Hiking and landscape photography in the Lake District is a great recipe and it's not often that I wish I hadn't bothered going out with my camera for landscape photography, but today felt like a complete fail. After a beautiful hike of the Mosedale Horseshoe, I decided to return to the Lake District and do part of the hike again. This time I would bring with me my Fuji GX617 Panorama film camera. The conditions weren't great for landscape photography and for some reason I was making mistake after mistake on every image I shot, mistakes I should not be making. This day turned in to one huge frustration, but the end result might not be as bad as I first thought.

Happens to the best of us. I'm often reminded of Jim McKay's "Thrill of Victory, and the Agony of Defeat" ... without the lows, how could we appreciate the highs? In this day and age of phoney, superficial, contrived 'successes' and fragile egos, Sir Thomas, your humility and humanity, on display, are what is needed. I salute you.

A few years back, I was feeling down so I went to take photos of a church at sunrise to get me more energised. Got up at 4am, drove half an hour and climbed a hill to get there. I wandered about a bit to find exactly where I wanted to be. When I opened my camera bag, I realised that I had left the camera in the house. I had taken it out for something and forgotten to put it back before I walked out the door. That day, I was ready to give up photography altogether. It was a real low. Especially because I was there to pick myself up. Shit happens, man. You just do better next time and the last time becomes a story you can laugh about with your friends.

Just got back from a photographic disaster trip myself Tom. My son and I went to Sandringham with the intention of shooting some nice autumnal scenes in the forest. Day one was mainly a reccy but with my camera to catch anything that jumped out at me. Nothing did, light was horrible all day, forgot my beanbag for the forest floor macros I had planned as well. No good shots. Had an early start planned on day 2 to get some nice golden hour shots in the forest. What actually happened was at the end of day 1 we got refused entry at our campsite because I didn't have my toilet tent with me (who knew!?)......Drove home. This video was exactly what I needed, thank you for being so honest, you have restored my faith in making the effort to take photos :)

The way I use that light meter is meter the sky and save the reading, then meter the shadows and save the reading, move the shadow marker to the correct exposure zone for the film you are using, that will give you your shutter speed. Look at where the highlight reading has moved to on your scale and add an Nd grad to bring the highlight into the range of the film, if needed. Going to the extreme dynamic range of the film can cause colour shifts or muddy colours. Try using a low contrast film (high dynamic range) like Ektar 100 in a high dynamic scene and a high contrast film (low dynamic range) like Velvia 50 in low contrast scenes. Learning to read the films data sheets will help you massively in knowing the limits of films and when colour shifts happen, hope this helps. Thanks for the great content, I really enjoy your adventures.

I'm happy that you pulled some great images from the trip in the end. And kudos for continuing sharing your experiences with film. You remind us, and educate those who are too young to remember, how fortunate we are to have all the built in tools of digital cameras. Your image (from your earlier hike) of Wast Water and the Screes below Illgill is beautiful but did send shivers down my back . I am one of the many who naively walked that side of the lake two months ago only to find it's literally kilometers of scree, scrambling and climbing. I'm fat and fifty, 2 stone overweight and carried a 13 kg camera bag, so I nearly expired about 6 times. ;-)

Excelent video, very educational, wonderful location and weather. The best advice I got when switching from digital to 5X4 film was to print out a card check-list of every step in the process and use it every time until it became second nature. It has cut my mistakes greatly. Good luck in the future. I bought a wonderful 5X4 from Great Britain, Hove in East Sussex, and am very pleased with it.

Don't be so hard on yourself mate. I think the images capture the mood of the day and that special atmosphere you get in the mountains during a cloudy day very nicely. I know exactly how you feel, I am just like you. But try not to focus on the outcome or on what could have been, but enjoy the process. After a lot of years, I still struggle with that very thing, but more and more I manage and I found it to be the key to true happiness in life :)

Nice effort Tom... Every serious nature photographer has felt the same frustrations and anxieties as you. As a wildlife and landscape photographer, I can recall outings where I have experienced the most interesting behaviors and light and failed to realize my vision. As you stated later in the video, we need to embrace these days as that is when we grow the most. I admire your efforts to shoot w/ MF panorama camera. I used to shoot with the Hasselblad XPan and I loved working with that camera because it offered a unique way of viewing the world, however cameras like these to do not support frantic photographic moments. They are ideal for those time when you hunker down at a location and plan out the "one" shot... bravo for you willingness to share your challenges. Regards, bruce

I remember gauping over that 6x17 camera as a teenager. It was used by so many of the great landscape photographers printed in magazines like Practical Photography in the 90s, guys like David Noton, John Hedgecoe and Charlie Waite (I can't remember if they specifically had that camera, but it was that era). Funny how old fashioned it feels now, but as expected, the images look stunning!

Well, Thomas, I watched this video after I saw a link on a 6x17 group page. I should say I watched it with a big grin because after shooting a Fuji GX617 for well over 20 years I know exactly how it feels when you screw up. One thing this camera will teach you is that you need to slow down and think about a methodical approach. Mistakes with it are expensive and frustrating, but when you finally gel with it, you'll produce images that you won't create with any other camera or format. Just a couple of observations: 1. When loading a film keep some tension on the roll with your left thumb as you wind on to the start mark. If you don't tension the film, sooner or later you'll be trying to remove a 'fat roll' from the camera and that isn't much fun with cold fingers. Even less fun when you find that the film is fogged! 2. I'm not sure your centre ND filter is the correct Fuji one as originally supplied with the SWD 90mm, it looks too large in diameter from the brief glimpses I could see in your video. The correct Fuji filter has a 1-stop compensation factor, not 2-stops, as you seem to be advocating and this will make a huge difference on transparency film. 3. With black and white film, you can use 77mm screw-in filters with the centre ND in situ. A Heliopan 22 is what I would have used in the shooting situation you were in. Anyway, take something from or ignore my comments as you wish! I enjoyed the video very much, maybe see you on the hill sometime!

Hello Tom. An honest video about the realities of landscape photography. Sometimes it all comes together and sometimes it doesn't. Anyone that has spent any time in the landscape with a camera will be familiar with the "oh my goodness, look over there" moments, followed by the scrabble, followed by the disappointment. Don't beat yourself up sir over making mistakes, we are all only human. As long as we apply the learnings then mistakes can actually be positive in driving us all to improve. Stay safe sir.

To spare yourself the double exposures with a film camera, you have to make a habit of either winding on after a shot, or just before a shot. And stick to it. It's easy to be distracted and not remember.

*Always* wind on, and *always* have film in the camera... sometimes better the "wrong" film, than none at all...and, if needed, it is often possible to "unload" the film with black exposures, and load in the the "right" film...yes, I have personally learned those lessons, and it really hurts when you are 5000 miles from home, once-in-a-lifetime shot, and you forgot to wind on, or, in my case, had the camera set for 220, and a 120 film in the camera... 10 beautiful images that exist only in memory. Hard lessons of a landscape photographer!

I find the hardest time in Landscape photography is coming to a place you have already shot before. Because the composition that first to come to mind are gone, and now you have expectations of finding an even better shot. Often that leaves you with a bitter disappointment as you can't seem to realize the image that you are picturing in your mind or comparing it to an image you have already taken. I am trying to find through film the realization that each experience of life is a gift, and that is why we call it the present.

I think all the photos turned out really well, but honestly I think the third and fourth photos were superb. You may think it was a mistake to forget to put the filter on but it looks really good with that moody vignette and great contrast, and you may think there was a better scene a few minutes earlier for that last shot but that moment in time is just gorgeous as it is. You’re being too hard on yourself!

6x17 has roughly the same diagonal as 5x7 sheet film. The "crop factor" for both compared to 35mm/FF is .2x, which makes conversions to 35mm focal lengths easy: divide by 10 and multiply to 2.
@MichaelGAubrey
@MichaelGAubrey 3 жыл бұрын
Additionally, comparing depth of field to 35mm works the same: f/32 gives about the same DOF as f/6.4 for 35mm.

Also Thomas, I think every one of us film photographers has had a day like yours. After all those troubles, I would be relieved to have even one image turn out as good as yours did.

We all have days like that. I once spent a whole day shooting around Ullswater only to find I’d forgotten to put film in the camera. Only did that once!!

Love it Tom...reminds me of your polarising filter rolling down off the summit of Catbells in the snow !!...problem was you had your "hold my beer" moment at 08:30...great thing about this camera is "it's very easy, very simple, like a point n shoot!!..." The Photography Gods were never going to let you get away with that !! :-). and never yelled so much at a vlog before "TOM...your nd filter, YOUR ND FILTER !!"...followed later by "Tom, you've left your boot open, ...TOM !! YOUR BOOT IS OPEN !!"....was convinced you'd get back to a car on bricks with no interior ! :-) as the perfect end to a perfect day.. !!. Nothing better than a reality check video :-)

mate! that last shot, while I know you said it could have been better if you had a different composition, it absolutely is perfect in my eyes. beautiful work!

The shots came out well in the end however. I’m reminded of 58 years ago shooting 50+ shots with a rangefinder camera of sports cars racing at Riverside, CA before I realized that my lens cap was on. 😩

Hello Tom, I too have had days where I am a complete photography muppet! However unlike you I don’t end those days with a beautiful, colourful pano at sunset, maybe there was better available but you weren’t there! The best camera is the one you have with you, the best time is during the period that you are there!

Oh Thomas.....what a brilliant video....honestly. So many of us are beginners, or even earning from our photography (I am in the green screen studio sports arena) and your videos are often a source of encouragement, guidance and tuition for those of us starting out with landscape photography. You know what? This video proves you are human and even someone as skilled as yourself can still have a bad day, much like we all do and a reminder that this, sadly, is quite normal. The key is brushing off and getting back on with it while learning from your mistakes. So thank you Thomas, as ever your content is much appreciated. PS, you mention the 2020 calendars, will you be signing them again this year?

I recognise all of that. Until 6 months ago I had a GX617 with 90 and 180 lenses and I loved the concept. Even took some good shots with it - Velvia 50 is stunning when run through that camera. The size and weight however mean that there is little room for anything else in your bag and you generally need a heavier tripod to do the format justice. Also the 6x17 format is difficult - as seen in your last shot of the sunset on the lake which wasn’t really what you thought was available. Ideally you might like some foreground but the narrowness of the image makes it harder to do that and keep enough sky etc in the upper part of the picture. The last straw for me was taking a series of shots up on Machrie Moor on Arran - great light, brilliant standing stones and atmospheric hills - when I had an inkling something was amiss. The clockwork sound of the 90mm’s leaf shutter operating at the slower speeds had gone missing - the shutter was broken and the last 4 films (16 exposures) were lost. Of course, like the fisherman and the one that got away, these were some of my best shots - ever! Short story long, I had the shutter fixed and traded the Fuji gear for a Hasselblad XPan with TTL metering so no worries about having the centre ND filter on or not (Thomas - why would you ever take it off the lens? Just leave it in place then there is only one mistake to be made - underexposure 😉). So now I am working with the XPan for my film panoramic shots. OK I lose a lot of resolution but get a lot more shots per film, the pano format is less extreme so can fit more subjects, it is much lighter/smaller, works for street shots and has the metering built in. But, like most of us, I am sure I will regret not keeping hold of the 617 especially once you have got to grips with yours and start turning out spectacular shots - imagine it in Iceland! Great work and keep up the humble bit - there can be too much ‘I’m a Fine Art photographer don’t you know’ videos out there.

Really loved the video! Great stuff! These are the mistakes, most people would try to hide. You did not. Thank you! The only thing I did not quite understand: Why don't you consider pushing or pulling the film?

Mistakes are human. That you make them makes anyone learning remember that mistakes happen and they happen to everyone. Perfection isn't always the best way to teach.

Very nice work. I like all the images, especially the one at 4:43 as it has great composition leading me to the image and the highlights on the ridge give it one more level of interest. This would be great as 90x60cm print. Well done!

Love your video mate, it’s breaking my heart that I sold my Hasselblad Xpan II watching this, but it had to go. I bought it for a trip to Spitsbergen, then a cruise to Greenland, inspired by Colin Prior, but could’nt face dragging a beast like the GX 617 up hills! The slides it produced are amazing, but still need to scan hundreds of them. I think it was the best 35mm camera ever made. My new dream camera is the Fujifilm GFX 50r with the 23mm wide angle.

I keep saying it. I enjoy watching your films because , unlike the AI photo effects you've mentioned previously , things are not perfect and there will be days when things don't work out - however good the conditions . This is reality truth and honesty . By the way, WHAT a camera!! Wow!!

I will watch this to the end, I promise. I still use my 1980 OM2n for street photography and I adore the quality of Ilford film. For anyone reading this, B&W film can be "pushed" or "pulled". In this case, I hope the overexposed film will be pulled to compensate for the lack of filter. I've been taking photographs for nearly 60 years and I still make mistakes :)
