Hello Everyone,
+This is Part 1 of a start-to-finish watercolor painting demonstration recorded in real-time. In this video, I cover intention, composition, values, and color - as well as interpretation, design, formatting, drawing, sketching, and perspective, etc.
+The scene depicts a small Asian-inspired bridge at a Japanese Garden in Ohio very near where I grew up. I've re-interpreted the reference in my attempt to paint a personal emotional experience rather than just a scene.
Thanks for watching!
Tom
+This painting was done on Arches Watercolor Paper - rough surface - 300gsm :
+15x12 inches
+Pigments by Daniel Smith
+Brushes by Escoda and Neef
+Palette by House of Hoffman
+Sketch pencils by Blackwing and Faber-Castell
+Sketchbook by Stillman + Birn

Thank you for sharing both your teaching and also your thoughts with us! Building a bridge between any two things can seem so complicated, difficult to design and build, and often hard to finance.....daunting in prospect but so worth the effort when you consider the wonders of what might come across...

So happy to find you….I live in Ohio now but I’m from Big Sur, California which has a fabulous coastline for many artists! Ohio has much beauty and you have inspired me to start painting from my photos of Amish Country. I LOVE your paintings and teaching❤❤❤

Thank you so much! I'm from Ohio - live in NYC now, but lived for years in California - in LA. But Northern California is spectacular - I miss it

Thank you for your commentary. I was especially moved by your thoughts on not being tied to just painting the same subject matter every time because it is easy or in your "wheel house". I have been struggling with where to go with my art journey. Your comments have given me encouragement as well as thoughts on how to proceed.

That's great to hear. If you begin to develop a consistent point of view - no subject matter - real or imaginary - will seem "out of bounds"

@@thomaswschaller I never would have thought about creating a painting from a consistent POV. Thanks again!

Wait…vids from you two days in a row?! It must be very hot indeed in NYC. Thank you, Thomas. You’ve encouraged me to try some very different things - rough paper (why did I never try this before?) and greens - both jadite & serpentine (brilliant!). Such an influence you are!

I truly think nostalgia can and is a real part of an artists experience ….many times transferred to paper when least expected.

Well, my opinion is that nostalgia - on its own - can be OK but can also sometimes be cloying and retrograde. When thought of as an element of memory, nostalgia can have an element of forward-looking hopefulness as well
