You are welcome sir. Yeah, I think most of us has gone down that street. Spending money, a lot of money on stuff that does not get the proper support or seams like a good deal and end up just costing more. I'm so happy with this, and to see how much effort has been put down into updates and future features are insane. So much great to look forward to. Yeah, I think we are into a down periode on internett at the moment. It just seams that there are so much bitterness or angry thoughts about everything. I guess media and all the shit that goes on makes people more hostile to each other. We need to turn that crap around. 🙏🏻

Ive been using DMD2 for a few years now here in the US and I brag about it to all my friends. I use the Tripletek T9pro since the DMD devices were not even available. Like you, I dumped the Zumo XT with the frustration of the Syncing and other issues like BT comms. Sure I have a few wish list items on the DMD, but I know that it is on the To-Do-List.Such as the sharing and saving of waypoints in GPX format vs Google maps url since many places in the US backcountry do not have mobile data. Thanks for a very nice video, I will share it with non-believers.

Thank you sir, and highly appreciated. Always nice when people are impressed by my creative outlet trough videos 🙌🏻 Well, I do think, after so many years with Garmin, I know exactly what I want and need in a navigational system. So it is easy to be impressed when everything just works. But on the other side, it is really easy to be disappointed when stuff does not work as planed. I did not spend too much time on the controller in this video, because you really don't need it for the system to work perfectly. Yes, it is an insanely useful addition to it all, and one of my key selling point for this. But I need to cover more of that in a stand alone video for the ones who have interest for it. I don't want to come off like you NEED to have the controller for all this to work. (if that make sense) I will also make a video where I try out roadbook for the first time and how well every thing works regarding that. I hope that more beginners find the joy in trying new stuff with their bikes in the future.

Unless you are a hardcore road rider, there is no point considering a Garmin unit. I really did not think to much about having the different options so available. I had the phone in my pocket, but every time you stop, you need to take it out, do a search etc. It just takes to much time and effort after a long day. Much better to have it easy accessible on the dash. Well, I might not be a fool, but I feel like it when I know that I have convinced others to jump on the Zumo train and it feels a little bit bad. But like you say, we learn, we become better and the worlds spins every minute. It looks like a nice alternative. Where I live in interior Alaska I need the satellite communication with the Inreach system, and the piece of mind having the SOS button on my Garmin Montana 700i. As there are many locations here without cellular service, and in this region the Inreach has better service than other satellite communication companies. So it can really depend on where one is traveling, on what system is preferred. I do wish there were more alternatives, so this is nice to see someone developing competition for Garmin. Thanks for the installation video, and I look forward to further reports on how it works for you.

This is a really god topic that is not addressed enough. With the new satellite communication with iPhone now, I'm not sure how that holds up against in reach? I know for a fact how well inreach works so that is a system you can rely on. I would would rather get a mini hanging on my body, than have it on the sat nav on the bike, but it is still an extra cost that you need to take into consideration. Damn, this is actually a topic I should consider doing a video about 🤔

@@tshansen Personally I have activated the iPhone SOS more than once when it was in my pocket using both button call method options. In both cases the phone was hot and angry so I was neither able to stop the SOS or even shutdown/reboot the phone. That was enough for me. I will not be using it again until I have very high confidence it cannot readily trigger a false alarm while just in my pocket on a ride. Regarding the 700i, the downside is that device is on your bike, if you get separated from your bike for some reason you may not be able to activate it. I always carry my mini on my person and somewhere I can actually reach it in case I get pinned under the bike (which has happened) or separated from the bike.

Great video. I agree with your comments, love that this exists and that one isn’t locked into mass market product like Garmin etc.. Garmin has been useful for years, started using them on moto’s since 2008 but it’s frustrating because it’s made as an auto unit with motorbike aspirations. Now with regard to DMD, the only issue I’ve run into, it’s not compatible with a rather large amount of bikes. Yes the basic software works just moving it around on a bike but, the engine parameters, cell connectivity and even with the Bluetooth dongle are expenses you shell out for only to find they don’t work with your particular motorbike. I have a newer KTM 500 that has an aftermarket ECU, the stock unit is way too lean. With the DMD Bluetooth connected, no parameters come out of the aftermarket ECU besides volts! This now leaves me with a choice between running a horrible running bike with stock ECU and full DMD access or a well running bike and 1/2 the DMD not working. 🤷🏻♂️ I’ve contacted DMD and they’ve tried several things to help. In the end, either I reprogram the stock ECU which is expensive and redundant given I’ve already spent money on a well running aftermarket ECU or I accept I can only use 1/3 to 1/2 the usefulness of the DMD software. 🫤 Keep in mind, this expense is only exacerbated if you don’t already have a compatible tablet or in my case the Garmin Tread Overland Edition. 😕 Again, I’m in full support of DMD and all the hard work their crew is putting behind it but your viewers should know the expensive heartbreak myself or others unfortunately have been dealing with.

I got my hands on a new (Norwegian) controller as well, so I can pair it when I ride my car, it can control my iPhone when bicycle. And it can also control this unit (trough bluetooth) I will most likely make a comparison between the two controllers I got to see what works best for my needs.

Evening Thomas, I think the wire connectors are called, Solder seal wire connectors. 👍 Garmin are so behind the times now, the processors they use in the units are very slow, where as all these new alternatives seem to work so much better. The DMD2 looks brilliant and the remote is a big bonus too. You could basically remove the Yamaha instrumentation, and just have the DMD2, although I guess you don’t get the mileage reading and the fuel and temperature gauges.

Solder is the right word, I thought it was to close to soldier 😂 thank you for adding this info Solder seal wire connectors... need to write that down. They are absolutely fantastic. Garmin is not even playing in the same field anymore. From what I can tell they have all their focus on watches. But what irritates me the most is how incredible slow and painful the syncing between the explorer app and the tread app is now. after the latest updates. It has rendered the unit useless for my needs. Maybe there is a way to set up the ODO to fit, I have not put to much attention to that yet, but a lot of it you could replace yes.

I use Locus Maps since a few years for 4x4 offroad tours. Now I bought a CRF 300 R and so I found DMD2 on KZbin. It´s the first NavSys other than LocusMaps that I´m interested in. Since 2 month I test it here and there with my old S20+ on the CRF. It has the potential to be my first choice for navigation for 4x4 and motorbike, I think I just need a little more time on, sry, off the road. What I miss is the adjustable automatic zoom depending on the driving speed. And the nature of the tracks often does not match the DMD2 map, at least in my area in northern Germany. But that's probably not due to DMD2 but rather the database. Tack för dina videos!

This is really valuable information and something I could have easily missed. I have also used the Locus Map a bit, not that much for navigation on motorcycle, but I really enjoy that app. Probably the best one besides the DMD2 on the market today. But the beauty with the android devices and this options is that you can choose and mix. On Garmin you are stuck with one, and in most cases horrible maps compared to what you have here. How is the brightness in sunlight on The DMD-865x Nav Tablet. And how safe are the charging contacts on the back itself regarding shaking and rain at the same time. It is known that the Tenere 700's bird stick has a tendency to shake alot without an e.g. "Camel's vibration brace"
@tshansen3 ай бұрын
The brightness in sunlight is the best one I got so far. It is even better than the xt2 but it is really hard to capture on video because of the lense on the camera and the screen. It just does not come out the way you see it when you stir at the screen. The charging contact you need to screw into the unit, so that is safe and water proof. The pin connectors in the bottom is also really safe when riding and dust and rain hit. How well it is if you ride without the tablet, or you take it off to use in the tent, and it rains and freeze I have not testet yet. But hope to do that later this season. Yes, the world raid does not fit the Camel Vibrations Brace, but I have my own design I 3D printed and works really well, but not good enough with the stick straight out towards you

I just received my T865x! Would love to hear your experience with the T865x after 3 months of use. I noticed some things that annoy me out of the box: Slow route calculation time. I wanted to navigate using DMD2 (route fast) from home to an address ~180 km away and it takes almost a minute to do this! Have you experienced this as well? Support says this is normal operation. 🤷🏻♂ The touch sensitivity (with screen protector) is noticeably lower than my smartphone. DMD support says it's normal and there's no way to boost touch sensitivity, other than removing the screen protector... Do you use a screen protector? I'm hesitant to ride without.
@tshansen13 күн бұрын
Well, I use it everyday. If not on my bike I use it in my car. Slow route calculation I have not experienced myself, but I do understand this is a highly individual thing, can you compare it with something? Calculation might be slow if you include more stuff you want to be visible near the route you have calculated, like gas stations, cabins, camping etc? The touch screen is like my smart phone in my opinion. Might have some input that miss compared to my iPhone, but still 10x better than my old Garmin. I still run with the screen protector that comes with the unit.

Thanks for showing this unit. I’d really like to see some screen shots of the unit in use while navigating. Does the map zoom in or do you see a bird’s eye view all the time and need to zoom in manually? I’ve learned today that the unit now gives spoken turn by turn directions but can it be connected via Bluetooth to a helmet? Also, one last question, can it be tethered to an iPhone to use it’s hotspot so that your can use Google maps on the DMD2? I’m seriously looking at buying one of these as I’d like to support the community rather than buy a Garmin etc but I want to learn as much as I can first. Thank you 🙏
@tshansenАй бұрын
Let me try to answer you the best I can. If not, send me an email and I try to help you with the screen shots. The map can be ticked off to zoom in when start riding, and it can also be zoomed and tilted, so you see everything more at an angle (if that make sense) It would connect to any bluetooth device like any smartphone or tablet. So yes, it will connect to a com unit on the helmet. (I have not tried this myself) Yes, you can have hotspot on your phone and share that with your unit so you have internett connection. I have an iPhone myself, and find it to be a little bit cumbersome, because you need to reconnect it sometimes (apple to android I think) So I chose to put in a simcard for data. This unit is lightyears ahead from what Garmin offers. That is just a fact. And I don't think you will be disappointed with it. There is also I incredible Facebook group with tons of informations and daily questions if you like more answers to this. Cheers

Wow. Thanks a lot for sharing. This summer I bought the new Garmin "flagship" for bikes, the "Garmin Tread". It's good, but not as great as promised. The processor is so slow, that it took the device about 15 minutes to "re-navigate" after a wrong turn. Besides that the screen of the Garmin is so slow, that I can almost paint the new map myself. I would even be willing to put up with all these shortcomings, but for me it's important, how many maps are already installed on the device or how many maps can be downloaded. For next year I will need maps of Asia and Russia. Asia is already difficult to find, and Russia is impossible to find for Garmin (at least yet, and for me). The range of maps is for me actually the first priority. So, do you think, this system is capable of storing a lot of downloaded maps in the device without going online via Wifi or data connection? Which kind of files are accepted by this device or system? I would be willing to invest in another system, if this is seriously better for navigating, even offroad, than the "Garmin Tread".
@tshansen2 ай бұрын
I don't have to much experience with the Tread unit myself, but I know it is android based, so you can install other apps like DMD2, Guru Maps, Osmand etc. so you should be able to figure something out. Looks like a great solution. My two remaining questions and points why I still look at Garmin: 1. how does the unit work when getting hot? I was just riding the Utah BDR and my phone would always go into temperature warning mode. Would this happen with this tablet/phone like solution as well? 2. how about the GPS accuracy when being in truly remote areas? With Garmin being a GPS company I still feel they have an edge over other devices in situations where there’s nothing around you. Would it be possible to send satellite emergency messages or would I still need a Garmin inreach for emergency situations? If those two things are taken care of, I won’t blink with an eye and get this solution. It is mind boggling how horrible Garmin’s SW and user experience is.
@tshansen2 ай бұрын
This is two really good questions and good points. When it comes to heat, I have no idea. I have never tested any of my units in extreme heat. We don't get much of that up here. But I know this is a system that is widely used in Australia and US, so you might want to check that out further with someone how actually got experience with it in heat. The GPS accuracy is better on this device than my XT2. I see that on tracks I have recorded with both. And how fast it find connection after tunnels etc. Inreach is a great product, but with the new price change, I think I would rather apply for a emergency beacon and use satellite messaging on the iPhone but this is also something you really need to investigate for your area and how it works in your country. I know this can variate a lot from country to country.

Thomas some questions if you can help please? I currently use a Garmin xt2 but might consider changing over. On the Garmin if i stop a route partway it will ask if i want to restart at the nearest Waypoint - which could be miles behind me. How does the DMD2 handle this? Also on Waypoints I'm forced to visit them, i can't skip them without the unit recalclating the whole route (usually changing from what i planned ). Does this work differently? Lastly when will the route planning software be released and is it phone/tablet or pc based? Thanks for any help.
@tshansenАй бұрын
Yeah, I know about the issues you are referring to. You really need to learn a good habit of how you put or plan your rutes with Garmin, even if they have a skip waypoint button on there, if you have automatic recalculation of the route you are having a hard time. Well, this exact thing I have not played around with that much on the DMD2. I almost only use trails on my map that just show the line of where I'm going. No turn by turn navigation. The route planing software is what they are working on finalizing now, so I think it should be ready soon. I use it in Beta mode and it works really well, but they have not added the automatic sync with unit yet. This is all really good questions and I really need to investigate it more to give a better and more correct answer. Or you can go into their Facebook page or official forum and ask there. your final comments are right, maybe i'm wrong, but can we use the products with any bar controllers and no more locked in their own controllers.? This prevented me to buy a captive system. And other map apps etc. The only thing I have noticed is that in some app's the zoom in and out on map is switch around with plus and minus on the controller. Not sure why this is. Yeah, subscription based stuff has become the new go to plan for investors to get their money. Everyone is suppose to earn more than the years before and with all means necessary apparently. I'm not sure how this work, but from what I can understand, if you buy a Thork product, the license comes with the unit without any subscription, but if you only want the software on any android device it is a subscription plan thing. That is understandable with the amount of work that is behind all this. I will make several follow up videos with all this, It is just to much to cover in one video alone. i like a garmin or tomtom divice for what it is you can let it fal on the ground and it stil works try that with your fone or tablet and you do to many other things with it, it distacts you of enjoying yore ride
@tshansen3 ай бұрын
Yeah, I liked Garmin for what it was for many yers as well.... but it's not true that you can drop it to the ground anymore. Maybe the old units. But as a road navigator it does a really good job and you can choose yourself how much or little you want it to distract you. Same with the tablets. Like I take away all notifications, calls, sounds, music etc. I only like navigation and the ease of using more than one app togehter with weather widget.

I've been using the first generation Carpe-ITER tablet with DMD2 for close on 4 years A game changer, and I agree, why waste your money on a bespoke Garmin product when this is the Swiss Army Knife of navigation tools?
@tshansen2 ай бұрын
Like me, I was reluctant to try it because I thought to myself I did not need all the extra stuff. Yes, it was ok to have, but never saw the need for it, but boy was I wrong. This is not only better, but it is how it should be done. Everyone else making navigation devices or app's need to use this as reference.

is it possible with this mount arm to actually get the tablet right above the TFT ? i have everything here but not the Arm (12mm) yet...
@tshansenАй бұрын
Yes, but you will probably need to support the dash so it does not vibrate as much
@argentum_on_glassАй бұрын
@@tshansen i plan to stabilize the 12mm hose with the two sided stabilizer pipes connecting to the two lower screws as Robert use to use it. But I would also like to have it leveled in front. like the surface of the two screens (TFT and nav) If it's possible with your mounting arm i go for it . if not i might let one made 3D printed... hard to tell just to see images online as have mounted it ahead the TFT

Hi, thanks for another great video, Thomas! :-) I’ve been using the DMD2 for two seasons now, and I’m really happy with it. And with the T865X, it looks like it’s going to be an even better experience. But have you figured out where the recorded GPX files are stored? I’m planning to set up automated storage of the files to Google Drive, but I’m having trouble finding out where they are saved
@tshansen3 ай бұрын
I had to do some research, ask support and by now, google drive can't access your trips recorded. But with the new ADVHub they are about to launch, there will be synchronization with the web portal for all your recorded tracks, trails, routes, waypoints etc. Same with cloud backup. So there will be a good solution for this anytime now.

@@tshansen Do you know any more spesific about the release date for the launch of the new ADVHub?

Great video! I don't understand the difference in Carpe Iter and DMD tablet.
@tshansen3 ай бұрын
Well, the difference is much easier for a tech guy to answer, but I understand that it is to separate tablets with different specs that run's the same software? With that said, I have heard a lot of stories with the Carpe Iter tablets. They don't hold charge, not waterproof etc etc.

@@tshansen thanks for the reply. I have a Garmin Zumo XT2 and I'm not happy with the interface and many other things. I've been looking at the CI and the DMD branded tablets. I have used DMD2 on my phone so I'm already a fan of the customizable screens and data fields. Thanks for the video and the response!

I am often riding where there is no cellular phone service. This is why I still happily use a Garmin 665 with Satellite radio. I have yet to find any GPS Unit which gives me Satellite Radio which I find critical for real time news and other information channels.
@tshansen2 ай бұрын
Yeah, that is a good point, I'm currently looking into the new satellite thing in iPhones, to see if that is better and less expensive than the Garmin. I see that Garmin in reach is doing something with their prices this year. But it is an important safety gadget most should consider when they go off grid.

Garmin allocates its best engineers to aviation then marine and the worst to regular gps: Watches have also distracted them.

They really need to do a ground up rewrite of their OS. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a phone-like experience. Every spring I get my Montana 700i out and pull my hair out trying to use the damn thing. Now I run my phone for nav and the Garmin comes along just for Inreach. Garmin also likes to play in the sandbox by themselves - live in our ecosystem only or f you.

Yes, you can even customise the home screen to have a separate media player control. I hate to admit it, but Garmin is just not cutting it anymore. it is way behind in both tech and software. It is ridiculous how big the difference is.
