The middle class Indians of South Africa have over the last 30 or so years have been leaving South Africa to go to Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand and Gt Britain. Many are successful in these countries as they have learnt the hard way, in South Africa, of being a minority. Their social skills seem to be in New Zealand better suited then their Indian born diaspora. The SA Indians have had to be aware of the Afrikaners, British and African tribal communities and the political power struggle between them all.

Why don't they go back to India? Why they insist on going to White Western societies instead of Asian ones (since they follow Asian culture)?

not india, indians have treated both jews and parsis with dignity and kindness and they are some of the richest communities in india, the reason for this is caste system itself, caste system prevents imposition of culture from one caste to other, so parsis and jews were caste segregated, they married within themselves, they maintained their religion and culture, such things didn't happen in abrahamic countries.

Thanks Dr Thomas Sowell for your incisive take on Indian Community in South Africa more than a century ago. You have even briefly mentioned Mahatma Gandhi's name in the passing which name unfortunately has much more behind the scene. He greatly resented Indians being treated by the White Rulers of South Africa at par with the native South Africans. He pleaded with South Africa Government to be treated at a level higher than the South Africans on the grounds that "it is to degrade the Indians to the position of the Kaffir" (Kaffir is a deregatory word similar to Nigger, which was Mahatma Gandhi's cherished word for the South Africans.) Mahatma Gandhi wrote on August 14, 1895 "The Attorney General of Natal wants to keep the Indians for ever 'hewers of wood and drawers of water' . We are classed with the natives of South Africa -- Kaffir race". He petitioned against the Government's position on housing where the Indians were grouped together wirh the native South Africans. Having failed to convince the Government that the Indians are 'superior' to native Africans he finally left Africa and returned home. The quotes are from "The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi" Vol I. There are at least fifty of these outbursts recorded in CWMG. Mahatma Gandhi hated the manner in which the South African Governments equated all colored people simply as colored people, he did not fight apatheid, he supported apatheid.

As a South African , growing up in Natal in the 60's and 70's i can attest that Sowell's description is pretty accurate. However , somewhat downplayed is the friction between Indians and Zulus. The Indians had a reputation as dishonest businessmen , taking advantage of the uneducated and naive Zulus. Zulus would trust whites before Indians. This is a large part of what led to uprisings against the Indians by the Zulus during the apartheid years. Even today , there are Indian billionaires which have accumulated wealth through dubious means. Indians do work hard and many earn their money honestly but their reputation is damaged by some that have gained wealth dishonestly.

Exactly, Gandhi was a racist who hated black Africans, but she took refuge in South Africa and asked the British to have Indians to replace black people under the pretext that they were incapable and were also brutish and violent.

The question is how do Indians treat Africans in India.I have been to India. I didn't see Kenyans or Africans owning shops. I met a sudanese who told me he was told to close his cafe by the chairman and RSS in Pune a town in India. When I went to Africa I see many Indians owning shops in kenya, south africa, tanzania, uganda etc. They are allowed to open shops and businesses. But Africans cannot be giving same opportunities So who is hating on who In truth Indians will not give economic opportunities to Africans like Africans will give to Indians. More realistic research need to be done on the ground before doing these videos . Indians worked with the British against Africansin South Africa . Please Mr Sowell , read the book, of Arunadhi Roy book on Ghandhi before doing your videos .

hey, you are true. There are rarely any shops owned by africans in India. This is beacuse we Indians have a mindset that is white people are good, black people bad. We're colonised in this race sense, even dark skinned Indian girls/boys are considered less attractive than somebody on lighter skin tone. Post independance our politians never brought unity amoung people, they always wanted divide India. Slowly things are changing. Arundhati Roy is a Hindu hating, India hating author. There were a lot of Indians in other parts of British-controlled East Africa as well, e.g. in Kenya, and what later became Uganda, again mostly in the cities. Similar to emigrants from Ireland, I suspect it was mostly grinding poverty (and intense overcrowding) in India that led most of them to try life on a different continent.
