couple of days of carb loading can offset the negatives of keto regarding exercise economy.

There are plenty of pros to that, but for me the con is, in those 4 month I went from not having any kind of problems with my gallbladder to having bad gallbladder. Any advice on how I could stay on Keto and 18/6 intermittent fasting and reverse this? Thanks!

Yeah, people with gallbladder issues can't handle a lot of fat at once and have to slowly increase their fat and increase their eating windows. This also happens with people that have had gastric bypass surgery. Short daily eating windows don't work for these people and they need several small meals a day

Hey what is everyone's macro's? I've seen another video he posted a year ago that says we can now shoot for protein between 30-50% of our caloric intake while maintaining the 5-10% for carbs, leaving the rest for fat calories.. I been on the traditional 70% calories from Fat, 25% from protein and 5% fat and it's worked great for me. My only reason for looking to switch it up is to try and put on some lean muscle mass now to maybe help with the belly fat I have left..

Hi, a med student here for a quick note on statistical significance. The 'significance' in question does not mean that there was a significant (read: dramatic) change in the numbers measured. Statistical significance refers to the probability of the obtained result being measured by chance. So a statistically significant result doesn't tell you anything about the number you measured but instead tells you that there is only a very small probability that the number you measured was the result of chance. A statistically insignificant result on the contrary means that you can't rule out that the result was measured as such purely by chance. In short, it is a measure of how much the obtained result implies a causal relationship and not random chance.

Hey, I have a question for all those here doing keto. I am not struggling with maintaining keto, but it feels impossible for me to eat enough calories in a day. I am fairly active and struggle to reach the 1600-1700 calories. Which results in huge weight loss and I am worried about how this will go if I do keto for a longer period. Dairy has been suggested but I swapped to soja-based products (a lot fewer calories in there) because it makes me feel better. So are there other products I could at to my shopping list to help out here, besides eating bigger portions. Because when doing Keto I am barely hungry.

I love be on keto.I love the food and now that i´ve been on keto for 9 months i still keep finding good options to grow the variety of foods i can eat and what tastes good. I have new ideas what i have to test as i have time to do it. Even at this Christmes time, actually last week period i lost 2,2 lbs (1kg) even that i ate alot. I just ate everything keto. I still haven´t got cravings for sweets but i got awsome idea to make keto friendly chocolate that will tast good. Becouse if you buy 95-99% dark chocolate, it tastes horrible. But have to try to mixed with unsalted butter, lactose free cream and some erythritol (0 carb sweetener). If i can make it taste good i will mix it nuts and make bars from it.

I do think Keto is great, but it’s soooooo boring long term. Ben Bikman and Jason Fung both admit that they don’t follow a strict Keto diet. They eat low carb-ish, whole, unprocessed foods. If those two guys follow that eating protocol, then I’m going to say that it’s pretty good for maintaining health!

it is kind of no surprise that keto diet has those effects, shown @ . Yet, the 2nd meta-analysis, shown @4:40, shows that LBM (lean body mass) also decreased by -0.63kg, while fat mass sill decreased more, so body composition improved. I did not read those 18 studies, but it is quite likely that the participants did not adjust their resistance training, if they did some at all. And yes, brain health is largely dependent on avoiding sugar, fructose and too much carbs (where "too much" is individual, but somewhere around 1/3 of calories). Would love to see an interview with Dr. Lustig. .)) About keto and medical conditions check out the channel of Nick Norwitz, MD.

I started keto 3yrs ago. brilliant fast results (10kg drop in 6weeks). Strategies for long term success. Hiit and sprinting works very well! ( + eat real whole foods! the new mantra)I am now almost complete carnivore and I am satisfied. No cravings. Also I never counted anything, Palm sized protein is one thing i used in the beginning, being carnivore changes that. Satiety is the key, if you are eating the right types of food that is really all it takes. If your brain won't let you walk past a cake shop I am sorry but this won't work for you.

There is a healthy version of Keto that probably a good percentage of the (especially) American population need, including myself. Metabolomics will probably determine the length of any focused type of eating style in the long run. So, there may need to be some adjustments for those that have been doing keto for years and have conquered some metabolic issues. Like you said, they may need some additional nutrition. Agree. 👍
