Over the course of American history, the racial classification of Indians has been complex and ever-evolving. In the early 20th century, a series of legal battles and court rulings attempted to determine the racial status of Indian immigrants. Despite being initially excluded from whiteness, Indians strategically argued their case by invoking theories of Aryan origin and Caucasian identity. The Supreme Court's ruling in United States v. I just see people as human frankly. My daughter when she was expecting her daughter said to me that her donor's mother was Puerto Rican and did I have any prejudices about hispanics. How crazy is that? I'm Canadian. We don't know enough hispanics up here to have any prejudices toward them frankly or I think we don't. I've since discovered that my sister has some DNA associated with Spain. That was news to us. None of us is aware of any hispanic relative. Maybe, that accounts for her darker skin and my father's darker skin. We always thought we had a First Nations ancestor.

As we pull back and take a birds-eye view, here is another big takeaway, There is not a single pre-civil rights era state, federal, or supreme court case involving a plaintiff or class of plaintiffs seeking to be declared black. For any reason whatsoever, including access to immigration or citizenship. Sicily is off the coast of Africa, Meaning technically a case could have been pressed to be declared African or black in the courts, no such case exists, Egyptians and other North Africans hail from Africa so a case could have been pressed for a declaration that they qualify as black, they instead pressed a legal case to be declared white, Indians during the British empire were legally black in the empire and several regions of India received significant amounts of black African admixture during the Portuguese, British and Arab eras of occupation. The Sidi are a relatively large black African community in India that have lived there since the 15th century frankly any Indian could have claimed membership in this group as intermixing among this group is as profound as the intermixing between African Americans and white Americans, Many Indians during the British imperial period were indeed Africans having been born and raised in Africa for several generations. No court records any such assertion made by any Indian in an effort to maintain their citizenship or to gain access to citizenship. There are also no cases of any non visibly black Latin American asserting their African ancestry in the courts as a path to citizenship, even though obviously being declared black or an African was a legal possibility, no one ever purposely sought such a designation in a court of law. One has to ask, why? If whiteness was closed to you and there was a path to immigration or citizenship available through the black community why did none of these groups who could have pressed such a claim ever seek to do so? Possibly because such a legal designation would have given access to only the meager social status and opportunities available to blacks in America and open them to the legal, cultural, and social restrictions blacks in America were forced to accept as their lot in life ergo being declared black was undesirable for any reason. Better no citizenship than the 4th class citizenship enjoyed by black Americans at that time. That is another takeaway from all of this legal seeking of whiteness.

@@nytn A question worth asking is why? Why was the white power structure amenable to black African migration to the united states. Obviously, that power structure had no great love for or fidelity to Africans or people of African ancestry so to make such generous space in the legal structure for them raises questions. Possibly it was because blacks were such a tightly legally, socially, and customarily controlled group in the U. S. with very few pathways out of the labor cast and no practical pathway to structural power making them a relatively safe bet to remain in their culturally designated place. I am of course making an educated guess, however, possibly this is a question we should be asking.

I am a light skinned Afro Caribbean, and have lived among Indians for several years it almost flabbergasts me how most do not think they are Black. Yes, they are not Africans, but good goodness why is it so hard for ppl of color to just be happy with their color. Why does whiteness have to mean good and black be bad ? Gandhi also wanted Indians to be treated differently from Blacks by the British rulers in South Africa. I guess the morale of the story is that nothing good can ever come out of these imaginary identities (and unfortunately subjugated people rarely get a choice in this matter), but too much power is at stake now to just walk away from it, so they just keep complicating it and mixing it with other systems of discrimination and domination as a way of fighting these challenges to its logic. There are two indian phenotypes. The so called Aryan type is different from the Dravidian type. Aryans can be confused as white from a distance due to their facial features and paler skin...while the indigenous Dravidian type is much darker with a black skin tone, often with Africoid facial features. Because in India, a person is punished for being darker-skinned. It is built into the caste system. It is physically safer, occupationally more prudent to identify as "whiter". About a year or two ago this plumbing contractor at my job was talking to my boss. Both Long Island, NY born and raised guys. The plumber began complaining about how he had to move from his childhood hometown "finally" because it became "overrun" woth Indian families. A few thoughts: • I should've asked him what he meant by "overrun ", because more than like he was probably talking about a handful of families at the most. • While currently the name of the exact town he was talking about escapes me, *I do* remember it being a bit of a middle to upper middle class area. So this guy isn't even making a classist point, which would be bad enough. Besides the fact that he said with his own mouthpiece, "Indian families", the type of people he's talking about are PMC professionals. Doctors, teachers, engineers, execs, etc. So even without mentioning race or nationality, it's abundantly clear what the problem is with this guy. • Of course, as disgusting as this all is, I find this bit ironic, because just being from the NY area I'm very familiar with more than a few people of Indian decent who seem to want to be a part of that coveted white supremacist power structure so bad. Which oftentimes results manifests itself as anti-Blackness¹. That mentality is also prevalent in other groups of minorites including Latinos and even Black people as well. Very good point, in that why would anyone want to identify with being a white race person, other than a white race person themselves? I personally don't see anything about white that I would want to be identified, since I understand the evolution of my Black diaspora cultural history.. Also, I have observed that the racial classification of so call "CAUCASIAN" is used very UNLIMITLESS, while the so-call "NEGROID" has overwhelming restraints with LIMITATIONS. For instance, WHITE RACISTS tend to CLASSIFY people into races that suits their own benefits and throughout history has classified many NON WHITE PEOPLE who were founders of great ancient civilizations, including many BLACK PEOPLE as being the so-call "CAUCASOID" race, and has even ordered some present day BLACK EGYPTIANS to claim Caucasoid racial identity, while at the same time claiming that WHITE PEOPLE themselves are also CAUCASOID'S. I read in the Author Lerone Bennett Jr book titled Before the Mayflower that when the white population was on the DECREASE, the white controlled American government also included Black Octoroons, and even 1/2 Black/white Mulatto's as being of the WHITE RACE. However, once millions of impoverished white Europeans were allowed to immigrate to the USA and the white population increased substantially, the use for Black/white Mulattos as being classified as white was no longer needed, nor were the 88.5% white Octoroons who were reclassified back as being BLACK. The time has expired long time ago when people who are not white, should STOP allowing white racist people to CONTINUE Reclassifying them with the signing of a penned document..

From my earliest memories - I was told, "You are Chickasaw" ... as a child, my Chickasaw father told me "The whiter you are, the better you'll be treated"... and prior to his death "the older you get, the darker you look". Before Britain conquered India there were quite a few kings controlling territories each with their own structure. Even then just like other Asian cultures darker skin usually meant farmer. So nobles and the warrior class would naturally be lighter.

Yes, a light skinned group is on top of the caste system but the caste system in India was not based entirely on skin color the way it was used in the Americas. So there could be darker or lighter individuals within a caste. In some regions of the Americas, they advocated the one drop rule and in other regions, mostly Latin America, blancamiento or “mejorar la raza,” where your family could marry light skin people and move up the social ranks. That was never the case in India.

Always interested in the way the law has been used to set precedents for the ‘legality’ of the rights of human beings. I think you can definitely see how in many formerly colonised places in the world the law has prioritised citizenship for people with perceived whiteness to make their case. This to surely insist that the country becomes a white country and can be maintained as such. The alternative could have been to build countries based upon humanist at tides, that is, not binary, and fully inclusive. However that did not happen. Imagine how much effort has been ploughed into maintaining all this. And yes you are right there are countless millions of people who do not fall into a black and white world, let alone a black and white America. Those people grow with every passing year. On another note I am surprised that a Sikh gentlemen made a Hindu argument to shore up his case. But maybe that is because in the past many Sikhs would have had obvious Hindu ancestry. What a fascinating case, that shows how politics also plays its part in these matters. Also very revealing was the measly 100 person quota for Indians, there must be around that many different ethnicities! What blows my mind is even as we try to sort out the manifold and obvious problems of the past people are now inventing new scenarios that are even worse, and which potentially could be more divisive, not less. A very great video that i think you did very good research and narration to. This topic is very important to be covered to the American definition of who is whom and what privileged and economic mobility is to be considered and reserved to. With the choice of being a person of color and being associated to a societal designated permanent underclass in the United States, many will choice to be included in the "White" advantage and economic privileged classification hierarchy, as a goal that most immigrants wanted to be included and associated with. Most immigrants when they come here...Can and usually do shed their names and even family culture to fit in....As this too...is associated to being an 'American" to fully integrate into. The meanings and definition of what is to be named and designed "White/Caucasian", is from the government and not from a anthropological biological view, as they are looking for the "Right" kind of "White" and never to include others that many have a claim to this designation. Hence, Indians, some Eastern Europeans from other nations and Central Asia and especially those from the Subcontinent [Indians] are excluded, not matter their "Aryan" claim, as it is actually granted to those of German and Iranian descent...Believe of not. Government and institutions are the ones that can and do...Grant certain exemptions and privileges as well as economic upward mobility to. Hence to the confusion to even those immigrants within, and certain people that are granted United States citizenship and those that are 3rd and 4th level in this country. Appearance and old world status and designation are not everything here and may not and would be considered in their cases. The United States is about appearance to the Caucasian classification of "Whiteness", not theirs and hence this why even the founding Fathers of the United States mentioned those that come from "Fine British Stock" were the first to achieve high level hierarchy here, and other that fit would be classified according to where they came from in Europe and to provide a layer of hierarchy to those from and of African Descent. Well Caucasian as far as I know has always referred to people of the Caucasus along the Black and Caspian Sea. I've heard of Ethiopians being linked to Caucasian, yet they are not white, they are Cushites. I feel now it has been a political agenda all along to promote "white" as a system that would later be used to cause more friction in U.S. society; a system to divide. In the U.S. several European groups weren't allowed under the white umbrella. To this day, what I've noticed and I'm glad to hear it, that many of the people of Europe don't comply to the United States whites code. So really, I think we agree on just about all of this. No modern people today are exactly as our ancient ancestors. Indo-Europeans wouldn't be exactly the same either. I have a lot of love and respect for Ethiopian culture. I am more focus though in this discussion on the Caucasus. In research many of us who have any European ancestry can trace our roots back to the Caucasus. One may not be as knowledgeable about one particular world region of people group as others but that doesn't indicate that they are unknowledeable overall about human anthropology. What's beautiful about us humans, God's Creation is we never stopped being kin, related; that's evident in anthropology. Shalom

Look up Gandhi's history on what he thought about Black people. Also, Hindu nationalism, like most other forms of nationalism (most, not all), *can be* highly problematic.

It's _because_ they are a proud people that they were fighting to be "white". _'white'_ means ACCESS to resources. Black (or brown) means EXCLUSION.
