Thompson Bros SRV5 review

We're seeing a lot of younger and younger folk playing there part in the whisky world these days. This is fantastic because, the next generation have to keep it coming. And that's exactly what Phil and Simon Thompson are doing at Dornoch. And not only are they keeping it alive but, they're being innovative and keeping things fresh.
Fair play to them I say. The more "Thompson Bros." in this world...the better.

Single Malt: Whisk(e)y made by one distillery using malted barley.
Single Grain: Whisk(e)y made by one distillery using one or a selection of grains (usually corn, wheat, rye, etc.). Also used to describe whiskies made in column stills.
Blended Malt: Whisk(e)y made by blending single malts from more than one distillery.
Blended Grain: Whisk(e)y made by blending single grains from more than one distillery.
Blended Scotch or Blend (any other country): Whisky made by blending single malt and single grain (whiskies) from one or more distilleries.
Chill Filtered: A process performed by some producers which sees the whisk(e)y chilled to around 0°to10°, before being screen filtered to remove oily residue left over from the maturation.
N.A.S. Non age stated whisky. No age on bottle.
U.S. Proof: Proof is 2 x ABV. Example…100 Proof = 50% ABV.
Imperial/British Proof: ABV is 4/7 of Proof. Example…100 Proof = 57.1% ABV.

Great review Jim. After hearing Roy's opinion about this one, I decided to buy it without trying. Never regretted it. Love this blended malt. Great quality for only 45 € in my country. I have to look for a new one, cause mine's almost empty.

Excellent review Jim - I love the complexity and weight of the SRV5 😃👍; a notable blend that bears comparison with Clynelish......no mean feat that!

Good review Jim. I think this is a great whisky especially for the value proposition. Probably the most replaced bottle on my shelf since it was released. Interesting that you didn't mention picking up any smoke on it. I have found it to be more prominent in the later batches I've had so maybe you have an earlier bottling?

Most, if not all distilleries won't sell to whiskymakers without some kind of nondisclosure agreement. Acetone is a BIG put off for me brother! As for Solera systems: I just bought a Solera Aged Bourbon from Hillrock, a farm to bottle operation in upstate New York.

Jim what a fabulous review! I am in Vancouver and I will see if I can find the Thompson Brothers SRV5!! Sometimes I have to order internationally or from a great store I found in Alberta - great prices and talk about a huge stock of outstanding single malts and blends! I'm in Vancouver and maybe I just haven't found the right store yet but so far I am disappointed in what I can't find locally. Love the high quality and staying away from chill filtering and color. No need for that at all. This is a good ABV! Comprehensive reviews, fun, I learn a lot and I think it's awesome that you are going to review whatever is interesting you at any given time!! Do whatever is fun and enjoyable! I think that's wonderful! The Solera system is really interesting! I am so enjoying your reviews! Huge thanks! Cheers! P.S. I'm glad you got a bit of down time! Soooo many whiskies Frank. I have just recently started a "must buy" list again and, almost instantly, I was buying other stuff tgat wasn't on that list. Self control isn't really a strong point with most whisky enthusiasts I've learned lol. Slàinte my friend. Thanks for waiting for me 😉

I hope the break was refreshing, Jim. Welcome back and I hope that wing has healed up and most of the pain is gone. I keep hearing about Thompson Bros. but so far as I can find my only access is to buy it online in the UK and pay to ship it over-- a bit too expensive. I really like the quality and value they are providing and would love to be able to buy their stuff. I do love Clynelish and it seems logical they are sourcing from them. In the mean time I'll keep buying Clynelish... although I have almost stopped buying Diageo. I like the idea of lookng for indy bottlings. Slainte, pal.

UPDATE ... SRV5 Arrived , drunk ( not all of it !) ..Enjoyed , very nice indeed and as you correctly intimate ...A similar tipple to Clynelish 14 ...Good call sir !

Jim I remember you discussing Compass box Orchard harvest and saying a chunk of that was made from Clynelish and I think Glen Elgin ( could be wrong ) and you suggested playing around mixing more Clynelish and seeing what happens ( although you did say , you couldn’t be bothered 🤣) so I did and wow very good . Anyway .forward fast let’s mix Com Box Or Harv and STV 5 and Clynelish 14 not a massive saving financially but lots of interesting fun to be had and when ya get the right mix of the 3 IMO the end result is better than any of them individually . Just makes life interesting 👍
