Same. Not intermittent fasting and not often but it really clears my head. Every time I start a fat loss phase, and occasionally throughout if I start feeling crave-y I’ll do a 24 hour fast and remind myself that being a little hungry for a little while just isn’t a big deal.

It's funny because Thomas was one of the main reasons I started out my weight loss or health journey with a keto diet, even though I had skimmed through the RP audiobook at that time. Now, I've based my nutrition more around RP and find it way more sustainable, approachable, and so much less restrictive. Not to bash keto, it worked for me when I was severely overweight and not at all physically active. When I started adding training and exercise, though, I just could not stick to keto for any significant amount of time. I'll take my oats, fruit, and eat my cake, too.

I had much the same experience. Working out fasted was fantastic - until it wasn't. My fitness and activity level hit the point where I need the carbs because I'm going to burn them, and my liver can't keep up. And yes, eating is annoying! Also people dont really understand that our body not just boosts certain states from 0-100%. Autophagy is severely overrated and the whole idea of 16 hour fasting windows is based on a study with mice, which have a way faster metabolism than us. For real autophagy benefits you probably would have to fast several days...but this comes with other problems, so IF this is a healthy approach heavily depends on every persons own situation.

Depends on what you want out of it. If you want it more for detoxing and cellular regeneration than fasting is the best. If you want it more for muscle to replace fat that working out is the best. A big dummy would just find a way to balance the two.

I always had great leg genetics and hit them hard because I was good at it. For years my bench would always stagnate at beginner to intermediate while my squat and deadlift have worked up to elite levels. Now I literally have to stop doing legs besides very light/cardio level to move my upper body numbers. Such a light bulb

The first 30 days I did cardio, lighter weights (50-60 % of max) to not increase the hernia too much. I lost 22 lbs. Post hernia surgery, October 17th, I was sedentary for 2weeks and back walking on my treadmill day 15. 10 weeks in and I have lost 40 lbs. Amazing. So my own test showed that both together works best for health but a caloric deficit, a 18/6 feeding window and No Carbs works Best. Tried Keto, ok but Carnivore is the best .

The section about MRV definitely hit home as someone who has tried many different powerlifting and hypertrophy programs. I see all these posts talking about low volume high intensity outputs being the best without ever factoring in specificity for strength sport application or bothering to differentiate between individual muscle types. This is why there is a huge difference between juiced up lifters and naturals, naturals generally do better with higher frequency and lower intensity simply due to the amount of damage incurred to the both the muscles and joints/ligaments. My squat max stalled for a long time and what pushed me through the plateau was switching to a squat centric program where I was squatting 3 times a week of varying intensity/volume and keeping the rest of my training volume reduced for a few months. My body adapted incredibly fast and actually reduced some of the other issues I was having by trying to cram too much volume into all areas.

An excellent heart-to-heart, wide-ranging and very relevant, and very humorous discussion between two guys who walk the walk. I'm age 78 and I still regularly lift and run and swim and bike, etc. and as a result I still enjoy a high level of overall fitness for any age thank you very much. I'd like to chime in a word for what I like to call "vital longevity". If you take any kind of decent care of yourself you have a good probability of reaching age 85 or beyond. This means that you have a good chance of spending 20 years or more over the age of 65 and 10 years or more over the age of 75. Think about it a moment and weep. You will then be officially "OLD". And I can positively guarantee that your #1 priority training goal will not be hypertrophy, no indeed, your #1 priority will be to be pain- and injury-free and to remaining pain- and injury-free for as long as you can. So here's the take-home. When you look in the mirror to admire your muscular gains when you're young and middle-aged, look real hard at your reflection and over your bulging delts you will see an 80+ year old old guy. Tell me, is he fit and strong and smiling and giving you a thumbs up because you trained prudently for the long-haul, or is he in decrepit shape, bowed by chronic joint and back pain, depressed and giving you the finger because you had to be the macho "train through pain" tough guy, didn't you?

Ebbing and flowing between keto/carnivore has felt great many times in my life, but when I'd introduce carb meals again I would inevitably spiral out of control! EVERYTIME! Uncontrolled binges where I am not even enjoying the food... just demonically cramming it into my mouth to the point where I can barely move and am sweating from underneath my eyes. When I am 25g of carbs/day or less I am so calm and clear... I can think and talk clearer... I learn better and am more productive. My progress has been stagnant if not downright declining week to week for the last month or so, and now I'm absolutely confident I'm going beyond my MRV systemically. My total weight training volume, cardio, added summertime work hours and stress....it's too much. I'm going to drop down to maintenance level next week and see how I feel at the end of it, then start adding sets back each week until I find that happy medium. It's much easier for me to push hard and overdo it then it is to take a break, which seems like exactly what I need. Thanks again guys

One thing that doesn't come up very often but I tell young kids all the time is that if no one is paying you to be physically awesome, you have to find a way to be happy in the gym after most of your gains are done. I'm, 48 and absolutely love lifting because I mostly just improv what feels most recovered because I have been pretty jacked for more than a decade. If I came in and went absolutely crazy for a year, I would barely change but I would probably hate it. I'm happy to be the old guy at the gym who still pushes weight but does so with a smile on his face.

Why not place the mic booms on the other side and get a cleaner take of the participants?

I visit Dr. Mike for bodybuilding and sport-specific knowledge and jokes, and I go to Mr. Delaeur for nutrition. This is an incredible combination. Thank you both!

I knew there was not going to be a 50 minute video without Dr. Mike making some form of gay joke or pass at Thomas. 2 Excellent channels.
