I use the chase method for my short hair on the sides and you have to take the comb downwards with the straightener, basically straighten it downwards and comb it back as far as the edges you just have to clamp them, I use a mini straightener for the edges. The comb just allows the hair a clean pass without missing strands or tangle and preventing heat on the hands if your sensitive, it also allows a direction for the hair.

During the blow dry step, I recommend blow drying with a round brush (instead of just random rubbing your fingers around and creating more frizz). The round brush should help to straighten the hair while drying it at the same time, which will make straightening the hair with a flat iron that much easier. Also recommend, putting more heat protection in after blow drying and before using the flat iron

I just used this technique and that is how youu get your hair to have that flat look. Without it my hair is still poofy, but loose and I look like an 80's rockstar.
