I laughed so hard again while editing that moment. Easily my favourite joke in the entire movie. The way that Thor just says it so dead seriously because that's how he is raised is what makes it hilarious.

A note about the nametag on the t-shirt when Jane said "My ex"... Donald Blake was the name of Thor's human alter ego in the 1960s comics. So it was a nice touch having Thor run around in those clothes (and Selvig using that name to get him freed from SHIELD custody) while he was banished to Earth.

Yeah, I just said the same thing right before I saw you beat me to it, lol. It is a cool little deep-cut Easter egg. His alter ego was actually a frail, crippled human who was quite vulnerable and had to use a cane to get around. Of course the cane was really his hammer in disguise, and he'd have to tap it on the ground a certain way to change into Thor.

About Odinson being Thor’s name because he’s Odin’s son, that’s actually the origin of many surnames. Any name that ends with “son” or “sen” means “son of”, in Spanish it is surnames like mine that end in “ez” like Hernández means “son of Hernando”; Fernández, Benitez and so on; in Dutch names preceded by “Van” or “Von” which means “(coming) from” or any surname preceded by “Bar” which is the Arabic version of the Hebrew “Ben” which means “son of”.

First Thor is definitely one of my favorite MCU movies of all time. All these years later Asgard still looks every bit as great as it did in 2011 and the whole movie has that unique charm to it. Seeing Hannibal Lecter as Odin for the first time was great. Anthony Hopkins did a fantastic job portraying this ancient and wise king and loving father figure. Stellan Skarsgard is a fantastic actor and elevates any movie he's playing in. Idris Elba as Heimdall was a fantastic pick, if a little bit on the nose as in Norse mythology Heimdall is described as "the whitest skinned of the gods", but in Thor he is literally the only black actor 😂 Now all that's left before the Avengers is Captain America- another one of my MCU favorites! Steve Rogers is a Paragon character done right. He has the backbone of high carbon steel and you can't help but root for him the whole movie.

Excellent reaction and review!!! This was the first MCU movie that I saw in theaters and I loved it! As a kid in the 80’s and a teen in the 90’s, I grew up on cheesy swords and sorcerers fantasy films and television. The love for the fantasy genre carried on into adulthood for me. I am refreshed to hear that you appreciated Jane & Thor’s awkward and adorable relationship, not everyone in the fandom shares this opinion. I am always surprised when I hear people say that they have no chemistry as a couple, when all I see is chemistry 🤷‍♀️ As for Loki, “there are moments when I didn’t like him, but when I sit here and think about it…” Yep, that’s Loki. You have finally met my favorite MCU character!!! I will spoil things if I go to far into why Loki is my favorite, but you seem to see Loki’s intrigue as a character already. Hiddleston does a fantastic job of showing the many layers that make up Loki. I love in the final fight between the brothers, how Loki has tears in his eyes and eventually streaming down his face, when trying to goad Thor into fighting him. His scene with Hopkins in the vault is an amazing display of vulnerability and pain. You just want to hug him and tell him he is loved and worthy. I am so happy to have found your channel, you are a joy to watch and your insight is pretty spot on. Good stuff!!!

Loki is an interesting and complex character, much of his backstory is taken directly from Norse mythology, tales that are a little over a thousand years old. His speech to Odin in the treasure vault when he discovers his true identity is so powerful! It is vicious but also true. His whole life has him set up to fail. Then during his fight with Thor at the end when he threatens to "pay her (Jane) a visit" is... dark. One of the most truly evil lines in the MCU so far.

Loki is the God of mischief, which makes him an anti-hero. He sometimes does good but he's always got a selfish reason for it that he may or may not make known. Like his elaborate plot to kill the frost king after letting him in so he would look good to Odin and Frigga.

As a nerd who started playing Dungeons and Dragons in 1980, I was familiar with Norse mythology before the MCU so Thor was especially fun for me to watch because I recognized the characters as they were introduced and appreciated little details like the quick shot of Sleipnir, Odin's eight-legged horse, when he intervened in Jotunheim. Even though I had read some of the comics in the 70s it was the mythology that made me familiar with everyone other than Thor and Loki. Glad you're enjoying the MCU so far, keep up the good work.

Although there are differences between Norse myths and the Marvel take. For instance, in the Norse mythology Loki is Odin's blood brother, Thor and lady Sif are married, Thor is a ginger and not the brightest of the gods, and so on. And the story of how Odin got Sleipnir is hilarious! XD (Little spoiler for those who doesn't know Norse mythology: Loki is Sleipnir's mother. Yes, mother. Go read about that, you won't regret. 😄)

I think your overall take is very much in line with the general consensus about Thor. Not the MCU's best movie, but certainly not bad. The injection of some myth and fantasy into the MCU is really fun. Chris Hemsworth really took ownership of the character after this and was instrumental in fleshing him out much more than this movie did. (Which, again, was not bad by any means, just more of a, I dunno, "stereotypical" arrogant hero arc.) Really enjoyed your reaction! (As I have with all of your Star Wars reactions as well)

It is really interesting to see the different characters all coming into view. One of the things that is nice is that none of them are really... copies of one another, truly. But yeah, with Kenneth Brannagh directing it, it makes sense that this one felt quite so Shakespearean. He is, after all, very involved with that kind of work. His Much Ado About Nothing would be one worth watching.

The Marvel Asgardians are based on real Norse mythology, implying that the myths are real due to Asgardians protecting Earth and being seen as gods by the Vikings. In the actual, real-world lore, Loki, the god of Mischief, is Thor's uncle, and Sif is Thor's wife, who has blonde hair. Loki shaves her bald as a prank, and Thor was so enraged that he threatened to beat Loki to a pulp. Loki swore he would make it right and had the Dvergr (dwarves) craft her a wig of spun gold, and also gifted Thor with 3 powerful artifacts so as to escape his ire: Megingjordr, the belt of giant strength; Jarngreipr, the steel gauntlets of might; and Mjolnir the Mullicrusher, a hammer of great power that would return to Thor's hand when thrown (he needed the gauntlets to be able to do so). The hammer was flawed, however; a mistake during it's forging saw the handle get shortened significantly so it couldn't be wielded with both hands, lessening its strength. Thor is boisterous, boastful, and has a great love of killing giants. He is called the Thunder God because the Vikings thought that thunderclaps during storms were the sound of Mjolnir striking Thor's enemies, protecting the people of Midgard (Earth). They also believed that rainbows were a bridge to the realm of the gods; the Bifrost, the Rainbow Bridge that is guarded by the all-seeing Heimdallr, keeper of the Gjallarhorn which will be blown to signal the coming of Ragnarok, the end of the world. My favorite myth is that of the Valkyrie Bride, where Mjolnir was stolen by the Jotun king Thrymr, in order to extort the Aesir (the gods) into giving him Freya, Queen of the Valkyries, as his bride. Loki came up with a plan to dress Thor up in a wedding dress and veil, and pretend to be Freya so they could get into the giant stronghold and take back the hammer, and it worked :D There's a Thor skin in the game Smite dedicated to this myth and it's amazing :)

Norse Mythology is what was used to base the story and character of Thor in marvel, and Tolkien when writing the Lord of the Rings was heavily inspired by Norse Mythology. This isn’t in the MCU, but there is a King Gandalf in Snorri’s History of the Danes. There’s a lot of characters that are in the Tolkien verse that have names similar if not the same. It was fun to see Thor kind of learn some humility and grow in wisdom. Loki is played wonderfully by Tom Hiddleston. Just know that Loki, in the old mythology, as well as in Marvel is a Trickster. He is the god of mischief, and he double crosses his triple crossed plans regularly. 😅 Also, no spoilers, the blue cube they showed in the post credit scene is what the Frost Giants used to come to Earth in Tsonsberg Norway 1000 years ago. You will learn a bit more about it as you progress in the MCU, which I am really looking forward to. Thanks for your videos. Have a great day.

This movie seems to have a mixed-negative reception among MCU fans, but for a long time it was one of my top 3 and I think it's still in my top 10. Director Kenneth Branagh's background making Shakespeare adaptations, to me, wisely allows the classically-trained Hopkins and Hiddleston, as well as Hemsworth, who is also good, to Act with a capital A ("But you're NOT king!" and "You are a vain, cruel boy!" are such delightfully over-the-top line readings), without making the film self-serious, finding exactly the right kind of arch dramatic note. I also, as a rom-com fan, LOVE the relationship between Jane and Thor, which from my estimation seems to be nearly universally hated by everyone else who has seen these movies. It helps that Hemsworth also has great comic chops (he's very funny in another unpopular movie I really like, the 2016 Ghostbusters remake), and, well, I have to admit I just have had a crush on Natalie Portman since I was a 15-year-old seeing The Phantom Menace back in 1999. I also think Darcy and Dr. Selvig are fun characters. My only complaint -- which they thankfully realized they do not need to do going forward (this is not a spoiler) -- is the way they dyed Hemsworth's eyebrows blonde. Also in the "no spoilers" category, without divulging any specifics, Loki is a character I think other people liked more than I did for a long time. Hiddleston is good, but the actual character didn't seem especially rich. The "Loki" show turned that all around for me -- it's actually my second-favorite entry in the entire MCU. Obviously, it's quite a ways off, but I am already looking forward to whenever that happens, and hopefully you get the same boost of appreciation starting from a higher level of existing enjoyment. Also, because I can't leave a comment without connecting a dot between today's reaction and an obscure movie that would do terribly on the channel, Stellan Skarsgard ("Dr. Selvig") is incredible in the 1997 Norwegian thriller Insomnia. You may have heard the title, as director Christopher Nolan remade it in 2002 with Al Pacino in the Skarsgard role, a project that led to him taking on the Batman movies.

Not sure if this was mentioned below or not since this was a year ago, but in your review you mentioned it was not good that Odin stole Loki from the frost giants. However, you have to remember they had cast him out onto the rocks to die since he was so small and frail compared to all the other frost giants. So technically Odin saved his life when he was an infant.

7:10 That's how a lot of common last names came to be. Peterson, son of Peter; Johnson, son of John; Williamson, son of William; Robertson, son of Robert; Davidson, son of David; Donaldson, son of Donald; etc. At some points in time, people in certain regions had only first names, like John. To distinguish between multiple people named John, they would refer to them as the son of their father. John, whose father was Peter, was John, son of Peter. John, whose father are Robert, was John, son of Robert. Customs changed and eventually they started using last names, which would be John Peterson and John Robertson.

ALL of the story strands worked well & tied up at the end I thought The premise of this version of Norse mythology, is that , these beings existed, on another uncharted planet, instead of being in some...Scandivavian heaven, which works well, Azgard is beautifully envisioned here, & believable as a hybrid city both traditional & futuristic looking, there was the reminder of films like- FLASH GORDON , at times, but that couldnt be avoided, the...wardrobe/costumes were dignified enough I never thought they looked silly, & finally the dialogue was well written, they spoke in...SUPERMAN Krypton type fine wise language which also suited this type of film.

THANK YOU for recognizing and seeing what has always bothered me about Odin and the backstory with Loki - he DID STEAL Loki. I have always viewed it as a "political hostage" type of situation, where he was hoping to somehow use Loki as leverage against Laufey. Loki is my favorite MCU character, period, and he breaks my heart in this movie. All he wanted was to be accepted and loved by his father/family, even after he learned the truth. He wanted to be a hero to Odin, and he wanted to destroy EVERY TRACE of who he was as a frost giant - to erase the "monster" part of himself. It breaks me, every time.

@jala1551 Жыл бұрын
@@lilblock3564 Maybe they did. We don't really know since all we have is Odin's retelling of the story - and he canonically hides things and lies about things regarding his family. (See: Ragnarok). You don't have to agree, my friend. But there's fairly solid canon basis for Odin being a LESS than stellar parent. As well as for the lies on which his family is built. Ragnarok is really where a lot of the negative impressions of Odin come from, where it's fairly clear that the story Thor and Loki were told their whole lives about their family is false at least in portions.

Brilliant. As always. Do you have edited Andor reactions available on your Patreon service? I don't have the necessary equipment/set up to do the watchalongs (is that even a word?) so I'm limited to reactors that show the full movie/episode or edited reactions on KZbin but I'd love to see your Andor reactions and I have no qualms about paying for them...
@kaiielle
@kaiielle Жыл бұрын
Andor reactions are not edited, just the full-length watchalongs with the full thought/review dump at the end. Copyright law dictates that I cannot re-distribute the full movie/episode in my reactions, so what you get on my Patreon are the watchalongs. I leave the first 30-60 seconds of it up for syncing purposes and after that point the movie/episode is blurred and the audio is removed completely so you're left with my reaction. Reactors who show the full movie/episode in their full-length reactions are taking a risk by doing so. It's not one that I am willing to take, nor am I able to as I use KZbin to host all of my Patreon reactions. I personally use Picture-in-Picture mode to watch full-length reactions with because I can put my copy of the movie/show overtop of the reaction video that I'm watching and it's all on one screen.
@damaradona
@damaradona Жыл бұрын
@@kaiielle Thank you. I didn't think there would be edited versions, nor would I expect you to take unnecessary risks. 99% of all reactors use the same watchalong format. @kaiielle
@kaiielle Жыл бұрын
@@damaradona It's possible that one day in the future when I have editing help, I could end up putting some of the exclusive series on my channel in edited format, but that's just not something I can afford yet, so the watchalong format is my way of being able to react to more things that people ask for. And my review videos are the compromise to involve people who can't afford Patreon!

People like to dunk on this movie occasionally because of the conflicting tone issues, but if this movie did anything right, it's casting (as does most of the Marvel catalogue). Chris Hemsworth? Perfect. Tom Hiddleston? Could not be more perfect. Idris Elba, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, etc. etc.... Who knows how much the later movies might have suffered without the stellar cast that we did get.

my comments on reaction videos for marvel focus on the comics vs the movie. they did a great retcon from the comics where a human becomes thor, by giving him a fake name to get him out of the hospital. in comics, Donald Blake was the lame doctor who finds a cane in a cave in scandinavia, taps it on the ground, and becomes the shakespearean thor. its a horrible gimmick, which they downplayed later. they definitely kocked it out of the park with the majestic Asgard and the rainbow bridge. and chris hemsworth did a find job in this movie of capturing that bombastic style. he IS thor now, forever more. but the real star is Loki. i mean, talk about an anti hero. hes perfect, tom hiddleston is such a gem. Loki in Asgard is looking down on him and smiling a big shit eating grin.

"Odinson" is not his family name. The concept of family name is a fairly modern invention. The son of Frank, in old times woukd be known with the last name of Frankson in many cultures. In some cultures the last name given would be the profession of that person, so if Frank were a baker, he would be called "Frank Baker" while if Frank were a builder of stone structures, he might be called "Frank Mason" So, it is zero surprise, and not even coincidence, Thor would be called Thor Odinson. I'm pretty sure Odin was about to proclaim Thor "heir" to the throne, not proclaim him king. Very rarely throughout history, has a monarch declared their heir to be monarch. Rather, they officially declare "this is the chosen to take the role, when my time comes." The family name error you made is clarified by Thor referring to Phil Coulsen "cole son" as "son of Cole"
