As someone who is new to Red and just ordered the black Komodo X camera this video is so very helpful. One question I have if if I want to move the monitor to a top handle, how does that happen? Does the plate that says " Attach Trigger" stay there and the monitor bracket comes off of that, allowing it to move elsewhere? Assuming you have a long enough cable that is?
@ThomsonVisuals
@ThomsonVisuals Жыл бұрын
Hey Justin, yeah it's exactly how you think! The RMI piece that says "Attach Trigger" stays screwed into the camera. That houses the Red Monitor Interface circuit board and RMI port. The small RMI cable gets replaced with a longer one, and then you mount the monitor on a top handle, probably with RED or Wooden Camera accessories, since they're always the first accessories on the market for a new RED camera. DM me @thomsonvisuals on Instagram, i'll send you a 12G SDI StormCable for your new Komodo-X!

The camera seems amazing. However I'm kinda picky about the monitor due to the history of RED haha. Do you think it's possible to develop an adapter to place there other type of monitors to at least visualize the scene? I know it has an SDI port, but just asking anyways. Thanks for the video!

Good question. Thankfully, time has proven this monitor to be reliable. One module that I really hope RED considers is a way to repurpose the RMI interface on the top of the camera. They could make it another SDI port, or an HDMI port. That way you have multiple monitoring output options without having to drop the big money for the 7" touchscreen. With that said, their newest 7" screen is a good evolution of their DSMC1 and DSMC2 monitors. The RMI cable means that you can mount the monitor wherever you like without a 15 pin LEMO cable, which was more expensive, and more prone to failure. The 15mm tilt/swivel mount means less hinges broken in the field. And the monitor is quite bright, though I always want more nits. You may like the EVF coming out later this year!

@@ThomsonVisuals thank you for the answer!! :)) that repurpose module could be something really nice to have. The main reason why I don't want to buy that expensive monitor is because (in my opinion) it's too overpriced. For way less I can get a 7" touchscreen from Blackmagic that I believe it records ProRes (backup files). But hoping that they launch something similar to what you mentioned here haha. Again thanks for the answer!!

Live sports events without internal ND gonna be tough. Live events rocks a lot of EF and E Glass in Paris / France not all PL.

Very good point. I do broadcast shading every now and then and remote control ND is something I’ve taken for granted. Wouldn’t be a problem for studio/esports but for football/motorsports/anything outdoor, yeah, an eND RF to EF would be great.

@@ThomsonVisuals Yeah same, as far as multicam I do brand content with like 5 or 7 Sony, and motorsport is beauty shot and slowmo. Thermal management and internal ND are crucials.

My last day job, we had 11 FX6s. We wanted to do Komodo but for the same price, the Sony is so feature rich for not THAT much of an IQ difference. And for studio setups, the bigger FX6 body isn’t a con. It’s actually kinda a benefit. Thermal management is handled. I took apart my Komodo ST, put it back together with like 1/8th the thermal compound it needed, and it runs hot but never overheats, even in 35°C weather. They did both things - built a ton of thermal capacity in there, but also made great strides in lowering the power consumption, and therefore heat generated, in the first place. Really impressed with all of RED’s latest generation of cameras in that regard.

@@ThomsonVisuals Yeah I rented komodo and Raptor only on a few jobs without issues while DSMC2 Dragon and Helium were nightmares in regards to thermals ! But yeah, I really really wish RED could understand that a camera is more than sensor and a small camera size + tons of accessories for everything else. If they can do a camera with the same features as a Sony FX6 (internal nd, XLR inputs, and hey let say it : AF) with RED IQ they will be unstoppable.

RED should come out with a 5" touchscreen. The 7" looks ridiculous on the Komodo.

Yup. Next time I’ll use an iPhone for the B cam because it was a pain to keep focusing the Scarlet to account for the different sizes of accessories. Actually, an iPhone in cinematic mode on a little Gobi tripod would’ve cut nicely and 89% of viewers probably wouldn’t have noticed. Especially if I put the Scarlet in front of the iPhone rig 😂
