This just might be my favorite. I especially connect with your advice. As an old man, I don't make difficult treks for various shots, but the joy of being outdoors in the wind and sun and even rain and waiting for different bird behavior and proximity are worth the day's effort. Of course getting a satisfying image is still the goal. Your messages talk to the outdoorsman and photographer in me. One of the reasons I'm glad you're on the planet.

I've been missing your camping videos and finally, it's spring again! And guess what! My 12 year old son came and asked me - can't we watch a video of that photography camping guy again? Has he done any new? :-D We watched this together, and both of us liked it very much . Can you imagine the joy I felt thinking of the possibility that my son also would become a photographer one day, and we could do this togehter? Thanks for the inspiration to us both! :-)

This was wonderful Thomas and such great timing for me. I’m making the long journey to the UK next week and plan to visit the Lake District for some landscape photography (and vlogging)! It’s such a beautiful area as you have showcased consistently through your videos. The shot you took of the mountain ridges fading away into the distance was fantastic. The light flooding the valley was stunning and the images you capture really took advantage of it. Loved the story at the end mate, it’s so true…enjoy the experience!

Well done, Tom. So much of landscape photography is stewardship and appreciation of our natural resources. In my experience, what makes the photo is not Lightroom or the lens, but the preparation, anticipation and peaceful quiet time with Mother Nature. Glad to see you out in the mountains again.

Thoms, I recently discovered your youtube page and I am thoroughly enjoying your videos and your philosophy of "just enjoy being out, the photographs will come." Here in western Montana, where we have a wealth of prime fly fishing rivers, we have a similar philosophy..."any day on the river is worth it." Getting out and enjoying the wonders of Mother Nature should be the main goal. Everything else, a nice catch of the day or a photo or two are just icing on the cake. The additional icing on the cake with your videos is seeing your thought process in composition, camera settings, etc. Thanks!!

Thomas, for the camera falling... I bring a thick plastic bag with me that originally came from the grocery store full of apples or oranges. I fill it with rocks that I find and hook it to the little hook at the bottom center of my tripod so that it hangs dead center between the legs of my tripod. This pulls the center of gravity down towards the ground and applies pressure to each of the legs. Then I dump out the rocks and move on. That way I don't have to carry any kind of weights. Or I just hang my backpack/bag on the hook under the tripod. I don't know if all tripods have that hook but all three of mine have it. Greatly stabilizes the tripod and keeps it from being top-heavy with the camera on it.

Look at military surplus rucksacks. They are quite rugged and with many supporting the molle type webbing one can attach other kit as needed. My base is a 30L bag I went to MFT to avoid the big lens and bodies. I can use a lighter tripod as well. The weather has been slow to warm up and such a late spring so enjoy it
